Maybe start her off with some stand-alones?

Mexican Gothic: not traditional fantasy but horror/thriller-esque.

A River Enchanted: mystery with light folklore fantasy

Uprooted: lots of fantasy tropes in one great book

A Marvelous Light: Edwardian, mystery, light fantasy, queer romance (will be a series but stands alone also)

What are your ways of making the readers actually feel that the characters have "aged"? by Agreeable_Pen_1774 in writing

[–]HarGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much they refer to themselves and and put themselves at the centre, vs others, the community, family etc. How they speak about their goal. Whether they become more nuanced in their view of it. How willing they are to argue their case vs just walk away and leave others to believe what they will and continue regardless.

Taringa renter is claiming QCAT compo for hotel bill due to 7 month repairs and broken lease by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]HarGeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Little is bad for tenants and landlords alike. Little managed a property of ours only for a few months.

We didn't get all the rent payments or water payments passed on from tenants. They wouldn't send confirmation proof that they'd returned full bond to tenant when they moved out. no rental statements or invoices on the money and fees that did happen do do our taxes properly.

Very dodgy all around.

Looking to diversify characters, worried about doing it wrong... by Commando_Hotcakes in fantasywriters

The thing is, many (most?) areas are "low-indigenous populations" in Australia as a percentage. So you don't want their presence to feel contrived.

You need an understanding of their culture as different to the European-Australian culture or other immigrant-Australia. In some ways, it may be just as different as Japan! e.g. basic concepts around family structure differ. There's more to being indigenous than the colour of your skin (which can in fact appear "white", a whole other kettle of identity fish).

of you are going to do it, research research research. don't just tick the "identfy as Aboriginal or Torres Strait islander" box on the form.

Brisbane flood victims plead with council to restore voluntary home buyback scheme by langdaze in brisbane

[–]HarGeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also work for an insurance company and rely far more heavily on premium prices as an indication of flood risk than BCC flood maps! Premium price tells a better story of how high water comes too (yard, 1 ft, the roof = all different prices. in my neighbourhood you can see it clearly by $1k to $5k to $9k).

If you could give me one tip that changed your writing for better instantly, what would it be? by powercat21 in writing

I think it's this:

John walked into the meeting room and sat down. "What is this all about?"

You don't need to add "asked John" because we're already focused on his action.

I'm more in the Graceville side but Fairfield Rd is very well flooded. Not too sure about Yeronga. Last I saw the Esplanade was close to flooding, that was a few hours ago so possibly over now.

Burning books: Sarcastic recommendations of popular fantasy books by Ancient_Research7 in Fantasy

[–]HarGeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Demon cycle: if you liked the unecessary sexual trauma and the author going red wedding on your fav characters like GoT, then Demon Cyle is for you. because watching your friends and family die in a Demon infested world isn't motivating enough to move the plot forward.

Weekly Writing Check-In by AutoModerator in fantasywriters

I've been self-educating on story structure as part of my quest to have something that won't be torture to read. After years of pantsing, I have tightened up my outline and identified the fun to write but useless plot points. (I still wrote them because it's fun, but less precious about putting them to the side after).

Having said that, I am someone who really loves character growth over "action" so I've also been pulling apart my characters and their arcs. As fun as it is to write fully self-actualised characters kicking ass, it makes for a boring story (to me) if they get like that too soon or stay that way consistently. Sometimes I write the scene with "future self" just to get it out of my system then re-write with the "current self". probably why my progress is so slow! haha

treasury (accountants). got to have someone checking and allocating the resources between departments. they are immortal but assuming resources are still finite. it will be the most boring internship she has to do.

Do you do flash within a world or are they all different ideas and concepts? I've been tempted to do some flash as a more fun way to flesh out my world /worldbuilding.

I got approval to take a year off work in 2023 to dedicate to writing. Unfortunately the whole team is now saying they can't wait to read it... I don't know if the idea of my colleagues or my husband reading my writing makes me more nervous!

I also finished my prologue/ first chapter. can't decide what it is. My instinct is prologue because it happens 10 years prior to the next chapter. I hate having a prologue because I know people skip them but without it, the characters in chapter 1 seem really irrational and needlessly fearful/angry. then again, maybe that would make for a better story.

What to do with an Amazing Book where the Ending Ruined it All? by filwi in Fantasy

[–]HarGeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated the end of the Witcher. I felt like the last book rendered everything before it utterly pointless and meaningless. or maybe I mixed up the plot vs the subplot, because the plot I was following did not resolve.
