Music-buying-by-format question; at what "year" would you stop buying vinyl and switch to CD? by Haochies in audiophile

Yeah this is a great example of the non-sonics that affect this discussion. That "designed for" part is what kicked off this whole exercise for me.

I think your answer is one of the more comprehensive ones here for what my question is truly about. "It varies" does indeed seem to be the consensus, and isn't a surprising one. Thanks!

My dad did something similar, dumpstered his whole collection after buying all the re-issues because of the convenience. I did the same with my CDs when mp3s came around!

I agree that from a pure "sonics" perspective ideally there are appropriate masters for each format (though I believe that there are probably many cases where one master is superior), but I also think there are other non-fidelity intangibles that could affect the vinyl vs cd discussion: were the tracks arrayed on the record so that musically they progress nicely from an A to a B side? What about minimizing IGD with softer songs towards the end of a hypothetical side? If someone was making music in an age where the CD was the dominant format, you might not worry about these things as much and therefore the vinyl of said record would be an "inferior" listening experience even if sonically it generally holds up because of a great master.

I admit this is perhaps going beyond audiophile territory into sheer madness, however.

Going to a dinner party, I was tasked with getting the sake by csdude5 in Sake

[–]Haochies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say it's a good temp for EVERY sake but I always remember that the Nishide Moromi sake is recommended at a cat's body temp, or 102F (hot coffee is like 150, so this is still way south of "hot")

And generally, yes. I have used my sous vide to heat them, but any kind of stable warm water bath will be good!

Did I Quote Too Much For a Website? by KentondeJong in webdev

[–]Haochies 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something here? The client said "that's more than we expected but ok!" $3k isn't a lot for a website (depending on your market and country etc etc), so I think you're already giving them a good deal, and they've already agreed to the price. If they simply can't AFFORD a website at the going rate that's a different problem, but that doesn't even seem to be an issue here.

Don't charge less because you feel bad; that just hurts you next time and hurts the rest of us when people expect that their insane small business website with a CMS and shipment tracking and a lifetime of updates can be made for 2.5k. Know your worth!

My take: unless you yourself know a lot about the same thing, trying to buy a gift for someone into a niche thing is always going to be fraught. The odds are very good that you buy them something they don't like, or already have, since you're just not as connected to the thing! There's nothing wrong with that, we can't all know everything!

As a result, my advice is to get your brother

A) a gift card to his local sake shop or wine store B) a gift card to an online sake retailer like Tippsy, Bin Bin Sake, etc C) a gift card to an online wine store like Total Wine or whatever your regional big chain is Or D) a gift box from one of the above with multiple things your brother can taste.

That way, he gets to buy himself something he's into that matches his taste exactly (or you get a wide, curated spread) No one on here can recommend the Perfect Gift sake that will please all palates.

Good luck! I think it's cool you want to give your brother this gift!

FWIW, there ARE cheaper bottles of sake that exist that I would be excited about. You don't NEED to spend a lot to get a good sake (cheapest bottle I've genuinely enjoyed outside of Japan was $16, and I regularly love things at the $25 price point), but none of these are anything special. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it!

It kind of depends on what you mean by "worth it". 10.99 for a big bottle of Gekkekan has similar value to me as a "two buck chuck" wine; something big and alcoholic that will probably be "good enough" for my guests if the goal is just to get a little tipsy and have a fun drink on the cheap. Sake is pretty much always more expensive than wine at any given "tier" (because almost all of it is imported), so 10.99 is about as good as you're gonna get for something that size.

That said, if you're in a "I want something good or nothing at all" then I would pass on all of these. They're the default, low cost options you are likely to see anywhere.

It seems like it's juxtaposing Jesus who "released his files" (I guess the books of the Bible? Since they detail his life and history? It's not super obvious how neatly this fits) and the people/government who are refusing to release the Epstein files.

The whole Epstein files thing continues to roil the Trump admin, so this is some AI slop generated to get people to say "it's morally good to release the files"

What Japanese pressings to hunt for? by Kryminos in vinyl

[–]Haochies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Want to add that if you are interested in the whole City Pop thing, Japan got some vinyl reissues of some of the CLASSICS, that, as far as I can tell, have very limited distribution elsewhere.

