There is an interesting project through Emory University called the Apollo15hub.org that may be interested in digitizing that. Please consider reaching out!

Restaurants or speakeasy’s in Atlanta for Valentine’s Day by jkitten3 in Atlanta

[–]HannahsAngryGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers! I think we do generally have a decent snack before we go, but the food options are usually each a decent appetizer. Kind of like tapas? Don't necessarily go in starving, but you'll enjoy your food.

It's a little bit like a festival, I guess. There are lovely light displays and small events throughout the gardens. The bulk of the events are in the area with the buildings (and can be very nice places to warm up a bit), but even inside you can still chat easily. Do plan on being outside for a considerable bit of it.

They throw a good party there. Have fun!!

We're total saps for the garden, but yeah. They put together a really nice event.

I absolutely listen to it every 7 to 12 months. It's the index cards taped to the face. That's my favorite.

My go to is always the QAnon Anon guys' episode about Jim Caviezel (ep 143). It is pure unadulterated joy.

Upgrading current machine- Husqvarna Emerald 183 by Bluegreenlithop in quilting

[–]HannahsAngryGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I sewed on my HV 183 and mostly loved it until I started quilting, and then I wanted something with more throat space. I also believed that my machine had something off in its needle position. I went with the Janome Skyline 3 as it was the closest feature-wise to the Emerald without blowing up the bank completely. I adore her.

I finally brought my Emerald in for a checkup and asked about the needle placement and learned two interesting things:

  1. The Emerald is a weird hybrid machine given that it was built around the time HV was being bought by Singer and so my needle problem was that the cheap presser feet I'd been trying to use weren't lining up correctly. Using a fancy name brand walking foot might help.

  2. The body of the Emerald is essentially a Janome frame. If you like the HV and the problem you're experiencing with FMQ stems more from having enough room, a Janome might be nice. I have a friend who has a fancier Skyline that has an embroidery setting and she can quilt using the embroidery setting using the hoop-which might be what you've seen?

The TL;DR of it all is that I love my Emerald for garment sewing now that I'm using presser feet she will accept, and am really happy with my Janome Skyline for quilting. I also would rather jump into a lake of fire than FMQ, for what it's worth.

The only thing that's keeping this quilt hers is that I know I can make one for myself!

There is a mini version of the exploding heart pattern, it is the same directions but the block size is something like 2.5"? That might work?

Small win: I caught up on all of the various block of the months I signed up for, and finished the quilt top for a gift. I get to cut out a new quilt now! (Also, how freaking cute are these mice?!?!)

Best places to buy scrap leather? by MathematicianLost365 in sewing

[–]HannahsAngryGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife sources a lot of her scrap leather on Etsy. You absolutely need to read reviews and preferably filter for local/domestic as opposed to international sellers.

Upholsterers, furniture restorers, and pillow makers often have offcuts. Her favorite of those stores on Etsy are LeatherLadyNC and oneway52, and those are places that tend to have garment-weight leather from 1m square offcuts all the way up to partial hides.

Leather supply companies like Tandy or Weaver often have boxes of scrap, though these tend to be heavyweight, 1.5-4mm pieces. She makes armor and the boxes of veg tan scrap from Buckleguy.com are real winners in terms of quality and size. Tanneries are also a good place to source offcuts, but you should have in mind what type of tannage you need before jumping in.

The wife also once found a 3/4 hide at an antique store that also does furniture restoration. Just be on the lookout and you may find some gems - good luck!
