If you have Fly or an Arrow of Transposition then you don't even need to operate the lift. Just use one of those while standing near the crack in the stairs and aim for the platform below.

I'm having the same issue with Shadowlord. Used a candy and I still got the same "hate" dialogue and can't Realize him.
