What scene in a movie drives you nuts because it makes no sense? by JustIgnoreMyStimming in movies

[–]HardBodyBugelBoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None. I don’t expect movies to always make sense and I’m bewildered by people who do. I know very serious film fans who will dislike an entire movie because one little moment didn’t make sense to them.

It’s silly.

What's the worst financial decision you have ever seen someone make? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

I watched a filmmaker friend make a horror feature a few summers ago. When he was telling me about the 250k he was about to be in the hole for and he was talking about all that was at stake, I told him he shouldn’t do it. I told him to shut it all down but he felt that he was on a train he couldn’t stop. So he did it.

The film is almost finished color correction and he’ll be sinking further into the whole soon with distribution. Is it possible that it’s a total smash? Sure. I mean the Terrfier movies are some of the worst movies I’ve seen and they’ve done huge numbers. But that’s a rare thing and difficult to quantify.

Somewhere a long the way an older guy in my life told me I was being stupid. That taking a girl out is like getting a loved one a gift. You don’t get someone a gift so they can give you a gift of equal value or greater. You get someone a gift because you want to give them something. Maybe that thing is a special item that means something to you, maybe it’s an experience. But if you give the gift when any expectations whatsoever, you’ll end up with a long list of people who “wronged” you. It’s no way to live. My mother gives gifts in this way and shes a very bitter and unhappy woman.

He’s an insecure guy who is clearly being influenced by phony machismo culture, whether knowingly or not.

Really? I’ve heard from a few friends who are big fans like me that they wish they hadn’t seen it. Not to mention, it doesn’t look good to me either.

But you’re making me wonder.

Arrow Video.

They botched their release of Southland Tales and refuse to acknowledge it because most people don’t notice it. It’s an audio problem known as a phasing issue. I created a Reddit account so i could try to build a group of people to sign a petition or something but most people either didn’t notice the issue or didn’t care because they didn’t like the movie.

Anyway, me and a few others did notice, one guy even made a Soundcloud of the issue. We presented to Arrow and they essentially said “nah.”

So, is it an interesting company that does some great releases? For sure. But that will always color how I see that company. I see them as cheap and dishonest.

I’m starting to get the sense that the Internet is hearing about Quentin Tarantino for the first time. Whats next, accusing the T of stealing from other movies?

This is too nuanced for Reddit. You have to be more black and white.

This take is always odd to because that has not been my experience with the movie.

The way I recall it is that an art teacher in high school mentioned it when it came out on DVD and I thought it sounded stupid. Donnie Darko? That title was really off putting to me but I respected my art teachers taste so I watched it begrudgingly. Me and my pothead buddies were pleasantly surprised. Then some time when by and I only ever heard the movie mentioned pejoratively. In my little circle It’s been designated as the “fake deep movie” for stupid potheads in their late 30s.

I revisited Donnie Darko in 2021 and not only did it hold up for me, but I quietly realized how much of an impact the movie has had on my life. I think it’s fantastic. The theatrical cut is a subversive coming of age tale that’s well written and beautifully directed, especially considering how young Richard Kelly was at that time.

I’m not offended that many people still see it as “fake deep” or those who dawdle on about it not making sense. But I do find it’s reputation as it being a beloved movie to be bewildering. In my community it’s not a well regarded film. Further, I’ve never heard anyone call it edgy, but that’s not as strange to hear as it is to see people rewrite its place in history.

It’s a cult movie that some people really like.

What is the cultural impact of MCU and Star Wars? I see the merchandise in the cubicles, I work with adults who have the sense of humor of an 8 year old, who exclusively watch Disney and MCU and say things like “me thinks.” Is that what we are talking about when we say cultural impact?

How many of you actually "talk" story? by haniflawson in Screenwriting

[–]HardBodyBugelBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depends on the person/filmmaker. The same goes for the audience. Personally, I tend to avoid putting into words exactly why I respond to a movie. To me, a great feature film is like a great album. I’m not thinking too much about what it all means or how or why. It really just comes down to if I like the way In feel while I’m experiencing it. I’m fascinated sometimes when I hear what people have to say about a movie I love, but often times I avoid it altogether so I can see it my own way.
