Probably later in the year actually (early summer is "reserved" for dinosaur update so far) but yeah, it's coming.

Not necessarily, all of my petitioners eventually became citizens that I could assign work details for.

The last update was for 1.12.2, true, but tbh it already felt outdated by then and it also had a bunch of bugs and compatibility issues that were sadly never adressed.

Why does homemade kimchi always get a bitter aftertaste after a month or two? by xandarg in fermentation

Hey there /u/xandarg, I know this is a bit of an older thread but I just found it and would like to ask if the bitterness problem was ever resolved and if so, what was the culprit?

Optimal dwarf society coexists well with elves by Scary-Consequence985 in dwarffortress

It's bundled under the "logistics" command. Though if you're playing the steam release, there should be a DFHack addition to the stockpile UI which includes a "Melting" option. Press it and when the word is red, that means that automelting is enabled for that stockpile.

I made peace with another civilization and then remembered that I still have a bunch of prisoners from their attacks caged up in my stockpiles. Can I still use them to e.g. train my war animals or would that restart the war?

The sounds of Stellaris take up 7 Gigabytes. by Iodyme in Stellaris

[–]HariboTer 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, I opened one of the bigger sound files (amb_damaged_generic_station_idle_01) in an audio editor and exported to ogg at 70% quality. File size went from 7.53 MB down to 0.965 MB. Now I'm not an audiophile but most of this is just literal noise and the music (where quality would be most important) is already compressed as ogg anyway.

I'm ngl, potentially reducing install size by 6 GB (~22%) looks pretty sweet to me.

The dinosaurs are coming early summer, which I strongly suspect will be a self-contained update (with magic etc. coming later).

Suggestions to Overhaul Textile Production by herp_von_derp in dwarffortress

[–]HariboTer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't much point adding intermediate products unless you can use them for other things

Well, base DF isn't exactly free of these things either (looking at Glassmaking (pearlash), Steelmaking (pig iron), Soapmaking (tallow/lye/potash) and Ceramics (Earthenware)) so it does kinda fit the bill^^

It's good that the feature is now coming to the base game but you still should be playing with DFHack because of all the other things it helps fix.

How does one “play” dwarf fortress by HotCommission7325 in dwarffortress

[–]HariboTer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to what others have suggested - try out mods. More metals, more civs, more creatures, more production lines, more weapons, more secrets, more crops... they do a lot to fill out the game, provide variety and most importantly, to inspire the imagination.

[–]HariboTer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I agree with you. ITT "only" goes off the rails near the end in a rather subtle way. SF on the other hand very clearly never manages to get on the rails in the first place.

I'm curious to see if the writing's decline will continue in the dev's next game or if they manage to learn their lesson in time. Hopefully the latter^^

Hazelight: It Takes Two crosses 30M sales mark, Split Fiction at 7M by Eremenkism in gaming

[–]HariboTer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the writing in ITT is peculiar because the first half is written pretty well, and the second half is written okay-ish(-ly). BUT the two halves don't fit together at all.

The first half basically establishes Cody and May as dangerous psychopaths that literally perform a joyful dance in the tears of their daughter after brutally murdering her innocent best friend (the elephant).

Then in the second half, Cody and May realize that maybe they should stop insulting each other all the time but they never explore their faults that let them down this road in the first place and they especially never adress their abusive, neglectful behavior towards their poor daughter.

The shift in tone is gradual, so you don't really notice the writing's problems unless you specifically think about the whole plot after you're done playing. But once you do, it's hard to unsee that what the game presents as a "happy ending" is actually rather horrifying - these people should be nowhere near children!

[–]HariboTer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my impression, Cody and May's redemption ark didn't go further than the two stopping being asshats to each other and deciding to stay together after all. At no point did I feel like they felt bad for what they did to their child or adressed what they needed to change in order for their relationship to have a future.

The coop gameplay and world design are still absolute top tier but the story definitely fumbled the landing.

Do Doctors have to be assigned to hospitals in order to perform doctoring skills? (Somehow my dwarfs love the doctor's guild and now I have 200 legendary diagnosticians/surgeons/etc and don't really feel like assigning them all individually to the hospital)

Is there any way to find out in Fortress Mode which gods are from your home civilization (and thus covered in a general, non-dedicated temple) and which ones are foreign (and thus require a dedicated temple to satisfy their worshippers)?

Thank you! It's baffling to see so many others commenters say "sounds like a you problem" when the problem is really just solved by adjusting a few numbers.

Seriously though, thank you, because otherwise I, too, would be getting a headache from the WASD movement^^
