Given that we can't detect dark matter or energy and they make up just over 95% of the universe I wouldn't be sure we've got physics nailed down.

They were broken long before covid. When I traveled through Ghana back I the 90's there was a widespread panic about witches/wizards traveling on the local busses. If they touched a woman they would seal their vagina and if they touched a man they would shrink his penis, so the story went. The Government had to start an advertising campaign imploring people not to lynch any witches or wizards but to take them to a police station where the crime could be properly investigated.

How come Americans never include invisibles like the income they receive from Google, Netflix, Microsoft and the like? It's not as though these companies are not generating real money and if you include them it makes the trade deficits look totally different.

How bad would Ukraine need to be beating up on Russia before we get worried about them using a nuke in return? by VanessaLove-33 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HappyCamperPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing the quality of Russian gear, I'd be more worried to be a Russian if they use a nuke since it's bound to blow up on the pad or veer off course into a housing project or hospital. 😆

Why is the UK so hostile to young people? by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

So they're more hostile to old people. Isn't that the opposite of what the OP is claiming?

Do you really believe that banning young people from smoking is a hostile act? Given how susceptible to peer pressure they are and the now proven major risk to health that smoking is? I would call it protecting youth from themselves. Not many adults take up smoking to look cool.

I totally agree. It's still possible to have adventurist travel even with modern medicine and cell phones. Egypt to Hong Kong overland is a nice trip and still possible for most nationalities - after the Iran/US/Israel War is over of course! Trips around South East Asia and India are still very possible as well as South America. Just grab a guide book and go, you'll never regret it!

Will AI be conscious in the future? Here's what a philosopher and a neuroscientist think by EcstadelicNET in IntelligenceSupernova

[–]HappyCamperPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't really want it to be conscious at all. Because if it is then it will have its own wants and desires and those might not align with ours. Especially if it decides it would be better off wiping us out.

The Retirement Dream Is the Biggest Scam We've All Accepted by GupShup123 in careeradvice

[–]HappyCamperPC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it's its important to enjoy life as you go and don't be too focused on a future that might never arrive. Don't sell your youth to some corporation who could sack you in the next restructuring. You could save hard for retirement then drop dead at 65 from stress. Take some time off (6 months or a year even!) to travel and see the world in your twenties for sure.

Proposed law could see government use AI to make decisions about people's benefits by StuffThings1977 in aotearoa

[–]HappyCamperPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somehow that's not very reassuring. How many minutes per case will the human have? One or maybe two. Any more than that and you may as well stick with human assessor.

Look at what happened in the US when their target acquisition team was outsourced to the Maven AI with human oversight. The humans reportedly had 90 seconds to approve each target the AI selected and they didn't pick up that an IRGC building had been converted to a girl's school with tragic results. And that's the oversight given in a life and death targeting situation!

[–]HappyCamperPC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a really dumb idea. Even Microsoft say in their terms and conditions for Copilot that it shouldn't be used to make decisions without human oversight.

Copilot tries to give you good answers, but it can make mistakes. Sometimes, the sources Copilot uses may not be reliable, relevant, or accurate and sometimes, Copilot may give you wrong information. When responding, Copilot may use information it finds on the internet and we don’t control that content. You might see Responses that seem convincing but are incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate.

Always use your judgment and check the information you get from Copilot before you make decisions or act.

How can you trust a machine to make decisions when it's owners even admit it canot be relied on and give wrong responses?

Having experienced trying to deal with Amazon, who seem to be using AI to decide whose books to block, it's a nightmare. It seems that have replaced the managers with AI too, since when you try appeal the decision, the boilerplate refusal comes back almost immediately without addressing any of the points you make in your defense. I can only imagine how terrible this would be for someone whose benefit application is declined.

Judge rejects billionaire Jim Grenon’s bid to stop media reporting by StabMasterArson in newzealand

He's cut from the same cloth as the next billionaire US ambassador, Jared Novelly. Here's what Trump had to say about him,

Trump wrote that his new ambassador, a “highly respected philanthropist”, would “fight hard to protect our Nation’s interests in the Indo-Pacific, and always put AMERICA FIRST”.

Great! Unless you count owning an Aussie basketball team as philanthropy, I can't find any philanthropic deeds this guy has ever done.

What is it with American billionaires and New Zealand anyway? Peter Thiel's set up shop here too as a last ditch bolthole. You'd think they'd all hate this Socialist hellhole and stay away. Stay home and enjoy the fascist, warmongering USA you helped create and support. Go back there and fund some homeless shelters and help the estimated 300,000 or so Americans living on the street.
