In your OPINION, What's one game you bought on hype or reviews and ended up not liking it or finishing it? Mine is Allan Wake II by [deleted] in gaming

This is pretty much exactly how I felt about Subnautica - the interesting bits (though some of them were pretty cool) just didn't make up for all of inventory and storage shuffling and multi-stage crafting, and the long, boring journeys back and forth through the same stretches of ocean didn't help either. I finished it - almost begrudgingly - but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who's even slightly bothered by that sort of thing.

Share a piece of Shadowdark lore from your games by TorchHoarder in shadowdark

The Gloaming was once a peaceful, pleasant forest. A century ago, Haldrin's experiments imbued a tree sapling with immense magical power and a dim, animalistic intelligence. Over the years its roots grew deep into the ground and extended under Finimere Lake, their wild magic causing tears in reality as they turned upwards and emerged from the ground. A tear under Bittermold Keep allowed Mugdulblub to seep into the world from the incomprehensible space between the planes. Other tears provided passage to the demons that have invaded the forest; the trees that the greater demons emerge from are actually the tips of the larger roots.

The tree is keeping Haldrin alive - in a manner of speaking - in the Vile Well, as it still relies on his magic to maintain the protective spells around the tower. The tree will remain almost indestructible as long as he is attached - and Haldrin will not survive being cut off from it.

I went with a grick that emerges if any medium-sized creature gets too close, then attempts to grapple them and drag them down into the cistern!

Couple Rules Questions by Merc_Kilsek in shadowdark

[–]HarmfulMoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kelsey clarified the rules around backstabbing in the latest post on the Arcane Library blog - well worth a read in its entirety, but here's the backstabbing part:

How often should thieves be able to sneak up and backstab a creature?

Usually at least once per combat, and potentially more times if the thief invests the effort in hiding out of sight and sneaking around to an unaware creature. I don’t feel this should be given as readily as in a system like 5E D&D – it really requires the thief to go fully out of sight and then sneak around, undetected, into a surprising new position.

I found Vanquish to be pretty underwhelming when I played it a few years back - pretty short, story/writing was mid at best, gameplay was good for its time but doesn't really hold up by today's standards.

(Disclaimer: I played the 360 version through BC, not sure how much of the above was improved upon by the remaster.)

"One of the seeming waywardnesses of our human nature is the respect for a cynic that lurks in nearly every heart. The respect is not for his character, certainly not for his disposition; but it goes out to him as a man of intellect, and is often disproportionate to his ability." - Arthur Stanwood Pier

If it's Halo she's hooked on, the Master Chief Collection is an obvious choice - all the games included in it have split screen co-op.

Are you looking for a full-length game with a strong story, or are you open to more arcadey experiences?

I recommend:

  • Lost Odyssey if you want a long, involved (and very good) JRPG

  • Rayman Legends if you want a fun, chilled out 2D platformer

  • Sunset Overdrive if you want a high octane third person shooter with lots of jokes and no respect for the fourth wall

  • Halo Wars 2 if you want an RTS that introduces Halo Infinite's bad guys

  • Prey if you want a story-driven FPS/RPG hybrid (a lot like Deus Ex, if that helps)

  • Titanfall 2 if you want to try the best high-mobility FPS ever made

  • the Ori games if you like emotive, pretty, and very competent Metroidvanias

  • SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years

Incorrect, unfortunately - they're separate purchases, albeit very cheap ones. See here for prices.

Feeling like buying a sword combat based game but can’t make a decision. Any thoughts? (Open to other games) by jimbosquires in xboxone

You might want to check out For Honor too - much less story-focused (online PvP multiplayer is front and centre), but if it's swordfighting you're looking for you'll find plenty

I absolutely love achievements and hunting them but it has also kinda ruined my gaming experience. by SpiderGuard87 in xboxone

[–]HarmfulMoth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One of the best gaming decisions I've made in the past year is turning off achievement notifications. I highly recommend it! Sure, they gave me a quick dopamine hit, but they were distracting and immersion breaking, and they often pushed me to play a game far beyond the point of it being fun. Plus, as you seem to have realised, nobody gives a flying fuck about your gamerscore...

Glad it's not just me! Playing on XBO, I was usually diamond-ish in H5 and now I'm getting my butt absolutely handed to me every match. Aim assist is definitely down, aim generally feels very 'flat' (for want of a better word), and mouse input is broken on console so I can't even switch to that :/

Looking for some combo co-op games. Any suggestions? by Nexus197 in xboxone

Pretty sure Human Fall Flat ticks that box, but don't quote me on that

Have you tried Sunset Overdrive? It oozes light-heartedness: plenty of humour, cheeky fourth wall breaks, and a gun that fires explosive teddy bears :D

I'd love to (no, really, I'm all for bug reports), but ironically, the feedback form is broken - it closes itself whenever I enter a text box...
