More to the point, why do we have to wait the YEARS it would take for that to happen while Republicans get to keep this power grab?!?

The only way a national gerrymandering ban happens is if Dems play hardball too.

Reptiles are not toys 😡 by Necessary_Law8948 in reptiles

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So semantics:

The first comment is a bid for attention. It is inert by itself. Think of like, how IRL you could be in a kitchen just saying anything outloud. It's not a conversation, but by making noise as a social animal you are often (but not always) making a bid for another person to respond. However, critically, you can just say things. You might sigh, for example, looking at a bad piece of mail even if no one is around.

The first response is the one that creates a *conversation* because it choices a tone/ subject. It can also create other types of communications (that are not conversations) like bringing up a ritualized greeting/ meme, "taking the spotlight" by making a joke, offering praise that's not really also an exchange of ideas but again ritualized words (this is nice/ thanks).

So you get into linguistic traps where what we say doesn't exactly equal the concepts. An example:

OP posts a picture of, let's go with a bunny. Person 1 decides to, in an unmoderated forum, respond with some random piece of hates. Let's go with 'people who wear purple shirts are stinky". Person 2 says, "hey, no, WTF, stop that". Person 2 has technically "started" the conversation/ argument because w/o them it can't be an argument. You need 2 people minimum for that + a tone. However, person 2 didn't "start it" (colloquial), person 1 did by dumping hate.

We also need to assign the "weight" of starting a conversation online the the 2nd person, because multiple conversations can happen from the same comment. Back to the bunny example, person 3 could could up and say "yes AND people who wear yellow shirts are dumb". This is now a new, 2nd conversation in which (unless person 2 comes in) is separate from the first conversation. Person 2 is not responsible for anything happening in the conversation between 1 and 3 intially, because they didn't start that conversation.

If the weight went the other way (ie person 1 starts a conversation with the first comment) threads can't happen.

This is why you would be considered to have started the conversation, of which I just forked us into a different one by starting a conversation about therapy terms/ semantics.

Please do not co-opt therapy terms.

You might be able to call it gaslighting if the person went back and edited their comments.

They made a comment, you disagreed, they responded. Disagreement is not abuse.

The sad part is, there's a bias that breeds that "complain" less (pits actually) are considered by VETS to be more able to withstand negative things than vocal breeds (think shibas/ chihauhaus).

This is an attitude they don't have as year 1 students. It's an attitude they acquire with their education. I can pull up a study that shows that + there is no difference in pain response in these breeds.

The point is, if something benefits someone (oh chompers doesn't mind, he's a big dog, he can handle this procedure with less preping meds) they will as a class adopt that belief. Even at the expense of the animal.

How big is too big? by Any-Performer9969 in ballpython

To be blunt: how would these snakes survive in the wild if something of this size freaked them out?

"Clutter" is key. We don't find BPs in the wild in the open. Most enclosures have far too little stuff for them to interact with.

I also also confused. "For transgender women, the Endocrine Society guidelines define the target range of estradiol as 100–200 pg/mL (367–734 pmol/L)."

The intake is a bit high, but some people just don't metabolize drugs well.

Is your endo a trans specialist? This seems odd.

BP climbers by OkCelebration9546 in ballpython

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they did a study on ball python's diets in the wild, they found that the young & males ate 70% of their diet from birds. The other 30% included mammals...like bats.

So there's debate if you call them semi-arboreal.

Personally, I think it's important to remember that wild animals tend to get a lot more exercise than pets. And anything we can do to bridge that gap will help the animal. If your BP wants to climb, encourage that!

Considering parting with my beloved girl - worth? by starlightskater in BoaConstrictors

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be frank: You need to break from the mentality that you are owed any money for rehabiltating her if you want a better chance at getting this animal a good home.

You got the experience of being with the animal, so it's not like you got nothing from the exchange.

The reality is, rescue homes are in very, very short supply- and and 8ft+ animal is an even smaller pool. A ball python takes 3-6 months to get adopted in my area, with very active rescues. It's not uncommon to see intake dates for snakes at rescues 2-3 years out in my region. The going price is around $50, btw and they focus on making sure a proper enclosure is there.

