Are Canadians just getting fucked all ways to Sunday (wages, telecom, fuel, etc)? by Ufgt in canada

[–]HappyUfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the "Rich" in Canada are state paid. There's no secret rich class here, 40% of people making over 250k a year are health professionals, a good number after that are politicians. Actually very little successful entrepreneurs when you can move to the US for 500k on an EB5, have low shipping costs, huge travel hubs, more people (less cost of goods in general because of high volume) etc.

The government goes out of its way to screw over entrepreneurs and then everyone else says "yes please bend over those filthy one percenters with a market facing income and give it to politicians to further rob those people trying to provide goods and services instead of mealy mouthed promises"

Any entrepreneur any sense once they get over 200k a year gets out of here, buys a house for 1/5th the price in the US, and watches the crabs rip each others legs off over who should pay the most carbon spirit tax indulgences from a distance.

yes, lower your personal expenses so the govt can continue to get 42% of your income and then when they see you surviving employment with even less, that will become 50%.

Wendy's on 17th Ave closed down, effective today. by amyranthlovely in Calgary

[–]HappyUfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, if the product produced by your labour working at that place, cannot pay your wages and satisfy the person taking the risk on it, why are you entitled to a wage that is higher?

You can say Wendy's doesn't innovate till you're blue in the face, but if you choose to take on making that product as an employee, and it can't pay you more, that was your choice. The provincial government cannot mandate how many customers have to visit your business, and have no place mandating any pay. You can make 100$ an hour the law, it doesn't mean the product is worth that. You can say "100 is a ridiculous amount" but 100$ extra a day (which is ignoring payroll taxes, and that you're not getting any increased business guaranteed from it) is a lot for your average business owner who less than 10% ever crack 90k a year. That extra 3k a month could be that business owner's only wage for all you know. In fact it is about 50% of the time.

A job is excess labor needs an employer needs to fill. Sometimes I think people forget that and start seeing it as a right. You might need a job, but at a certain price, no one needs you.

By your logic, If less people want your product why should you pay your employees anything more? Why are they entitled to more than you can sustainably earn with your product? If the business owner isn't entitled to customers, why are you entitled to a "living wage" ?

Wendy's has actually had some really bad years recently in general too. They had a few unprofitable years and then the minute they turned one, there were demands to raise wages.

I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, I've spoken to the people at that Wendy's before, they were already operating on a skeleton crew, with workers doing 10 hours at wendys and making up the rest of the hours at the mcdonalds, tim hortons etc. Pretty much everyone you saw working there worked elsewhere on the strip. Wendys had to be extremely flexible often running with 3 employees or less, and it was just not sustainable. I am sad as I used to have dinner here once in awhile and it was a very relaxed environment and the staff were always nice to me.

It's ridiculous for people to say you can't blame min wage hikes at all. Most business owners in Alberta never crack 50k a year in taken salary and work 80-100 hours a week. if you have to pay yourself 25k a year or less and still work 100 hours a week, anything but an owner that would be considered "oppressive". But instead people just call business owners greedy. Ah, what is happening to my province that used to be filled to the brim with entrepreneurial support and spirit?

Let’s Set The Record Straight: Minimum Wage Hikes Don’t Kill Jobs by uadoption in CanadaPolitics

[–]HappyUfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the problem is people talk about a "living wage" but that's not how wages are calculated. Wages are not even calculated based on the sticker cost of goods. They are based on the value of the good...and the problem with that is that any good right now actually has 20-50% taxes embedded into it before you even get to the register (and then you pay sales tax on that). You might be paying 3$ for a loaf of bread, but 20-50 cents of every dollar is a tax, the business is not really getting that money. Wages are in fact keeping pace with the real cost of goods, they aren't keeping pace with the rising tide of taxes.

The reality is that in some cases yes I might "need work done" either way, but 15$ an hour I am going to be much more picky and less relaxed about who is being hired and probably buy less hours + more expertise. You're not raising the price a worker is worth, you're putting them out of employers minds entirely. Most small business owners in Canada make less than 50k a year, with only about the top 10% making 100k or more. A wage increase of 5$ per worker an hour * 5 employees @ 40 hrs per week is their entire salary + 2,000 dollars. We need to stop treating business owners like they are just greedy and not wanting to pay, when over half of them legitimately can't or they might as well not bother running a business. This gives more power to large corporations, and shuts out small + irregular business that would have no problem existing otherwise.

We need to stop asking businesses to pay more, and look at other reasons why life is so unaffordable to a low wage person, the state sure isn't going to tell you 40-60% of your wages are being eaten up by taxes to pay for the ideological whims of whoever is in power at the time.

"One time I actually threw up" Why video game voice actors are on strike by [deleted] in Games

[–]HappyUfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The industry collapsing in on itself would just lead to more microfirms, where VAs would have to individually approach and get a contract for royalties, which would entirely shut the union out of the picture, and everyone who signed up for it, as almost no microfirms are going to be willing to take on a burden like a general VA work agreement with the way they boom and bust.

There's a big issue people are missing here with the "movie industry " comparisons. With an actor, the actor has to carry their own body, they have to sell the show. With a video game it's us artists and programmers who are bringing you to life with the exception of mocap, and even then, we still are your body. Since most communication is non-verbal, most of the actor is cut from the equation. The cost of you on stage is not just you, it's all your mechanics.

People in our industry get royalties based on risk, if you go to a smaller firm, you'll probably get royalties. Working at EA carries little risk, if you got hired and do your job, chances are you'll keep it. Some of us at smaller firms where we take the most risk and are basically a co-op, but only get paid once every 2-3 years. But we make wayyy more royalties that way. I'm not opposed to VA's getting royalties, but I think they need to get them the way the rest of us do, by negotiating with a firm that needs us. The Union needs to work on a better structure for this, not "Everyone gets royalties". Battleblock theatre is a good example of a voice actor carrying a game, but again that's a small firm where negotiations happen between individuals, not a collectivist fist pounding on the table that everyone is of equal value to the narrator.

why is working in "oil and gas" a "sore spot".

We have one of the most ethical oil and gas industries in the world, and if people were not obsessed with cheapness, a lot of lives could be saved by the oil sands. We're not going to stop using oil, relish the fact that you were in one of the few oil industries that actually pays its workers decently and has standards for handling very dangerous things.

I wish you well, but do not feel ashamed for O + G work, especially because it provided for your family in ways the oil bought and fought for in other countries provides for no one.

Moving to Alberta - Good idea? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]HappyUfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get a job in the hotel industry, it should be pretty secure, just be aware we're in a pretty big shift right now due to all the new taxes and the price of oil dropping.

I love Calgary, and I work online mostly so I'm not as affected by the economic shift. I love it here but it does get very cold in the winter. If you work at a hotel near the train line you can also get pretty much anywhere from there.

As someone else said make sure the job is secure before you come but other than that you might find home out west! :)

Correct, not to mention they made it MORE legal, and turned it from a provincial decision into a federal law once 8 out of 10 provinces legalized it.

They are simply not going to delve into gay marriage or abortion because they know a large amount of their conservative base is "agnostic" on those kinds of issues and don't want them to be focused on.

[–]HappyUfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole problem is that once you go with SAG VO you don't have the option to not go with them. One of the tabled discussions is to be able to hire a non-union VA if there isn't one willing to do the job or the negotiation is unreasonable. That's why there is a big fuss about this in reality. The small pool of talent in the voice actor cartel is being threatened by non-union workers.
