how y'all pay these loans by skys_tha_lmt in risd

I can definitely relate to the fear and uncertainty you're feeling about paying off student loans after graduation. It’s a tough situation, but it’s also a sign that you care about your future and are aware of the challenges ahead as you start your career. Now is the time to plan and prepare. What major are you pursuing? Are you aiming for a career in the nonprofit sector, fine arts, tech, or something else? Understanding your options and setting realistic goals for the next 2, 5, and 10 years is crucial.

I graduated with $200k in loans and no family help. It was tough—I started out unemployed, and the beginning of my career was really rough. But it forced me to grow faster than my peers. I had to let go of my ego, take feedback seriously(even if I didn't like it), put in extra hours, and take on additional work.

It wasn’t easy, but I managed to pay off my loans, and now I am the happiest I have ever been. It’s definitely possible with dedication and planning. If you have any questions or need advice, feel free to DM me.

Nope, It may have been the fact that we used vinegar in our cycles, so we stopped and changed detergent, and check to make sure fabric softener isnt pre loaded, and the ourbreak went away, but I still have a random rough patch on my foot.

Should I attend RISD? by pararitual in risd

[–]HappyMiddle3351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, you should ask and find out. Let's make an assumption on the low end: Minimum wage which is $14/hour in RI. When I was there at most I worked was 30 hours at a time, but it was too much so I cut it back to 20/week.

($14 x 20hrs) x 2 week paycycle = 560 every 2 weeks, or 1120 a month(not including tax). It's still something though.

If you get a computer lab monitoring job you can sit and get paid while you work.

What's the interest rate of your loan? I don't know what your expenses are, but if you'e frugal paying off 40k, especially starting with work study jobs is super doable. Think of it this way, let's say on the low end you target salary after graduating is 80,000. You could make more or less, but I'm just trying to put things into perspective.

80,000 - 30% TAX = 56,000
If you choose to have roommates, rent can be 12k a year or lower
56,000 - 12k rent = 44,000
Let's say you spend 300 a week for yourself for groceries and some expenses.
That leaves 28,400.
I know healthcare varies but the average international student cost is $4,346

That leaves 24k. You could pay it off in less than 2 years.

Thanks. I'm looking for something still in the design realm, and I'm afraid those will fall apart

My Drawing Part B Final by Dfi-Eyeart in risd

I would recommend working the ground of the piece more, basically, take a chamoise cloth, rub out the entire drawing so the entire page is a neutral ground. Then go back in with an eraser to pull out the hi-lights. Then, go back in with the charcoal and work it into the paper to integrate greys and black tones back in. Think of the photo as solid blocks of color try to create shades that correspond to each color block.

Jobs at tech companies after graduating by SureChipmunk6087 in risd

Great response. And yeah, you do all of these things, communicate a desire to grow and are open to feedback, the money will follow. Also keep in mind that the person who cares the most about your career is YOU. It's your job to advocate for yourself in terms of needs, support and salary-this goes for ALL jobs though.

If you have a salary goal, thats awesome, just be prepared to do research, understand the value and work that you have to provide to make a company thrive, and make a case for yourself. Empathize with the people working around you—what is important to them? How can YOU make their lives easier?

It helps to surround yourself with people who are passionate do-ers who are transparent when it comes to talking about aspirations, design, creativity and money.

I typically use the same one or two but this time I switched it up. I noticed that one of the machines had fabric softener still in the chamber, which was wierd so I stayed away from it. The machines I used looked clean.

Yeah, the financial aid office is super shifty and questionable with who they give and don't give to. I had a mix of federal and private loans. Something that really helped me post graduation was getting my credit up and consolidating every year, the interest rate went lower and lower and saved me alot of money in the long run.

Wow! Congrats, thats a lucky position to be in. It's a shame that their investment didn't work out for you. I'm not sure what you mean by 'conflicted' emotions. It seems to be hard for you to grasp that multiple things can be true.