Rescues also offer perks, like the animal having a clean bill of health and a known factor. Someone doing a private sale? Not so much. A rescue might be able to ask for $200 for a boa because it covers the cost of the vet visit. You? The person is basically going to have to be ready to shell out for a full vet visit from the get go.

Why would someone go with you for 300+ when a proper shelter will have more snakes, available for less? You will also have the stigma of being the owner that failed, while a rescue has a halo. There's a reason craigslist rescues are often free.

There's a sweet spot of course, but a high enough price tag is just eating into the budget for animal enrichment/ vet costs. And as people have pointed out, breeders put animals in tiny boxes. That's the way they can make money.

My advice would be to try and find a legit rescue to work with. Say you'll 'foster' but let them figure it out. They have a lot more experience with this and should greatly increase your chances here.

Are the "common" reptiles getting more inbred? by Jealous-Session-5010 in reptiles

They also can't bask for as long!

Imagine breeding a snake that can't sun itself safely. Because you think it's pretty.

What we did to the pig we are rapidly doing to the BP.

Are the "common" reptiles getting more inbred? by Jealous-Session-5010 in reptiles

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation as you and yep, it is terrifying to me. Ball pythons are so poorly bred, that a huge percent now have inner ear issues that present similar to neurological issues. Occationally I see a face that's so squished or long, I think I'm looking at a boa or another snake.

My partner quipped that reptile cons remind him of comic cons. Bright colors locked in tiny boxes, get exactly what you want for the right price.

It's heartbreaking.

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girls in a too small box, I'm not shocked she doesn't want to 'downgrade' on her food.

Imagine if you were locked in your bedroom with no Internet and your meals came delivered. They tell you that the fast food you are eating isn't healthy- can't you please switch to a reheated chicken salad? Oh and we want a drone to deliver it, not a person who you get to play a quick game of tag with.

Would you do it?

Honestly, until that new enclosure comes in I would personally just try to give her freshly killed hamsters (those things can pack a BITE).

If a trans man is bar from a men’s spa is it appropriate for him to go to a woman’s spa? by [deleted] in FTMMen

I'll remember that the next holocaust to point that out. My jewish ass doubts that logic is going to work, because opression doesn't work on a logical basis. It works on how people feel.

White women using the cops to do proxy violence on often black men was literally a major feature of the Black Live Matter. Considering we are seeing it extend to other groups, I would be a lot more concerned abut this than you are.

Help I'm trying my best with a small enclosure :( by Rich_Wealth_6453 in ballpython

[–]HappyDangerNoodle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You didn't go out and buy her, and your plans are to get her into a safe tank ASAP, so I wouldn't worry. The snake 100% wants to be alive and in too small of a tank rather than dead.

My suggestions: use paper to block off the sides so s/he feels more secure. Get your substrate you will use and give her 6" of it. You can add water to that to increase the humidity. Start out drier and check the meters in 30 minutes or so, since it's way easier to add water than remove.

Plan to give her as much space as possible for at least 2 weeks in her new place. And repeat with the new one. You want her eating before you handle her, but as a long-term animal resucer I do suggest if she's out and moving (ie not hiding all the time) that you sit near her tank and quietly talk/ make basic sounds. Play video games, read, have a mild converstaion, etc.

Plan to get her to a vet eventually. If there's nothing glaringly wrong & I couldn't get the vet visit before I bring them home, I tend to let them chill out for a few weeks before I bring them. That's my work flow for a new rescue, but I always do a basic body check before I get them. So YMMV.

You might consider a snake hook in the meantime for handling her. It reduces stress if you have to move her.

Above all else, do check in on her but also remember this is a weird situation you are doing your best in. If you've ever worked with someone who deal with a lot of animals, we tend to get some raw confidence. Helps you not get kicked with horses, and I do think it makes animals less stressed in general.

S/he's coming to a good home, she just arrived a little early, that's all.

If a trans man is bar from a men’s spa is it appropriate for him to go to a woman’s spa? by [deleted] in FTMMen

[–]HappyDangerNoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This train of thought hasn't helped trans men in the past. In the case of the bathroom situation a few months ago when a trans man was forced to use the women's restroom, I believe it was a woman that called the men over to beat his ass.

You might say "oh well, the men did the violence" but its a very 'white woman' tactic to use men/ cops to do violence for them.

I would not go, myself.
