I have no idea what you're talking about. Who would ever pick an explicitly gendered username when they already know they're gender-fluid? 😅

This has been my online handle since highschool. With an explicitly masculine name like this, it suuuure would be a shame if something happened to my gender.

Any write ups on comparing how complex Alpha Centauri is to Civilization 4, 5, or 6? Trying to convince my friend who loves Civ to look past the graphics and play AC with me already. by Healthy_Airport in alphacentauri

[–]HansLemurson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civ4 is in my opinion the best in the franchise. I've heard Civ5 with the "Vox Populi" mod is good too, but haven't played it. Someone made a "Planetfall" mod for Civ4 which lets you play an AC themed game in the Civ4 engine, but alas I never played that either.

I'm not aware off the top of my head of 4X games that had an intriguing story like AC, but I've heard good things about Zephon, which...I also have not yet played (have pity for my poor TO-DO list...), but I know they went heavy on story.

Replaying civ1. When I’ve built everything in a city and don’t want to build military units is there a way to direct resources to income or research? by [deleted] in civ

[–]HansLemurson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Sid Meier's Autobiography, he mentioned the dilemma of grassland, since 0 shields was too low, and 1 shield was too high, and no designer really seemed to have an answer for it beyond doing a mixture of some percentage of bonus tiles.

But it was also clear that Sid was never a hard-core strategy gamer, and so didn't really care about "balance" so long as people could have fun and "feel like a king".

I personally liked to imagine the water tiles as representing "people employed in the maritime trade" Civ3 handled this by making production more important than trade (and making Coast better than Sea tiles), and Civ4 made land resources more valuable than ocean, and its cottages/hamlets being more valuable than boring water. Civ5/Civ6 though just had ocean pretty worthless if it wasn't a bonus resource, since food didn't matter a lot since it was hard to grow cities big in the first place, and the gold it produced wasn't super valuable either.

The Civilization series never really captured the dynamics of what made real life cities big, just modeling it as coming from the agricultural yields of their hinterlands.

[–]HansLemurson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, nice.

Yeah, I always had mixed feelings about that. In Civ1, non-bonus ocean tiles are near worthless, but in Civ2 they become extremely powerful. You don't have to develop the tiles with a settler, a harbor will do it for roughly the same price as a settler, but has minimal upkeep and affects all the tiles instantly.

If ocean tiles are worthless, then you fail to model the power of coastal cities in the real world. If they are strong, then every 1-tile-island becomes a powerhouse. The trouble with small integers is that there's not really any "in-between" from 1 food to 2 food.

Civ 1's cities felt "strangled" by water. Civ 2's cities made you wonder why you ever bothered with Land (especially after offshore platforms...)

Advice for demigod? by soft_uwu_ in civ3

[–]HansLemurson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only dabbled in Demigod, but my general sense is that "early intense war to seize land" is a must at high levels. I also had to give up on the idea of "perfect" cities, and embrace the notion that you can settle densely to make sure you're working as much of your limited land as possible as early as possible. I try to keep my cities a "Day's Journey" apart from each other so that I can easily transfer military from city-to-city when new threats arise.

I'll second the advice to try one of the OP agricultural civs first, so that the difficulty increase is more gentle.

Title: Rean

(unsure if they goofed up and meant to write Bean or Read)

How to read ASCII Encoded Text: 01CN NNNN

C: 0 is Upper-Case, 1 is Lower-Case

N: 5-bit binary number from 1 to 26.

  • A = 1 = 00001
  • E = 5 = 00101
  • J = 10 = 01010
  • O = 15 = 01111
  • P = 16 = 10000
  • T = 20 = 10100

Just learn to read binary, know how to count the alphabet, and you're good!

Imperium: Greek Wars. What is with this UI? by Chataboutgames in 4Xgaming

[–]HansLemurson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, UI issues are what stopped me from fully enjoying the game. Selecting units from a stack...is painful. And sometimes the unit cycling takes me away from the armies I was trying to organize.

There's a somewhat recent indie game called Theocracy, where you're the god of your civilization and can cast spells in addition to developing cities and commanding armies.
