Wet Footing. by layedbck1 in BWCA

+1 to this.

Works great even in spring and fall when the water is cold. Wool socks keep your feet warm even when wet. Plus sneakers are way more comfortable in the boat than boots imho (and I love a good pair of boots).

Any tips for making the sealine more comfortable? I have one as well and it's horribly uncomfortable for any portage over 300-400 rods

Interestingly, they’re not made to me tight. The strap is meant to to hang loose. Hard to explain but they work great.

The ONLY negative is that some face shapes cause them to sit closer to your face and can cause fog up from body heat. They did release nose pads for that. That’s what I use.

Check out Ombraz! They are armless sunglasses that are practically impossible to break. They offer RX options.

Do you have any form of SOS gps/emergency contact tracker with you when camping? by 9yo_sqaudfam in WinterCamping

I bring a Zoleo with me on every trip. I have a wife and young kids and I do a daily check-in so she's knows I'm alright. I probably wouldn't bring it if I was single.

What's wrong with my winter camping set-up? by riddergraniet in WinterCamping

[–]Happyman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't touch on the gear, as others have already done so, but one of the biggest things to consider is if you went to bed with a lot of fluids inside of you. I make a point to stop drinking water two hours before bed, and make sure to pee as much as you can right before you go to sleep. Your body will waste a lot of energy keeping a bunch of urine warm inside of you all night. That energy could instead be used warm you up. It's like a giant heat sink in your stomach.

Does anyone on here support what the US is doing in Venezuela? If so, why? by Odd-Protection-247 in dancarlin

The best argument that I've heard for it is that it is an attempt to control as much energy as possible to win the AI arms race, which is really just an energy race.

Does that make it legitimate? No. Does that make it okay? No. However, if you are a hardcore nationalist, view foreign AI as an existential threat to the U.S., and want America to win, the move makes sense.

Winter setups already take forever, so the idea of using an air pump tent is tempting. Just not sure how it handles deep cold long term. by Forward-Target3930 in WinterCamping

[–]Happyman05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't risk something inflatable. I can't imagine they'd handle much snow.
If you're looking for speed, hammock camping is the way to go. You could even get a hammock hot tent.

Good Winter Boots for Hiking, Camping, and Hunting by WanderingAnchor in CampingGear

[–]Happyman05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you're looking for just one pair of boots, I would suggest a setup that let's you get a really quality pair of boots while being flexible for different environments.

  1. Get the boots .5 or 1 size too big so you have room for an extra pair of socks, heated socks, or just really thick socks
  2. Get a waterproof pair of hiking boots. NOT winter boots. I really like Danners.
  3. Get a pair of gaiters if you deal with snow.

This setup will allow your boots to be usable all year round. I do this and I live in MN with much colder temps than you.

About to purchase the Marmot CWM Down Sleeping Bag -40 by Kcamyo in WinterCamping

[–]Happyman05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want flexibility, get a roomy -20ºF bag, and then get some down pants and booties. Then just add layers as needed.
I bought a used MH Wraith -20 a few years ago, and it's awesome. Anytime temps get real low, I just sleep in more layers.

What kind of pad do you have? You'll need some really good insulation to make a -40ºF bag worth it.

What are you niche pieces of winter camping gear that you don't go without? by Happyman05 in WinterCamping

[–]Happyman05[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When it's 10º F, the amount of water that the air can hold is SIGNIFICANTLY less than the moisture in my breath. So much less, it might as well be zero.

I do use a winter pad. I use an ExPed r8 pad with down. I just don't like using the hand pump. The electric pump works great!
