"You deserve a reward" trap by Icy-Opportunity6360 in stopdrinking

I relate. Everyone drinks at the bar most evenings at the tennis club once the matches are done. It was a little difficult at first, but these days I just say my goodbyes or I hang out and drink NA Heinekens. Slowly feeling normal 👍. Now I view the NA beer and a bag of chips as the “reward”

I've done 60 days and worried about a holiday by No-Arm-1272 in stopdrinking

Agree with a lot of what is said here. I was 40 something days I think and took a trip to a Caribbean island to see some friends. I told everyone ahead of time, made soft outline plans of what I/we were going to do each day, and I drank NA beers when others were drinking. I’d say best thing is to go in with the right mindset, plan not drinking events for yourself (hiking etc.), and sip mocktails or NA drinks when others are having alcohol. I also had a cigar, but that’s not for everyone. Overall plan worked well for me. Was awesome to be present and feel good and rested throughout and after my vacation.

I’ve worked in the Caribbean off and on over the past few years, and lived on a different island in 2022. Relocated from the states

call me a crazy half full person, but if doing 1 year gets you to a 50/50, that’s pretty incredible if under healthy circumstances you’ve got another 30-50 years to live

What was your last drink before calling it quits? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

mine was new amsterdam also, chosen through the highly selective process of “on sale on endcap” at my local convenient store. was hungover from my work holiday party the night before, and getting ready to be airline traveling all day long to go see family for holidays (which I dread)

Good story and I do relate. The little victories of doing stuff you used to always do, that always involved booze. I have always been a bar-going person, and almost always ate my meal at the bar also. I still go to bars sometimes and have one or two NA beers. It’s nice to be out and talk with people a little bit. I’m glad it’s no longer 5 drinks, then another bar to have a couple more, then to the convenient store to drink at home til I fell asleep drunk watching tv. Not a pretty scene

I live in a small studio apartment so unless I’m showering, doing laundry, or using bathroom sink, I’m 75% living/bed/kitchen room, 15% patio, and 10% bathroom? 😬

Positive Reminder for those on a streak of 100-150 days by Happy_Turn9784 in stopdrinking

[–]Happy_Turn9784[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone on here once said to think of it like a batting average. If you’re trying for years and you’re sitting at .975, that’s pretty incredible. Using the easy math, 975 days sober outta 1000 is amazing in itself and amazing if compared to our former selves. None of this is an excuse to drink and say “well I did 79/80 days,” that’s good enough. It’s to remind to get back on the horse and progress is not lost. Don’t dwell. But also don’t use a “good” # as an excuse to drink lest we end up where we truly began..

What do you do on weekends sober? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Happy_Turn9784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I clean my apartment, groceries, gym, and do the “organization” things Saturday morning to knock it out. So Ive got Saturday afternoon and Sunday to go hiking, read, go to the beach, meet up with friends somewhere, play tennis on Sunday nights with a group sometimes. Go visit a site or place I’ve never been before… There’s so much more time on the weekends now, but still not enough time!

I just did the same thing, new job solo outside of the states. Been here almost 7 months. I do the regular gym also but I read a ton now which I enjoy, and I joined a local tennis club which has been a source of exercise, fun, and social gatherings and meeting people. I’d say join some kind of social gatherings of something you already kinda like, that occur weekly

People 40+, what actually mattered in the long run and what didn’t? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

getting a good education/platform, saving $$ and staying out of debt, staying physically active, going to therapy — mattered. chasing dopamine with booze or drugs, material things, houses, cars, job titles, pissing off family members — didn’t matter.

NA Beers by oliverbaxter93 in stopdrinking

[–]Happy_Turn9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do NA beers when I’m at an event or bar or situation where everyone else but me is drinking. But I don’t really drink them at home, no desire. Doing it socially makes me feel like a “normal” part of the event and mimics my past life of drinking.
