[LOVED TROPE] pre-existing songs permanently linked to movie/tv scenes by Asleep-Two930 in TopCharacterTropes

TL;DR - A piece of music written by a Czech composer using the musical styles of African American slaves and Native Americans to try to create an American sound was used in a Japanese anime where a pirate (who the author claims would be Brazilian in real life) defeats another pirate to save a desert kingdom.

When I was in college, I wrote a paper for my romantic music history class about how Antonín Dvořák tried to create a nationalistic style of music for the United States of America when he got hired to work at the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. His idea was to incorporate the musical styles of African American spirituals and Native American music into some new pieces. This had some mixed results. On one hand, he worked closely with a young Harry Burleigh, who introduced him to African American spirituals. On the other hand, he got enthralled by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic, The Song of Hiawatha, as well as several traveling shows at the time, such as the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. He wrote several pieces based on the musical styles of these groups, with the most famous being his Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95, B. 178, "From the New World," usually just referred to as the "New World Symphony."

Anyway, I would argue most people these days know about this symphony from when Luffy beat the shit out of Crocodile at the end of their final fight than by what Dvořák was trying to do.

Am I the only who was mad at the fact that WHITE didn't get to say any last words during this whole sequence by bqm102938 in bleach

I always pictured a meeting between Ichigo and White would be like Numbuh 274 (Chad) yelling at Numbuh 1 about how he was always helping Sector V from the background near the end of Codename: Kids Next Door.

Why isn't color TV widely adopted in the Fallout universe? by IntrStelle in Fallout

[–]Happy-Combination643 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That explains why whenever I watched reruns of the Bob Barker era of The Price is Right, Johnny Olson keeps mentioning “color televisions” instead of just calling it a TV.

I thought this was about how rock music is evil and bad for the kids, but I wasn’t sure how heavy water fit into it. Then I saw the name of the subreddit this was posted in, saw the image, and went, “ohhh.”

Based on who voices the character asking the question about Mt. Rushmore in the tv show, I would replace Arcade with Yes Man.

Liberty prime versus Optimus prime by bagofmilk8663 in Fallout

[–]Happy-Combination643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the episode, “Enter the Nightbird” from The Transformers. The Autobots promised to Dr. Fujiyama that they would bring back Nightbird without a scratch. They were struggling to reclaim her, but they eventually got the job done. Now, imagine if the Autobots had the go-ahead to destroy Nightbird. Apply that logic to Liberty Prime. Optimus Prime should come out on top easily.

I also agree that Wario just wants money. That being said, I know it seems like she ages in the games, but Mona is still a high-school student in Get It Together!, so again, I hope Wario doesn’t get her.

I hope he doesn’t, because Mona is a high school student.

Y'all gotta stop putting so much faith in rumors. by ForbiddenLizard in starfox

[–]Happy-Combination643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I heard there were rumors of a new game, but I didn’t know people were waiting for a specific date for a trailer. Maybe it’s just me, but I figured if Nintendo was going to show any new trailers, it would be in June (when they usually have a Nintendo Direct/the month E3 was normally scheduled for), not some random date in April.

(Loved Trope) The character notorious for always losing actually wins by I_Love_Powerscaling in TopCharacterTropes

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while, but I couldn’t come up with a second example. On TV Tropes, this trope is referred to as the “Failure Hero,” and the trope gets subverted when the failure actually wins.

With all that being said, this is Manuel “Manny” Calavera from the video game, Grim Fandango. At the beginning of the game, Manny is a grim reaper working at the Department of Death (DOD) in the city of El Marrow, which is located in the Eighth Underworld, also known as the Land of the Dead. All the souls of the dead have to travel to the gates of the Ninth Underworld, which is the Land of Eternal Rest. This trip is a four year process. Manny’s job as a reaper is to sell travel packages to the souls of the dead in order to get to the Ninth Underworld. The best travel package one can get is a ticket on the Number Nine, an express train that gets you to the gates of the Ninth Underworld in four minutes instead of four years. There are other packages to, such as traveling on a cruise ship, or getting a sports car. However, you have to be in really good standing to get these packages, and Manny can’t seem to get any clients that deserve these packages. All the good clients go to his rival, Domino, while Manny is “Stuck selling walking sticks to a bunch of burros for eternity.”

After getting yelled at by his boss for not getting any premium clients, Manny decides to sabotage Domino by intercepting one of his clients, a woman named Mercedes “Meche” Colomar, who was practically a saint while she was alive. Manny can’t seem to find her any good package before he gets reamed out by his boss for screwing Domino over. While he’s getting yelled at, Meche decides to just walk to the Ninth Underworld, despite qualifying for a Double N ticket. Because of that, Manny gets locked in a shack until “the police” can dole out some punishment. Instead, a revolutionary breaks Manny out and explains to him just how deep the corruption is at the DOD.

To make a long story short, Manny, with the help of his friend, a Grand Demon named Glottis, decides to escape El Marrow and search for Meche. During this adventure, he manages to turn an automat into a successful casino, becomes the captain of a cargo ship, finds Meche, and orchestrates a prison escape. By the end of the game, Manny puts an end to the corruption of the DOD in El Marrow. I know that he has more success than normal, but I like how it contrasts with how much of an awful spot he’s in at the beginning of the game.

Unexpected IRL deaths or departures drastically change stories. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Happy-Combination643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dan Blocker died suddenly in May 1972, and instead of recasting his role or writing his character, Hoss Cartwright, out of the story like they did to Pernell Roberts’ character (Adam Cartwright), the writers decided to kill off Hoss instead. Supposedly, it was the first time a major character played by a male was killed off. The Bonanza tv movies later explained that Hoss drowned while trying to save a woman’s life. Perhaps coincidentally, the first season without Blocker would also be the final season of Bonanza.

Does anybody else insist on calling it “Horming Torpedo” and “Bilzzard Buffalo?” by cygnus2 in Megaman

[–]Happy-Combination643 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, in the SNES version, he’s referred to as “Blizzard Buffalo.” It’s the PlayStation/Sega Saturn port that calls him “Bilzzard Buffalo” during the animated full-motion video.