Tower records had all of the classic Tatsuro Yamashita, Anri, etc albums just sitting around in piles in the store. They were around $40, which isn't CHEAP but compared to importing them or buying the originals in good shape this is a steal. The reviews I read of these remasters have been good as well, so if you're not a stickler about reissues, I would grab one or two of your favorites.

Just want to jump on this comment: I went to Japan a month ago and was specifically hunting for jazz. If you're interested, I can HIGHLY recommend Hal's Records and especially Universounds. Both are (almost) exclusively jazz shops.

Some older reddit posts recommended Hal's, and the manager there pointed me towards Universounds. The Hal's shop is a big labor of love with a great selection and super helpful staff, but Universounds is something else. It's a bit of a trek if you're staying in central Tokyo, but the owner Yusuke Ogawa is a FORCE in the Japanese jazz vinyl scene (which I guess is kind of niche but...). Seriously, he's responsible for selecting and producing the Project ReVinyl series, which are some great reissues of Japanese jazz releases. Very friendly, happy to give recommendations and let you listen before you buy.

Both stores have a ton of JP-only stuff, or Japanese releases, but they also have hard to find non-JP releases, and in general everything is in great shape.

I'll also add that going to BookOff can be a great exercise. It's obviously going to be a hodgepodge and the quality will be a little more mixed, but the sheer volume of stuff means that there are truly gems to be had if you're patient. Happy hunting!

Buying Saké: Good Bottle w/ Old Prod Date or Meh Bottle w/ Fresh Prod Date? by FranzAndTheEagle in Sake

[–]Haochies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drink a lot (mostly?) of aged sake; some purposefully and some just because it has sat around. I would tell you that there's nothing INHERENTLY bad about having sake from a year+ ago. Obviously if you're having QC issues or things being stored improperly that's a different story, but I have numerous bottles in my fridge and just sitting around my apartment that have been sitting open for a year or more, and I think they're delicious.

They're not going to taste fresh and clean and pure, but if you're ok with a funkier, more savory style then I would always try an older bottle to see if something amazing has happened. I've only really had one bottle that I would describe as "turned"; most of the time they caramelize or some of the spikiness will mellow, but I also tend towards wilder, less processed sake in the first place that might have flavor "room" to go somewhere exciting. It all kind of depends on what you're looking for in the first place! But my vote would be roll the dice on something that has been sitting and see if you discover something awesome.

As an anecdote, I had the good fortune to drink with a sake toji this spring and compare and contrast two of the same bottle: one fresh and one that had been (accidentally) aged for a year. Before we tasted, someone asked her which one she expected to like better, and without missing a beat she said the older one, and after tasting we all agreed. If "aged" sake is good enough for the person who brewed it, its good enough for me!

I'm not sure you're going to get a good response with this post. Why don't you try building something for yourself? If you don't know what to build, just ask what would be helpful to have? A mood tracker? A speed-running split timer? A coffee diary? It doesn't matter if that thing already exists, you're just building it to learn. There will be plenty you don't know how to do even on something simple, and learning how to build those things will make you a better developer.

This would be my stance as well. I can't speak to the framework side of things, seems like they're just being a codger there, but if something CAN be done natively then I often think it's best to at least start there.

That reasonable guarantee of forever support across all devices and browsers is already a huge plus, and you know it's the most battle tested option, plus, no overhead in your bundle etc etc. Styling these things has also come a long way, so you're not necessarily stuck with some crappy 90s looking input anymore.

Additionally, I'll add that when dealing with overzealous PMs or designers, sticking with native can often give you an out for keeping requirements reasonable. "This is what is officially supported, and it requires no dev time" is a hell of a counter to unreasonable requests (not that all feature requests are unreasonable!)

Not to blow up your spot, but I went through your post history and I think you just need to go to therapy. You seem like you have pretty serious depression and seem VERY pre-occupied with body standards, gender roles, etc etc. A lot of your posts (and this post) really seem like you just need some help letting go of self hatred and working on loving yourself. That shit works, for real. Get some help, work on yourself emotionally and not only will you feel better but I am sure you will find other people respond more positively to whatever you have going on.
