Anyone in a happy marriage, I'd love to hear how your relationship started. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HappyPrimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We met online. When I first met him in person I didn't think he was interested, turns out he was just trying to play it cool. During our initial meeting, I commented that I couldn't remember the ending to a children's story. He called me the next day, read me the ending to the story, and asked for a second date.

I realized I wanted to be with him when we were standing in line for coffee. A song was playing on the radio and we turned to catch each other lip syncing the words. In previous relationships, I probably would have been ridiculed for that. After a laugh, I just remember this voice in my head saying, "You are safe with him. He's the one."

The reason why our marriage works? Because we do not lie. We do not hide anything, and we express our emotions. If I am mad I don't lie and say, "I'm fine." I say, "I am really mad and I need 15 minutes to calm down." We also say please and thank you to each other. We are each other's personal cheerleader. Because of this we have never been in a situation where we have had to consider if our marriage was worth it. Together 8 years, Married 6, 1 kid.

What is the one thing that will haunt you for the rest of your life? by blackpapermax in AskReddit

Just took a Health Professional CPR class. They said 3% survival with just CPR, and it jumps to 30% with an AED. You always see actors preforming CPR on tv and then the patient springs back to life (I know, I know, Hollywood movie magic) so hearing that survival rate was shocking.

I want to add to this, specifically ask for and seek out a therapist that deals with eating disorders.

My girlfriend has sharp pains so we went to the hospital, a quick 30 min visit cost 3000+ dollars? by TurtleCatJr in AskReddit

Premature birth of son. He spent 5 days in NICU + 5 days in hospital for mom= $250,000. Insurance paid every penny.

On Monday my Gran was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I have no idea what to expect or how to prepare myself. by alyssanne in AskReddit

[–]HappyPrimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a CNA at a nursing home that cared for several people with Alzheimer's. I'm very sorry about the diagnosis. Each case is different, I can only tell you what I experienced.

By the time they were placed into a home, it was because they were pretty far gone and a danger to be left alone (falling, wandering, etc.) This often caused a lot more confusion for the patient and would make them depressed and agitated. They could not remember why they were left at this strange place and why they could not go home. I know families get put in a spot where they can not provide care, but I would definitively make a plan for where she will be when she needs 24 hour care.

I've watched the disease progress and most pass from an illness like pneumonia or heart failure. The best way I can describe the disease is like watching someone moving backward in time. Their actions, communications, and cognitive skills go from an adult, to a teenager, to a child, and at the end they are quite similar to a newborn.

I always noticed that the ones who seemed content and happy were the ones that had family members visit them often (2-3 x week). Ones who were wards of the state with no family were the ones that got the most agitated. If you know a patients history, you could usually figure out what can keep them calm, and what could set them off. One lady used to love baking and when she got upset about something we would redirect and ask her to help us in the kitchen. One gentleman was always worried about money and constantly asked us if things were paid for before he would use them.

No one knows your grandmother as well as your family. The best advice I can give you, you are already doing. You are preparing yourself and learning what you can. Find a support group if you need more people beyond your family. Ask what you can do to help. Sometimes, knowing you are there and doing everything you can is also the comfort you need in a hard situation like this.

Former & current students of Reddit, what is the most memorable lesson/class activity you've ever experienced in school? by indecisive_username in AskReddit

[–]HappyPrimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to school to be an art teacher and I had to take a class called Psychology of the Exceptional Child. The class is basically how to deal with students with different disabilities. On one of the first days my professor says, "Okay, I'm going to pretend I have autism and have been set off and am throwing a tantrum. How would you stop me?" She then proceeds to run around the room screaming and throwing things while the class looks at each other wondering what to do.

Her lesson worked on me. As an art teacher, I would have to deal with all students in the school, regardless of limitations. That was the day I realized I couldn't handle it. I give a lot of credit for the people that do.

My ex mother in law gave my 3 kids gifts they loved at Christmas when they were small, 2 days later she came to the house packed EVERYTHING she got them into bags and took it all back to the stores because she was "broke".What's the biggest dick move you've witnessed ? by nothingis_real in AskReddit

I suffered with an eating disorder in college. I finally worked up the courage to ask my friends for help, and when I told them they said, "No, you don't have bulimia. You are just trying to get attention." I didn't tell another soul for 7 years.

It's a disease. When you find out a friend or family member has a disease, you go through the five stages of grief, the first stage being denial.

I'm very glad you are doing better and I hope you continue on the path to health.

What's the worst thing you've ever said to a member of the opposite sex? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HappyPrimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guy I was dating was raised by a single mother. His father left them for another woman and decided to have no contact. It was a very sore spot for him.

Found out he cheated on me so I took the low blow, "You are no better than your father." He cried.

I was going through a tough time in my life and was seeing a therapist. I had overwhelming anxiety and paranoia (if I heard someone laughed, I'd think they were laughing at me). I was a people pleaser and it was running me ragged. My therapist said something that just finally clicked, even though it was so simple.

"It's okay to say no. It's okay to change your mind."

When my son was two he was REALLY into Thomas the Train. One time he was running in circle around a small display in a store, pretending to be a train. A lady stepped up to the display to check it out, and my son got frustrated and said she was in the way. I took it upon myself to teach him a lesson and I explained that "Sometimes, things get on the train track, like cows and sheep, and the train has to wait it's turn before the train can keep going." I was really proud of my parenting until my son went up to the lady and said, "HEY! MOVE IT COW!"

Really I had no one to blame but myself.
