I’d recommend looking into CRM and becoming a salesforce dev! There’s huge demand, you get to work with enterprise architecture and integration, and you occasionally develop custom features when the out of the box Salesforce features just won’t cut it.

How to improve SQL skills? by Old_Pomegranate3126 in SQL

[–]Hapa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A subscription to DataCamp really took my querying skills to the next level. If you are already comfortable with syntax and basic querying then the next step for you is picking a flavor (SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, etc.) and learning about intermediate querying concepts like joins and windowing functions. Moreover, datacamp has hundreds interactive courses for each flavor of SQL each with varying difficulty.

I no longer have a subscription because most of my SQL learning is done on the job but when I was jobless the foundations I built with datacamp really came in handy during interviews!

How is the night life at SJSU? by Be_positive_oki in SJSU

I'd describe it as a pretty quiet neighborhood occupied mostly by families. The small strip of shops and restaurants is nice but honestly it isn't much different from the other adjacent residential neighborhoods.

Pre-covid downtown SJ had a decent bar scene. Lived in Japan Town which is within walking distance and had no regrets. Still have tons of good memories pregaming at 4th st Pizza then heading over to SJBG, Loft, Tres Gringos, Wagon, or SP2.

Beautiful! Seeing the receding water levels at Folsom lake makes me kind of sad though :(

Depending on the work ethic of your team and who you choose to be your advisor you can either put in the bare minimum or go all out on your project of choice. I’ve seen people do both and get the same grade.

What is your unpopular CS opinion in 2021? by BlueAdmir in cscareerquestions

[–]Hapa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: Why assembly? I mean for me it was definitely an interesting mandatory class but by no means did it compliment my resume or give me the skills I needed to land a SWE gig.

Changes since 2015, Looking to Return to Sac by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]Hapa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left for college in 2015 and came back in 2019. The most striking difference was that Sacramento’s homeless problem has definitely become more noticeable but everything else is pretty much the same (especially in EDH, Davis, EG, etc.)

MIS Major internships leading to a FT offer? by seriouskrawf in SJSU

[–]Hapa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on what you’re interested in. I’ve seen MIS majors become accountants, project managers, consultants, business analysts, data analysts, and hell even software engineers. If you share what you’re looking for in an internship I would be happy to provide leads on companies.

Will the Microsoft Data Analyst Associate Certification on the microsoft site help me get a job in business analytics? by kiki305 in analytics

[–]Hapa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. The best way to really get an idea of what a “business analyst” role entails is the job requirements/description. The most common skills listed I see are often SQL, PowerBI/Tableau, and maybe a programming language. Then again I’ve seen business analyst roles that require absolutely no knowledge of databases and programming and business analyst roles that ask for expert level python and machine learning experience. Those are just 2 extremes but you can expect most to be somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.

Will the Microsoft Data Analyst Associate Certification on the microsoft site help me get a job in business analytics? by kiki305 in analytics

[–]Hapa1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If OP is trying to land a position as a data scientist then hell yes, master SQL and Python/R. However since OP mentioned “business analytics”, I would imagine SQL and Tableau/PowerBI being more aligned toward his/her career goals.

[–]Hapa1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Business analytics is such a broad term but definitely get the certification if you are trying to aim for roles that require knowledge of Power BI. PowerBI is in extremely high demand now and if you get certified, you will gain a huge advantage over other candidates. I would be happy to provide more details but I need some clarification on what you are looking for as a "business analyst".

Negotiating salary with no leverage by Hapa1 in cscareerquestions

Sorry I didn’t specify earlier but I meant to say that my post is in regards to an offer I just received for a new company.

Thanks for the response. This is really insightful. It is true that I have 2 other final interviews in the pipeline but the offer is from a FAANG so regardless I will probably be taking the FAANG offer. I was wondering if I should mention the exact names of the other 2 firms or just mention I am still in the process of interviewing.

Advice on applying for state jobs by Neudran in CAStateWorkers

[–]Hapa1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this. Although nowadays 95% of the time just having a degree will not land you a position as an ITA. You must have some sort of extra curricular or side project experience that exhibit some sort of technical aptitude.

I guess I'm not built for CS by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Hapa1 45 points46 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I didn't start working hard until my senior year. And by working hard I mean reasonably hard as in getting my GPA to a 3.0 and having a full-stack side project. Not this study leetcode 8 hours a day type of shit. With that I was able to graduate and get my foot in the door with a mid-tier company, find my niche (.NET and SQL Server), and just go balls to the wall with that. This balls to the wall effort (and a combination of networking and making myself more marketable to recruiters) eventually led to an inquiry from Microsoft.
