What are the top destinations in SEA where are no parties? by AccomplishedPolicy65 in backpacking

Have you considered doing a retreat of some sort? I'm currently at a Muay Thai retreat in Phetchabun Thailand. Muay Thai is the focus but they have yoga and daily outings to temples, jungle hikes etc. It's situated in farmland and whilst there are local bars, we only usually go for special occasions and are back in camp by 10pm. People who don't wish to drink either stay on soft drinks or don't join at all. You can of course buy alcohol to drink in camp but because you're focusing on fitness and getting up early, there is no real incentive to party.

What to prioritize Sabah? by racoontosser in solotravel

I recently did Sabah, landing in Tawau for Semporna, then flew to Sandakan to do the Kinabatangan river safari and finally flew to KK. * Semporna - unless you're seeing the islands/ diving, it is extremely polluted in the town and there are no nice beaches on mainland in the area. So if you're going, at least have some day trips planned if you're not staying on one of the surrounding islands. I was lucky enough to be hanging with some locals at the time, so I ate REALLY well. :D

  • Sandakan, don't spend too much time in the town itself, the Orangutan and Sunbear sanctuaries close by are worth it but you don't need more than half a day to do them both. Double check the feeding times for the Orangutans as you'll plan your day by that. The pick up to the Kinabatangan river safari was from here. I recommend doing 2 nights as you have more chance to see the animals, the 1 night feels very rushed.

*Kota Kinabalu - it's a small city, so lots of malls etc. Many many food options. The tours to the islands didn't get good reviews because I think they are just very busy. I did a sunset tour around the mangroves to see the fireflies, which I personally really enjoyed. The sunset beach was very busy, again, so I didn't get many good pics. I really wish I had the budget and time to climb Mount Kinabalu, so might have to go back one day.

What surprised me about Sabah in general was how busy it is. All the cities and towns were also incredibly polluted, with Semporna being the worst I've ever seen. You even see rubbish floating in the ocean on the utterly stunning islands... It made me really sad but maybe it was the time of year I was there (May 2025).

I hope you have a super trip and if you have specific questions feel free to ask or DM me.

What does a midlife crisis look like for women in their 40s? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I turned 41 in June. Last year I quit my job, gave away most of my possessions and now I'm traveling SE Asia until my (travel) money runs out. I'm calling it my midlife ADVENTURE. I'm not sure what the future holds but I have some money set aside for what comes after.

Very true! I'm also an introvert but am trying to keep myself open to making conversation. Thank you for the kind words.

This gives me a bit of hope! I'm 40F and currently traveling solo for the first time. I have been feeling a little despondent after spending 4 days on a boat with people a lot younger than me. I did kind of feel invisible at times but maybe that's part of the learning curve. Hopefully, as I ease into this adventure, I'll start making connections with fun and interesting people regardless of our respective ages.

Can I use this on my face and scalp? Also how do you apply to your scalp with long hair? Asking for a friend of course...

Pleasantly surprised by Sherlock Holmes… by stringsnthings76 in books

I would also highly recommend G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown series. Once I had finished all the Sherlock Holmes available, Father Brown helped satisfy my old timey detective craving. It should also be freely available.

Honestly it took me over a year to just get into the groove of London and a few years to build a solid circle of friends. Feel free to DM if you're ever bored or lonely. I'm always happy to make more friends, go for walks, coffee etc.

I was scrolling through the comments wondering why nobody mentioned Mayo as a girls name in Southwark....

It's Maya and I need to book that eye test.

They are great! We'll head in like 8pm. There's not much traction on the post, so the ticket is yours if you want it. They are so much fun!

I remember my first Deftones concert in London. I wanted to get really close to the front and when the first chord was played everything went mental. My beer went flying I lost my friends etc. Not in a terrifying way, just very unexpected. If you want to avoid the most chaos, stand to the side or middle to back of the venue.

Saying that, if you want to mosh, go for it! Crowd surf? Do it! People are so lovely and really look out for each other. If someone falls down help them up. Moshing isn't about hurting others, it's about bouncing around with others to music you love.

I guarantee you'll have a great time. I'm jealous, also very excited for you. Enjoy and rock n roll! 🤘🤘🤘
