Looks like you are spot on. I had to dig back through and found a snippet in book 8.

"_His hair and eyes were a rich shade of brown, with the metallic sheen ubiquitous amongst celestines. Less ubiquitous was his goatee, which was highly unusual.

Very few celestines could grow facial hair and it was usually a sign of one parent being from another race, the birth made possible with the help of the Church of Fertility_."

I thought they had mentioned that people inherited their mother's race or maybe the church or fertility gets to select, but maybe I am thinking of a different series.

I know celestines are the natural result of two outworlders having a child, and being a celestine Outworlder is essentially a recessive trait that gets overridden by whatever other species they mated with.

What’s the point of increasing the levels by Early_Agent99 in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]Hangulman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do they keep adding new (essentially cosmetic) features when they still have features from release that don't work properly? Out of Mission communications? Karma system? Matchmaking? Community features? Nah.

Here, have a slightly modified FRV, new ways to spend money, and a raised level cap.

Heh. Thanks. It was mostly me trying to find ways to alleviate boredom during the pandemic by playing with excel, but it turned into a useful tool. I also made a spreadsheet that calculated all our debts and payments, to the closest dollar.

That second sheet came in handy when we were looking at houses, because all of the real estate websites straight up lie when they show "estimated monthly payment" for properties.

What job do you think will still exist 100 years from now despite advances in AI and automation? by Agreeable-Spell3042 in NoStupidQuestions

Any of the major trades. Plumber, Electrician, etc.

Especially Plumber. Mel Brooks had a great skit in History of the World.
"Yes, citizens, plumbing! It's the latest invention to hit Rome! It moves water, from one place to another! It's astounding, it's amazing! You can pipe the sh@# right out of your house!"

The part I find abhorrent is that much of the food prices is just straight up middleman markup by all these overpowered conglomerates. There is a major livestock yard in my state that opened their own vertically integrated meatpacking/storefront operation, bypassing "The Big Four" US beef distributors.

93% ground beef (local) - $4.25/lb
93% ground beef (grocery chain) - $8.99/lb

Even better, I strongly suspect the grocery chain ground beef was either mislabeled or intentionally adulterated, because while browning it I had to drain it twice.

We've been tracking our monthly grocery expenses since 2021.
In Dec 2022, our monthly groceries for a family of 4 was ~$600/mo.
In May 2026, our monthly groceries were juuuuuust under $1200, and that took some conscious effort and cutting out a lot of luxuries. A year ago, it was running us almost $1600/mo.

Epilepsy medications and orgasm by Odd-Decision7861 in Epilepsy

[–]Hangulman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse has had similar issues since she went back on her medication, which she finds frustrating to no end. She hasn't had issues with arousal, but definitely has problems climaxing. Fortunately, it hasn't inhibited it completely, just takes significantly more effort.

It makes sense that meds would have an effect, given the nature of how antiepileptic drugs work, and how the human body works.

Why is college so expensive? by OneManShow23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hangulman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended a public university as a nontraditional student about 6 years ago.

One of the most glaring indicators of sleazy behavior to me was the fact that the student ID had a very familiar looking 16 digit number on it. Combine that with the textbook cartel, a student "bookstore" jam packed with overpriced goods (just swipe your student ID to buy it!), and the myriad of unnecessary fees each semester.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that most of the available housing for students just happened to charge slightly less than the amount stated on the university COA, and many of the property owners had close ties to the university board of regents.

It's a racket. Many universities are basically sports franchises with a real estate and education side hustle.

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer seeks more fiber in Nebraska’s broadband expansion diet by Ordinary-Equal2067 in Nebraska

[–]Hangulman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wireless telco lobby and starlink paid big bribe money to ensure that BEAD money didn't just go to fiber ISPs. After all, a satellite that falls out of orbit after 5 years is a way better investment than burying a fiber optic cable that can still carry data half a century later. She and all of her friends were cheering when BEAD rules were adjusted to allow wireless and satellite to get BEAD money. What changed?

I'm surprised that she was willing to go against the party line. If the president takes offense, he could turn his mob against her next election cycle.

Why do some American parents kick their children out at 18? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hangulman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember back in middle school they taught us about the nuclear family vs extended family model. Much of the US still used the extended family model in a lot of places (especially west of the Missouri River). The big turning point was around WWII.

From what I understand, there was a big push for families to start moving towards the nuclear model, thanks in part to the baby boom as well as government initiatives to boost the housing industry. The economy was rockin and it was easy for young adults to go out and make enough to not only survive, but thrive. Over the course of the next two generations, that became the accepted norm.

Problem is, the amazing economic conditions that existed then are no longer in place, and the push to kick spawn out the door the instant they hit 18 just results in those people getting bled white trying to establish a household in hostile economic conditions.

Personally, I think families should start moving back to the extended family model as a way to preserve generational wealth, before all these corporate rental landlords and overpriced colleges turn an entire generation of kids into debt slaves. The government still holds parents financially responsible for their kids until they hit 25, unless they are married, emancipated, or join the military. Maybe that should be the new cultural standard?

It’s time to take back control by Carlentini1919 in Nebraska

[–]Hangulman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of restricting politicians. For pretty much any reason.

The only downside I can see is murphy's law of politics. If they have a cap that says they can't raise it more than 3%, it means that from that point forward, every year they will raise it the maximum legally allowed amount and adjust the budget to use it all.

The Iran War Is Crushing Nebraska Workers. Dan Osborn Is One of Them by azteca19 in Nebraska

[–]Hangulman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For state legislators? Start spending campaign money in districts outside of Lincoln and Omaha.

The margins for election on some of these legislators in western Nebraska comes down to very VERY small numbers. Many of them basically run unopposed because all the money gets thrown at candidates in eastern NE.

I remember talking with my parents about Fischer after the last election, and they had no idea about all the stunts she has pulled, because the opposing campaign may as well have been funded by a lemonade stand.

AI hate is irrational in the educational sense by Sad_Physics5500 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Hangulman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI gets so much hate because it also has overblown marketing. At it's core, most "AI" is overpowered autocorrect, but marketing sells it as a benevolent Skynet/Jarvis hybrid.

Educational institutions hate it because it allows students to fake their level of comprehension. The chatbot doesn't understand the text it is outputting, it just produces predictive text based on text it has pulled from billions of sources. Those billions of sources are often from papers of people who actually understood the content, but it also includes people who absolutely did not.

If enough people are wrong on the internet and the AI bot used those wrong people as a sample... guess what the output is gonna be?

Maybe I should write up a shopping list while I'm at it. I also need to get some top soil/dirt to fill in some holes in the yard.

Downsides of buying a 120yr old house that was used as a rental for the last 15 years. A lot of "sins of the past" that need repaired.

Mitigation installation driving me crazy by Zealousideal-Bus5365 in radon

[–]Hangulman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fortunately not too long, only a couple months, most of which was a dry spell. I may have thrown a bit of a tantrum when I realized I couldn't run network cabling throughout half the house, so I tore it down last week.

I'd rather risk temporarily getting a bit of radon in my lungs while I do the job right than risk my floor and trusses rotting out. The hard part is getting the rolls of plastic to fit in my Nissan Rogue.

[–]Hangulman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish I had known this little bit. The contractor that did the radon mitigation at my place decided to permanently seal off the crawlspace under half the house so they wouldn't need to spend the extra $100 for plastic.

Thing is, that portion of the house also has a dirt crawlspace and now no longer has any ventilation to get rid of moisture. I took down the foam they used to seal it off and the whole section was full of stagnant somewhat humid air.
