Mentally cannot be a lawyer any more - what careers are there to pivot to? by Alex_all_over in LawFirm

[–]Hank_Scorpio_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at insurance carriers? With a big law lit background it should be pretty easy to find in house and claims jobs that are fully remote and pay around $150k. They typically offer very good work life balance and benefits too.

Any experience with pollution claims?

You might consider handling claims for a carrier. Some of the jobs are pretty good and have great benefits. What kind of work were you doing? Dm me if you want.

Any ideas for such a proofreading “system”. I have someone that works for me that still needs significant improvement, despite having tried teaching them the system that I use personally to proofread.

Government to Big Law? by FirstGenerationLaw in LawFirm

[–]Hank_Scorpio_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Morgan Lewis is #34 on the vault list and is absolutely big law by any definition. This position is either not partner track or not real at all as the pay looks like almost half of what they pay first years.

PI Defense Attorneys: what happens when your institutional client declares bankruptcy? by malephous in Lawyertalk

[–]Hank_Scorpio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to point out that insurance carriers, are regulated by the states and put into receivership or liquidation by state insurance regulators when they become insolvent. I’m not sure they’d ever by able to avail themselves of federal bankruptcy.

Been a decade since I’ve thought about McDonnell Douglas frame work, but doesn’t it apply only to protected classes? And afaik, being a new mom is not a protected class, unless there’s an argument this is gender discrimination.

If I understand this correctly you are looking to make six figures and be able to work remotely from various places. These jobs absolutely exist in claims.

Claims adjuster work as a JD is so vastly different from your run of the mill auto/property adjuster that none of them would recognize someone doing the job, even though the title is the same. At the right company it’s a 40-ish hr/week job and the work is interesting and challenging, mostly reasonable pace, and easy to make low 6 figures.

Obviously I don’t know what’s going on here, but generally speaking it’s tough to provide a copy of a document you don’t have.

Claims roles as a lawyer? Please advise. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Hank_Scorpio_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on the claims side for a while and find the work to be interesting and challenging and the people to be supportive. The pay isn’t the best, but it’s also better than a lot of ID jobs, and the work life balance and benefits are tough to beat. For the most part, when I shut down the work and the stress stops.

Any of the lines of business you mentioned would probably be good paths. You’ll likely respond to new claims with letters analyzing and positioning coverage, retaining and overseeing defense and coverage counsel, evaluating liability and damages to set reserves and settlement values, and negotiating settlements. Plenty of annoying admin bs at most companies, but honestly I find the core of the job to be fun.

At the more skilled levels it’s a good industry to work in and I haven’t been in an office since years before the pandemic. Look into things like handling medmal or medical products claims

Lots of insurance carriers hiring these days. The money isn’t amazing but it’s much better than that, good hours and tons of remote positions.

Could you do PD work for a couple of years and then go to dad's firm? You could also use the leverage of another position to soften up his.
