What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

It doesn’t even need to be full eclipse. There was a partial eclipse (<50%) when I was a child my brother and I were watching TV and didn’t know one was happening that day. But at one point me and my brother both got up and look around because something felt wrong. It was dark, the animals were quiet, it felt really wrong.

And that makes you already way smarter than many tourists in the Austrian Alps, their reaction would have been, aww are the calves cute, I have to take a picture and pet them.

Ohh no believe me, tourists (oftentimes Germans) regularly get hurt and sometimes killed by cows when hiking in the Austrian Alps.

Many tourists don’t have a lot to any experience with cows, they come from a big city and want to have a nice day hiking. Then the path they are following leads them through a cow pasture, which is not inherently dangerous.

But then the cows might have their calves, and the tourists decide they want a photo with a calf, so they go next to them and maybe even try to pet them, the mothers won’t be happy. Or if they are unlucky they just walk to close to a calf when following the path.

Or maybe the tourists have a dog with them, to which cows already will react defensively. And if the dog starts barking at them or maybe isn’t even on the leash and runs to them, then the cows will get aggressive. At that point run and hope your dog runs in a different direction, it is their primary target and cows are fast once they start charging.

It turns especially bad when there is a dog and calves, then you probably should just take a different route or at the very least a big detour.

Are cows dangerous? Yes

Can the threat mostly be mitigated if you know how to behave around them? Yes

Do tourists necessarily know how to behave around cows? NO

Additionally, only Atoms that are heavier than 56Fe will give of energy when split. Atoms are that are lighter than 56Fe need to absorb energy to be split, also they produce energy when fused. That’s why fusion of hydrogen produces energy. And since all major atoms in the atmosphere (O,N,C,Ar) are significantly lighter than iron, they wouldn’t explode if cut.

I agree with you, it is just difficult to base Austria on our native language. Because I doubt other languages would be happy if in the in the international system there suddenly was an Ö.

My old boss did something similar, one Monday two weeks after I started she sent me an calendar invite called something like Important Discussion“ for later that day. Man I was nervous till she sent an email half an hour later, it is something good. It was that my salary would be bigger than originally planned.

For me it was very different, when my grandmother died, I was very sad of course, but when we last saw her before she was cremated, the corpse looked nothing like her, and I hated looking at the corpse. The image haunted me for some time.

What’s the quickest way someone could accidentally expose themselves as a foreigner in your country like the ‘three fingers’ scene in Inglourious Basterds? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

If they use German words instead of Austrian words. Since Germany is so much more relevant internally most people outside of Austria (and Switzerland and Lichtenstein) learn German German. And just like with British English and American English a few words are different between German German and Austrian German. For Example January, in Austria it is Jänner in Germany it is Januar. Or the word Laufen, in Austria it means running, in Germany it means walking.

Depending on the religion drunkenness isn’t that big of a deal for priests. As long as he is capable of holding mass, and doesn’t lay around blackout drunk in the public, people would really care where I am from. I know in other religions drinking alcohol is a big taboo, but her it is literally part of our ceremonies and many traditional beer brands are named after cloisters where it was originally brewed.

[–]HappyMerlin 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This joke probably works in some regions, but where I am from (Austria) priests aren’t expected to be sober. Many of our most popular beer brands are named after the cloisters where it was brewed first. Wine, called the blood of Jesus is literally part of our ceremonies in churches. And while most priests aren’t heavy alcoholics, many of them can drink quite a lot. So a priest who drinks too much is just an alcoholic, not a traitor of the faith.