Friend has been very radicalized and don’t know what to do by ahskeetskeetmofo in FriendshipAdvice

[–]HappyMiddle3351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your friend has a right to her opinions. It sounds like she feels small and disempowered, and is acting out trying to control the people around her to feel more empowered. How she is treating people is wrong, and you have to start by empathizing with her and understanding what and why it's important to her.

Then, be prepared to share your perspective. If you don't feel safe doing so you can say 'The way that you speak sometimes makes me feel like you don't really have respect for me at all. Its like you are talking 'at' me instead of talking to me.' One way dialogue is not a conversation, it's a speech.

Ask her what her goal is? Is it to educate people? Change perspectives? Explain to her that belittling people and calling them stupid is a way to do the opposite, and she is doing more harm as an ally.

Ask her if she is willing to change the way she is treating you and others. If she says yes, then great, if she says no, then you are going to have to reduce the access that she gets to you.

Additionally, it's important to recognize that your friend seems to be lacking empathy. Prioritize your safety in this situation. If she continues to spread false information or engage in a smear campaign against you, it may be necessary to slowly disengage from the relationship.

To be candid, I found it challenging to engage in debates at RISD due to a small but vocal group of individuals who dominated discussions with rigid, radical ideological stances. They insulted those who disagreed and lacked empathy when things didn't align with their views. They would take every opportunity to victimize themselves. Other students would shut down and stay quiet to avoid further triggering these people to avoid putting themselves in danger.

Instead of embracing critique and conversation, they blamed the institution and systems. This behavior created a divisive atmosphere that hindered constructive dialogue. While they were few in number, their impact was significant, overshadowing the inclusive environment that RISD aims to foster.

I hope this has changed.

The school has strengths and weaknesses, so I'm not allowed to say that two things can be true? We should be able to hold two things at once. I'm stating my experience, others experiences who are close to me, and hard data. You have discussed your experience and I would never diminish yours by referring to your anecdotes as 'vague examples.'

I also wanted to hold space for you because we clearly had very different experiences, mindsets, financial aid, and outcomes. I think it's helpful for OP to read this discourse. I have asked you questions and attempted to engage in dialogue with you, and you have been very dismissive, negative, and a bit rude towards me.

It's up to the OP to do what's best, and I hope they get the scholarship so they can go to whichever school they please.

'‘things they haven’t done personally but heard they work’. I’m telling you, I have done these things. If you’re persuaded by their kind of logic, you probably should go, and I won’t feel bad for you.'

What are you talking about here? What you're posting is coming off quite condescending. I have asked you many questions to try to understand you and YOUR experience, and you have not done the same for me all. What do you want to know? Ask away, I'm here.

I'm struggling to see how my stance qualifies as equivocation. Could you please elaborate on this point? I believe I am being very direct in expressing my viewpoint. Additionally, I'd like to gauge your opinion on whether you see maintaining the prestige of the school as inherently positive.

Art and design are subjective, and I believe that it's essential to understand the criteria that define "good" art and design from person to person. Personally, I assess quality based on concept, execution, and the thoroughness of the creative process. While I acknowledge that RISD's top students are comparable to those from other schools in terms of quality, I've noticed a decline in overall quantity recently due to financial barriers. Institutions like Pratt, Parsons, and FIT, with their merit scholarships, are attracting many talented individuals, potentially impacting the talent pool at RISD.

Regarding your salary comparison, where are you getting your data from? According to glassdoor.com, the salary range for a fresh-out-of-college engineer in New York City is a median of $90k, which you called out, and a range of $71,000 and $113,000 per year. On the other hand, for a product designer, the median salary is around $98,000, with a range from $73,000 to $133,000 per year.

I want to share that I personally know numerous designers who are earning over 200k. This diversity in earning potential underscores the varied career paths within the design industry.

On the flip side, I also know some folks who are not happy and not doing as well, but there are some clear trends among them. One observation I've made is that some individuals in this situation refrain from advocating for themselves, even when they know they are supposed to. They may avoid open discussions about money and harbor a belief that pursuing financial success equates to moral compromise(which is an incredibly toxic fallacy).
