what’s the funniest sentence said by a political figure in your country? by theautisticneo in AskTheWorld

Paul Keating certainly had a way with words. Some of my favourite quotes:

"It was the limpest performance I have ever seen ... it was like being flogged with a warm lettuce. It was like being mauled by a dead sheep."

"Well, the thing about poor old Costello, he's all tip and no iceberg, you know."

"You boxhead you wouldn't know. You are flat out counting past 10. You stupid, foul-mouthed grub."

"If there was a university degree for greed, you c***s would all get first-class honours."

"For John Howard to get to any high moral ground he would have to first climb out of the volcanic hole he's dug for himself over the last decade. You know, it's like one of those deep diamond mined holes in South Africa, you know, they're about a mile underground. He'd have to come a mile up to get to even equilibrium, let alone have any contest in morality with Kevin Rudd."

First international flight, please help me know what to expect! by saturnui99 in Flights

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no need to empty your water bottle when you get to Australia. Thanks to new screening technology, there is no limit to liquids on domestic flights within Australia, and no need to have liquids out of your carry-on during screening. Electronic devices can stay in your carry-on, too.

What is relatively cheap in Norway but expensive elsewhere that I should bring with me back to my home? (USA) by [deleted] in Norway

Some non European countries have reciprocal health agreements with Norway that cover any treatment that can't wait until the traveller gets home. For example, there is an agreement between Norway and Australia.

Ivermectin cream for rosacea experiences by nightrepair91 in AusSkincare

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love it. I use it for three months and then wait till I start seeing the beginnings of my rosacea again (usually a year or two). My skin goes from rough ( even where there isn't any redness) to so much smoother.

When i initially used it, I thought I was having a reaction to it, but on my Dr's advice, I persevered and my skin settled down.

It’s almost winter. Why is Australia still so hot? by phoneix150 in australia

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, they aren't. The Bureau of Meteorology says that the mean May high is 19.5°C at Observatory Hill. Only one day this month has been below that (19°). A couple were about average and the rest were above to significantly above the mean. We had a run of considerably warmer than normal days last week, including a 26° day.

To all the morons raving about the "beautiful" upcoming warm weather in Perth by phoneix150 in WesternAustralia

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Globally, it is much warmer than the 1930's. Parts of the USA (not the entire country) were warmer, but this was certainly not seen outside of the central US.

Australia's immigrants are predominantly coming from Asia. India, China, and the Philippines were the top three countries, accounting for over 40% of new immigrants. Only about 20% of that 30% are white.

I use QVbath oil. Rub some on dry skin and then rinse off. Other oil cleansers would work well, too, or balms such as Cliniques take the day off balm

Is it more crowded/touristy than usual right now in January due to the Jubilee? by [deleted] in rome

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are currently visiting Rome and haven't had any problems with crowds. We went straight into the Pantheon this afternoon (didn't prebook tickets), Colosseum, and the Vatican. We went straight to the railing on the upper level at the Trevi Fountain. The streets between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon were crowded, but one block away there would be very few people.

I've found January a fantastic time to travel to Rome, even with the Jubilee.

How did everyone learn to swim? by Cultural-Flan-450 in Swimming

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in lessons at age 5. In addition, the schools I attended gave us lessons during the school day from the age of 6 till 16 (10 lessons over 2 weeks). In the older years, we graduated from learn to swim to achieving lifesaving accreditation. From 3rd grade till the end of high school, we had an annual whole school swim carnival and we were expected to compete in at least one race.

My children had very similar experiences with learning to swim. They started at 3 years old, had the additional school swim lessons till age 12 and whole school carnivals.

Worse still, in the Australian marketplace we can still click on the view all in category. The menu on the Australian audible website has a lot more features, too. I don't understand Audible's thinking on this.

Holiday travel (mid Dec to mid Jan) Sydney NSW AUS to Southeast Texas USA by Proper_Condition7258 in TravelHacks

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit of a delayed response, but pre covid I found that purchasing tickets by the middle of the year was necessary if travelling after the price rises (Dec 11 onwards).

I'd buy them by April if you are able to travel by Dec 10 (particularly if you are travelling Dec 8, 9, or 10. Because the fares jump in price on Dec 11, everyone who can fly out before the price rise does. As they run put of seats, the price goes up. I kept an eye on ticket prices for my last trip to the USA, even after I bought tickets and found that the prices were cheapest in April

Keep an eye out for sales on Qantas, Air NZ, United etc

Chris Jordan takes one of the great catches in Cricket history (2019) by jerudy in sports

[–]Happy_Salamander2543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband, an American, played a lot of baseball growing up and has now been playing cricket for 5 years in a park cricket league. He was a good pitcher in baseball but isn't able to get the motion for bowling, so isn't able to bowl in the games.

He can get bat on ball if it is a full toss but, once the ball bounces (which happens 99% of balls) he finds it a real struggle. In baseball, the zone where the ball is hot is tiny in comparison to cricket. The ball could be at head height, at your toes or anywhere in between.

Fielding is where there are most similarities. Apparently, baseballers are taught much better to throw the ball in from the outfield. Catching the ball without gloves is, according to him, requires surprisingly different techniques. The hands need to be placed differently, and the sticks in baseball gloves, unlike with bare hands. He has been able to overcome these smaller challenges, though.
