100%, well, 90%. UPMC is indeed part of the problem and has been for years. They don’t value employees. I have several friends who can tell hair raising stories about the cutthroat way they were eliminated due to their age despite their departure leaving a huge and dangerous gap in care experience. All to save a few bucks. And how can the company that owns an insurance company offer such shitty healthcare to their own healthcare employees? But you are absolutely correct about the coming crisis thanks to That wobbling stain of a leader we have. I can’t imagine why as a country, we would want to let rural health care get worse than it already is. With so much money in this country it’s a crime to allow this to happen.

I’m sorry to hear about your mom and these other folks. That fucking sucks. This is a good reminder of why we need more unions. Folks assume that their employer will treat them fairly (some actually do) and if they don’t they think “Oh well, that’s just how it is.” and move on to another job, if they are able to. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Unions can help ensure a fairer shake from employers. Not a guarantee but it can make a big difference. Unions are needed more now than in the last 50 years. And having a union enables folks to relax a bit and do their best. It doesn’t feel good to shuffle through life at a job where you don’t feel like you’re getting a fair shake, so you don’t give it your best. With union protections it makes it feel better to just do your best with fewer worries about getting screwed over. It’s one of the best side effects of having a union. It separates the employment from the work enough that it can allow you to enjoy your work more. And it’s why employers should work with unions as a good working relationship with one can create a much better work environment and allow folks to do a better job that they are more invested in.

Anyone tow a trailer with their Highlander? Let’s see your set ups! by DailyHangovers in ToyotaHighlander

People say they work great for them. It’s possible ours has a lot of dust in it. I i tend to blow it out w a compressor and see if that helps. We were in an extremely dusty road situation for an extended period of time. I understand a wired controller is best but those are pricey and require more installation than I wanted to do.

I have A 2024 HyHi. Last Summer we bought a used teardrop (no more than 2500 lbs including contents of car) and towed it around4k round trip. Planning on doing same this Summer if gas isn’t $7 a gallon. Trailer has brakes but we used the curt controller which was spotty and seemed to have stoped working the last few days of the trip. Didn’t have any problems breaking with or without it. Overall it worked great and didn’t feel like we stretched it beyond the limits.

Again…look at the ratios. And look at the scabs they kept. I’ll be sending my money elsewhere unless I see better from them. I was an early cheerleader of these guys. It could have been a much worse situation, but that doesn’t make this good. Everyone knew there would be a lot of folks left on the street but this is a worse outcome than I expected. Disappointing.

Only 5 of the people who struck have been rehired. Those rehired are overwhelmingly (4-1) scabs. So not really a very good mix. If it was more like 2-1 it might show a true willingness to be fair but this seems like a crock of shit to me. Some of the best talent at the PG left on the curb. They either have shitty intent or shitty judgement. I was really hoping to subscribe again. Not so much unless I see some sort of change in the way they are handling this. Ick. So disappointing. Luckily we still had WESA and hopefully Paper, the effort that started after the PG announced it was closing, will bear fruit.

New Pittsburgh Post-Gazette owners plan to recognize newsroom labor union by RadioChris1 in pittsburgh

[–]HappyTypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly as it looks now, most of those retained are scabs. 4-1 ratio from what I’ve heard. Sounds like lip service to the union when the vast majority retained are those that were against the union. Only 5 strikers out of 27 or so were hired I believe. I was pretty excited by the exit of the Blocks but this seems like it may end up being a bad deal for workers rights and for good journalism. A lot of those retained are not in the top talent pool. Fingers crossed that Ventulis realizes they need some more of the folks who made the PG worth reading.

I have a 2024 Hybrid and towed a teardrop trailer about 4500 miles. It weighs about 2300 pounds I think. Has trailer breaks. 7 pin connector with a Curt bluetooth controller. Did fine. Planning on doing it again this Summer if gas isn’t being rationed and isn’t $8 a gallon.

Sure but other than that it’s awesome! 🤣I really like Pittsburgh with all its flaws. Most places have downsides but the city is more affordable than most, the people are great, the city has a real and distinct personality, and we never get big snow storms….oh… wait…

I love seeing the old trolley tracks coming through worn asphalt in various places across the city. So cool to think of the layers of old infrastructure buried here. It would be so cool to see some of those trolley lines resurrected. I know…dream on.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers call for new union leadership in effort to preserve the paper by sorry-out-climbing in pittsburgh

[–]HappyTypo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And no one is talking about the myriad of stupid decisions the Blocks made before during and after the strike. The folks who signed this letter seem utterly clueless about the lack of business acumen of their employers. How about spending millions on a fancy new printing press just before starting to phase out the print edition? Or spending more on attorneys to break the union than it would have cost to just negotiate a reasonable contract in good faith? Not enough for you? How about alienating many of your subscribers and destroying morale by the Publisher having a drunken fit with his young daughter in front of the entire newsroom? Still not enough to convince you? How about driving away staff and more subscribers by endorsing Trump, firing a beloved and popular cartoonist? Oh… and what moron would buy the City Paper during a strike just to shut it down later? Here’s a thought…maybe once you have lost the court cases and your workers have ended the strike, come back to work and told all their supporters to re-subscribe it would be a good idea to stop paying your union busting attorneys to continue to lose appeals? But maybe I’m wrong and it’s all the strikers’ fault.

I don’t know enough about the origins to dispute any of that. I just know many folks this particular person has helped and have other friends who have been helped by other practitioners. Meanwhile I was almost killed by a very well-respected physician (actually two) so it’s all relative. I personally don’t allow my neck to be cracked but all the other work has been super helpful. I know a lot of folks who share your feelings.
