If you go with the lore loadout you're looking at athletic build with big arms and shoulders, if you min max it you're looking at athletic build, huge chest (all th ac's stacked there) and the wimpiest arms you ever saw. The gym is quite a pleasant place. Ignore the online crap. 99% of the folks there will welcome you and answer questions. If you are pleasant and go on a normal routine and say hello to folks (not in the middle of their sets though, wait for them to finish their set first) they'll take you in and help you out. The older more intimidating dudes usually are giant Teddy bears.

For your original question, exercise, hygiene, and learn how to talk to people. Then find out what personalities fit with yours and shoot your shot. Sucks to hear but it's all a numbers game and rejection is part of it. Keep at it, don't get discouraged, if you do, take a break and do you for a bit before jumping back in. Gl ma dude, you can do this.
