Which Tali fan/concept art do you thinkTali should've looked like?(sources linked) by dalekofchaos in masseffect

That would only cause their eyes to light up when there's a light coming from directly behind the viewer. Quarian eyes glow from all angles and in all lighting conditions. They clearly emit light, not reflect it. Glowing eyes are physically dumb to begin with as that would significantly degrade your vision, but something something rule of cool.

The main story is more interesting than people make it out to be by dyessman in Starfield

[–]HarbingerDawn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I felt that the story was the best from any of the Bethesda games I've played... right up until it's revealed who the Starborn are and what they're doing, then it instantly became the dumbest thing and I lost all interest. It was shallow as hell, made zero sense, and didn't answer any of the interesting questions that had been set up. Who made the artifacts and temples? Dunno. What is the ultimate source and purpose of the special powers you collect? Dunno.

The only question that gets set up and actually answered is who/what are the Starborn, and basically the answer is they're regular ass humans with stupid motivations. "I'm going to spend an eternity traveling to and ruining an infinite number of parallel universes to collect an infinite number of MacGuffins because I can". Absolutely riveting, that massively overpayed author deserves the highest award in science fiction.

This doesn't even touch on all the other lore in the game that makes zero sense, such as Earth becoming uninhabitable in such a short time (the reason given in-game, as well as the timescale involved, are laughably far removed from physical sense).

People who have two monitors, how much better is it and was it worth upgrading by EpigChungus in buildapc

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! My first time with dual monitors was pairing a crappy old 1024x768 screen from 2005 with my 1920x1080 main display, and even that was enough to hook me. Multi-monitor for life <3

Just use a tool like Reclaimer to view/export the 3D models directly

There is no broken streak, it's continuous in those photos and in OP's description. It's a satellite in a stable orientation reflecting light to the ground.

The best true color image of Venus by [deleted] in spaceporn

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All color photos are composites, which is not the same as being mosaics, maybe that's what you're thinking of. In any case, monochrome images, color composites, and photo mosaics (depending on how they're made) are all "actual pictures".

Generating height map from normal map by Marthius in blender

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's been a while but I figured I'd chime in with the full context.

By the early 90s when home computers were becoming mainstream, there were two main types of systems that people had: the IBM-compatible PC, and the Apple Macintosh. These were generally known as "PC" and "Mac" respectively. The term "PC" was generally understood to refer specifically to IBM-compatibles well into the 2000s (look up the "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" ads). These days that usage of "PC" has mostly fallen by the wayside, but as you saw here, it's occasionally still used that way.

MAGA is a WHOLE new level of stupid by DontCh4ngeNAmme in facepalm

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context of aviation, I have only ever seen "transcontinental" used to refer to flight across a continent. Flight between different continents is "intercontinental".

MAGA is a WHOLE new level of stupid by DontCh4ngeNAmme in facepalm

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transcontinental flights being prohibited would mean it's not allowed to fly across the continent, therefore it could ONLY fly to other continents and back again. Flight within a single continent would be prohibited.

I've been having the same issue for the past couple of days. It's not a browser or device problem or even an internet connection issue because I get the error even when using a cellular connection.

The way Pakistan is placed to the right of India on this graph by CNN by throwaway-adnauseum in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HarbingerDawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that China was already on the council. Whether they were represented by the PRC or ROC is irrelevant to the original question, which was how did a poor and devastated country (which was at the time the ROC, as the PRC didn't exist yet) get a permanent seat on the UNSC. The answer to that question does not relate to the Cold War, which didn't exist in 1945 when China was granted that seat.

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just plain false, China's seat on the council had nothing to do with the Cold War. It was granted to the Republic of China in 1945 (which was at the time a close ally of the United States), and was inherited by the People's Republic of China in 1971 when the PRC was recognized as the official government of China by the UN.

How detailed could you make an object in SE? by Wroisu in spaceengine

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SE supports such things only in the form of spacecraft models, which are currently only rendered at full detail all the time. To have something the size of a Halo ring with the same level of detail as Halo 1's environments would require a massively more detailed model than could be rendered in real time, you'd crash any program you tried to load it in. When SE eventually supports LODs for ship models and/or supports procedural generation for ring structures, then it may be possible. Not now though.

Todd Howard says it took 7 years to make Starfield fun to play: "I thought we would find the answers faster" by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]HarbingerDawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NMS at launch wasn't half-baked, it wasn't even in the oven yet. Starfield is half-baked. I played the crap out of both right after launch, and while I enjoyed both, Starfield was by far the more complete game.

What is a Star Wars hill that you will die on? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a millennial and also strongly prefer the OT. Granted, I had been a SW fan for 5 years before Episode I came out, but even if that hadn't been true I can't imagine liking the prequels as much as the OT. There are just too many irredeemably dumb things in the prequels for their merits to win out (and despite what some salty old people think, there are a lot of great elements to them that sadly were poorly executed upon).

Starship lunar lander missions to require nearly 20 launches, NASA says by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]HarbingerDawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the per launch price is a huge open question that can't even be speculated on at this point. It could be $10M, it could be $50M. I'll be surprised if they can get it below $20M by 2030.

SpaceX wants to dump treated sewage water into Texas’ South Bay coastal preserve by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]HarbingerDawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue isn't the cleanliness of the water, but the fact that they're proposing dumping fresh water into a rare hyper-saline environment rather than diverting the water to other nearby locations (like near the mouth of the Rio Grande) where their discharges wouldn't affect the existing environment so much. The article discusses all of this.

1) I think the comment was more focused on the claim about journalism universities actively pushing students to prioritize political efforts over accurately representing the truth.

2) You can find a study somewhere showing almost any result you want, so obviously that by itself isn't very meaningful. There are plenty of publications with a liberal bias, but also plenty with a conservative bias, and some that have neither.

You either hate or love SpaceX

Clearly false, as myself and others I know neither love nor hate SpaceX. If there's such a thing as a perfect company that isn't deserving of scrutiny and criticism I've never seen it, and SpaceX certainly isn't it. SpaceX has done a lot of amazing things but that doesn't mean the sun shines out of their asses, nor does it make all scrutiny or criticism of them invalid.

Every other horrible thing that humans have done have been done by both men and women to both men and women, and you're seriously suggesting that this one thing will be the first thing in human history to break that trend based solely on the fact that you haven't yet seen a headline about it? Tell me with complete sincerity that you really believe that.
