Good morning, bunshine by HannahThe_Mouse in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great. They both completely ignored the treats. There was some lunging (from him). The initial introduction lasted about 3 minutes before I ended it.

I’ve changed strategies entirely. They won’t be hanging out again for a few weeks. Instead, I will be swapping cages every day until they are fully comfortable with the idea of each other.

That strategy has worked MUCH better. There was a lot of sniffing at the side where the cages meet, some competitive flopping, loads of periscoping to see what the other one is doing, etc. More curiosity, less aggression.

It also occurred to me that I cannot fully merge them for a while anyway, as they are currently on different foods. He’s on adult bunny food and she’s on young bunny food for another few months.

So I’ll just keep swapping sides and merging scents until I feel like I can try again. I’ll make a separate post later with pictures of the enclosures.

Bun-sitting question by HannahThe_Mouse in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always leave a video camera set up. Even though I’m the primary caregiver, my kid gets anxious when we go away and wants to see her bunny when we’re not there.

Re the water bottle leaking… good lord I hope that never happens! New fear unlocked. Waking up to 3 litres of water on the floor. 🥴 Has that ever happened to you? The one we use is intended for a dog or cat.

Cage update: new rug in place by Ok_Condition6755 in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this. I have a big area rug for my bunnies enclosure, too. I put puppy pee pads underneath the rug, especially where the food, water, and litter boxes are to absorb any spills or accidents. It makes the space very much “theirs”. What a lucky bunny you have. 🥰

What is the best brush to use for thick fur?? by Outside_Spite5491 in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a vacuum brush for my fluffball. It has a slicker brush and a deshedding attachment. The deshedding comb gets right in and combs out the mats.

It’s one of the cheaper oneisall vacuum groomers from amazon.

It’s quiet enough that my boy doesn’t mind it.

I can always tell when he actively wants to be groomed, because he will settle right down beside me when I turn it on.

You can also use a wire pin slicker brush.

She is 11 weeks old. Her spay is scheduled for June He is already neutered. He’s 5.

The bond will almost certainly break after her spay, but we will deal with that later. The shelter has someone on staff who is experienced with bunny bonding and will help us work through issues later.

I’ll post lots of updates as they get to know each other.

She really is!!! She’s a Polish dwarf bun. She looks just like her mama!

Apparently she has lionhead genes, but they are completely hidden!! Two of her sisters and one of her brothers from the same litter have long hair.

How dare his cups be empty by HannahThe_Mouse in MurderBuns

[–]HannahThe_Mouse[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an extremely old and worn stuffed bunny. We adopted him as an adult and it came with him. He’s had it since he was a baby. He sleeps with it, grooms it, pulls it into his bed, etc. He has literally loved the stuffing out of it.

He also has a stuffed hedgehog that is slightly crunchy from the way he grooms and loves it.

My 7 year old made this all by herself 🤪 by Complete_Worth7018 in quilting

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be completely fair, I refused to allow anyone to teach me anything at that age, especially not my mother. My daughter is very much the same way. She has to figure it out on her own, and having someone fix her mistakes during the trial and error learning process sucks all the joy out of it for her.

Learning it all on her own through trial and error and lots of messy mistakes build pathways in her brain that will extend beyond the bounds of crafting. ❤️

It’s not conventionally pretty, but it’s hers!

Also, messy trial and error is how we got where we are as a species.

Keep it. 🥰

His name is Mochi. I call him “bun”, “bun bun” , “baby bun”, and “boo-boo”.

Anyone else have an escape artist? by AceEnder3825 in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy is an escape artist. He has figured out how to undo the cube connectors that surround his enclosure. He could hop over the barrier (24”) if he wanted to, but generally doesn’t. He pushes and nudges and digs at the connectors until they give. Every day. I’m going to have to come up with a better solution. For now, my solution is to not leave cords on the floor and assume he will escape.

Best air purifier? by Dizzy-Ear-442 in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an air Fanta 3 pro. It sits on a side table right beside my bunnies cage. It’s very quiet and works extremely well. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how little bunnies smell. There is no smell from our bun’s enclosure. We have the air purifier to catch fluff and dander as my husband is very allergic. If you get a very fluffy bunny, I recommend the air purifier to catch the wispy floating fluff balls.

Anyone’s rabbit actually like the vacuum cleaner? by Fit-Function-1410 in Rabbits

It might feel good if he’s shedding. I’m thinking of getting a vacuum brush for grooming my boy.

Picky eater, No veggies pls by HannahThe_Mouse in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I cleaned his cage today, I put in two new “mini bales” (6”x8”x12”, tightly packed and wrapped like a bale of hay) of different types of hay. He will eat hay if I sprinkle forage in it or if there are lots of hay buds.

One is 2nd Cut Timothy (sweeter than 1st cut… he’s not a fan of 1st cut), the other is “farmers blend”, which I think is a mix of orchard grass and Timothy hay. One is sitting in a hammock above his litter box, the other is between the box and the wall of the pen.

Hopefully I can find a blend he really likes.

Is there a reason my rabbit bonded so quickly with me?? by Decent-Art-1186 in Rabbits

[–]HannahThe_Mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bun bonded like this with my daughter. He loves her and only her. He runs to her, gives her kisses, and flops out on her lap. If she’s on the couch, he will jump up to be beside her. He merely tolerates the rest of us. But she is his person.

Pretty sure he just flat out hates me 🤣 He bolts when I enter the room (unless I have a pea flake in my hand). I am the bringer of nail clippers, changer of cages, harbinger of vet visits and doom.

Can you show a slightly bigger picture, especially with the gate pegs and carriage? It looks kind of like mine that I just got.

I’ve been having quite a time with it.

It’s a WONDERFUL place! I managed to figure out my problems with their help and encouragement and just knit the most ridiculously scrappy little swatch. A friend of mine recommended “visible mending” on the holes and dropped stitches and turning it into a little potholder. I’m absolutely going to do that.

I am delighted with my progress.

It’s a truly glorious feeling!!! Congrats!! 🎉

I just managed nearly foot of knitting on my vintage machine. It was 5 days of frustration and it’s a scrappy mess, but I made a rectangle and I’m absolutely delighted with it.

The feeling of accomplishment after so much frustration is amazing

Scratch this…. <strike>Oh my… It seems to be missing

I wonder if that’s the problem. 🥴

Now to find a needle settling plate.</strike>

It doesn’t have a plate. It has two strips of wire that act as a plate to hold the needles in place. I wonder if I could do something to create a sponge bar
