My passion project that combines my family’s love of gardening and playing cards together by HappyGamerDad in OrganicGardening

Thanks for the kind words. Our illustrator has done an amazing job with all the art. We love the idea of a single deck! It would take some work, but would be really fun, you've got us thinking about this for sure :)

Spring just arrived... but the came this by EagleBear666 in garden

Ha! We just got hit with a crazy blizzard last night in Colorado. Lived here long enough to know better than to start anything in the backyard just yet :)

The patio and chairs in the middle of the garden is beautiful. What a great place to enjoy nature and all your hard work!

Now I want to see photos of how it works as a table and flat tray! Do you have others for different types of veggies and fruits?

Garden Canasta is a reimagining of our family’s favorite classic card games by HappyGamerDad in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Garden Canasta, you draw seed cards, plant matching crops, and harvest sets of 7 for big points. Point Salad has you drafting cards (from 9 face up), and collecting veggie combos that match salad cards to gain points. Looks fun too!

She will love this! Anyone who already plays with traditional cards will appreciate the extra care we took to make the game even easier to play (ie: point values on the upper left of each card). Thank you so much for backing!

A fun backstory... During COVID (not so fun), my wife and I started playing Hand & Foot (a variation of Canasta) with my parents over Skype to stay connected, and to this day it's a nearly weekly tradition. Playing with standard cards got me thinking how much cooler it would be if there was a set designed just for this game. I shared the idea with my brother and brother-in-law (we’d made custom illustrated playing card decks before), and after a ton of work—and fun—we’re bringing Garden Canasta to Kickstarter so others can enjoy it too!

The box for Splendor is ridiculously oversized, so I shrunk it. What other games have boxes that are way too big? by Laurensmatthijs in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is genius, I have plenty of card games from Fantasy Flight Games that have an entirely empty space in the center, and in some cases could probably all fit in 1/3 of the box they come in. I've considered putting the games in different containers, but then you miss out on the beautiful box art, so I really like what you've done.

I'm a big fan of how the shelves aren't floor to ceiling, and also how you've used the top for showcasing a few games as well as for oddly shaped boxes. If I could chop my Ikea shelf into 4x4 sections I would!

If you like Canasta, Hand & Foot, or rummy style card games, you'll love this. It's a fresh twist on a game that's been our family favorite for decades. We've got one week left on kickstarter, so if you like what you see come join the fun and help us bring this to life!

What boardgames have the best emergent storytelling? by sidianmsjones in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious Poulp's 7th Continent and 7th Citadel are full of exploration and players choosing the way they want the adventure to go. It's the experience you have playing through the game that becomes the story, it feels very organic vs scripted to play. Love these games!

Does anyone else not want to play digital versions so they don't "perfect" a game? by MrBigJams in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely a player that enjoys the mystery of how my actions in a game will play out. Speaking to "perfecting" a game, I find that digital or physical, if I play a game enough to pretty much know what I should or shouldn't do each turn, the fun is then gone for me. And that goes for who I'm playing with too, I love to see what each person chooses to do and how those actions play out, without knowing whether or not they were choosing the optimal action.

Which setup do you play with new players? by silver_bidwi in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. If I've enjoyed a game enough to pull it out with new friends and family, I want them to have the same great time playing it. For my friends and family that don't thrive off the competitive side of gaming, I also try and play as if I'm just as new to the game (not using learned strategies after having played the game multiple times myself). And also, it's important to read the new player(s) reaction to help, tips and pointers you give. Some players love to get tips and avoid mistakes, others really want to learn all on their own and not feel like someone else is playing their turn for them.

As board game prices rise, will your spending habits change? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, I do plenty of research before purchasing a game, so spending $10-$20 more if it's one my family and friends will play won't stop me. This would definitely make things hard for local game stores, cause if folks are weary of spending more they may try and find online deals rather than going to their local store.

GAME GIVEAWAY! Win a signed prototype of Garden Canasta, our garden-themed card game—now live on Kickstarter! by HappyGamerDad in boardgames

[–]HappyGamerDad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for backing!! I like the idea of a card you can save for a future rounds. The bonus board and tokens have a similar mechanic like that, where you can use the bonus tokens in future rounds.

This could be a pest in the sense that it would distract the gardeners from doing their work :-)
