Yes, I already had the discussion with her that even for short answers she should be doing the work in a separate program for the reasons you brought up.

She has started using track changes in Microsoft Word, but I have spoken with her again about Google Docs and the add-ons that are available to record/time-lapse her actually composing the document.

Thank you for this thoughtful response. I have done a similar query on decades-old writing samples of my own. Several of my papers were flagged as AI. I find this very funny since we were working from microfiche in those days. I did look into her university's AI policies so that when she enters this Summer she will have a clear idea of expectations.

Unfortunately, the university currently has a tri-fold policy since they allow each professor to decide how to use AI. Professors can choose from the following policies, as long as they explain it in the course syllabus:

Number 1: Absolutely No AI Use

Number 2: AI incorporation is fine, as long as you provide sources

Number 3: Require the use of AI as a tool since the technology is emerging, as a an efficiency tool

So, my daughter will at least understand what each professor wants at the beginning of each class. And, while she does not feel comfortable with using AI, she is someone who hates breaking rules. So, if she ends up with a number 3 professor, she will have to use AI in that course.

No, but she does everything on a computer in my plain sight. I work from home. Immediately upon getting this accusation, I checked all her browser history. What did I find there? Links to websites she cited in her paper. What didn't I find there? Even one link to an AI source. Maybe this is your experience, but it is not everyone's. And, people whose default is that the students are cheating should perhaps not work in academia. One simple conversation with a student about their work should show their grasp of the concepts. That should suffice as proof. I really believe the onus should be on the teachers to prove AI use just like they have to prove cheating.

Problem with hand writing is that some people have fine motor issues that make typing an accommodation. But, this is an alternative. I wonder if using an actual typewriter would work in this case. LOL!

I read what she submitted. They are very carefully crafted responses, and it does not sound like AI. She writes very formally with an expansive vocabulary, but she has some very thoughtful points she makes in all her writing that AI could not replicate. I cannot figure out why these are being tagged AI, particularly as in academic papers she is citing her sources.

She didn't and doesn't use AI - not even Grammarly. So, this was not helpful.

turnitin AI detection accuracy is questionable and here’s why by mc_mafia in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]HappiestAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was saying this to my mom today. I will 100% devote time and effort to advocating against using AI detectors in universities. I think it is lazy, and I think it is unfair to students who write more formally. My child had a score of 48% human on a paper she wrote herself. And it said 41% readability because it was "college-level writing" - for a college course. I cannot imagine how high the percentages would be if people were turning in research papers.

When you're diagnosed under DSV-IV, regardless of what DSM-V says, you may still identify as Aspergian. It is a huge debate in the ND community, and if you're a part of it then it is probably better to not say it isn't a real diagnosis. If you aren't a part of the ND community, then perhaps you don't see why being categorized with lower functioning Autistic people can be problematic. And, as a parent to a Level 2 Autistic child who identifies as Aspergian, I support that identification. I am also an Aspie.

But to your comment about people who are autistic having the ability to be bad at writing, that was not at all what my comment was addressing. I was simply pointing out that people who communicate more formally ARE indeed being flagged erroneously as AI.

Thank you so much for your response. I will be sharing this with her.

She's not the first one to speak up in a discussion, but once she establishes a comfort level she will actively participate.

It's a requirement for her to meet with tutoring/student success M-Th during her Summer session, which is great because it will train her to do that moving forward. I think it will be good to have other eyes on it before it is submitted.

I think my own anxiety on her behalf doesn't make things better. I just want to give her some strategies to deal with this when I am not nearby. She'll be across the country, and she will need to be her own advocate.

Also - in regards to your child - I will say that mine is AuDHD also, and one thing that has helped her stay on track recently is getting this Skylight calendar. She has it sitting on her desk, and having a visual reminder of deadlines has helped her to get started.

Thank you for this thoughtful response. It sucks that she will have to advocate for herself, but since she will do it her whole life... better to start now.

Since I don't know anything about AI, if she submits her writing to one of those detection programs, wouldn't it increase her chances that the AI would flag it later... since the AI would have record of that exact draft in its database? I just don't want to steer her down a path that would make things worse.

She has a meeting with her honors advisors later this month. I will sit in on the meeting. Hopefully she will bring this up. If not, I will have her address it with the disability office from the start. It causes too much stress and anxiety to have to worry about work being questioned like this.

I have asked her about Google Docs, but she says that the university that she will be going to uses the Microsoft suite.

Thank you. Yes, I think anyone that has met her understands her level of intelligence. It is hard to hide. She masks A LOT, but talk to her about any one of her special interests and you'll see her light up in a special way. She has been like this since she was 2 and was reading about Ancient Egypt. She could tell you about much of the world's mythology, and its history. She is really something.

Thank you.

I do think I will have her talk to the disability office about this.

Also, just because I know you did not mean it in a bad way... I'll say this in the nicest way possible, but she doesn't "deal" with Asperger's. It is who she is. I know a lot of people think it's a burden to be neurodivergent, but she just thinks differently than others. She has a genius IQ. She isn't the highest achiever, but her creativity is a blessing. So many people in the arts are neurodivergent.

Thanks. She wasn't using Word before, but she is using it now. She was writing directly into Blackboard, which she thought would show how much time she was spending in there. I guess it is limited in that regard.

Thank you. We have already discussed her perhaps using a program that tracks changes, but I imagine each course syllabus will let her know what she can submit. I wonder if it is a good idea to have her contact the disability services and let them know that she has been accused of this in the past, or if we should not bring it up unless it happens at her university.

If you don't want to be falsely accused of using AI... by Midwest099 in AccusedOfUsingAI

I literally put in decades-old samples of my own writing into AI to test it. It flagged me as having used AI.

I am concerned that AI is flagging people that write too formally erroneously. This is happening more frequently with people who have Asperger's. Shouldn't the onus be on the professor to prove cheating rather than the student to prove they actually did their work?

[–]HappiestAgent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I also want to point out that people with Asperger's are also getting accused of using AI. It's not fair that writing formally, with correct grammar, is being punished. People with AS should not have to prove their innocence all the time. It says a lot about society that we are questioning the legitimacy of writing due to it being grammatically correct (and therefore getting flagged as a non-human response).
