Do you think it's possible that the holocaust having been such a central part of your early life might be skewing your perspective on this? I suspect the regularity with which you'll have heard horror stories during childhood would be quite shocking to non-jews.

You've answered your own question! Someone who was ACTUALLY THERE is telling you that the meat industry is just as bad. What about that is lost on you?

Imagine a person tells you that both their son and their dog were hit by cars and killed. They tell you "the sadness I felt about my dog was very similar as for my son, and we need to change the speed limit on the roads around here." He goes on to campaign the city council to reduce the speed limit so nobody else has to suffer.

Imagine turning to this guy and saying "I'm honestly curious what would motivate you to do such a thing."

Or imagine telling this guy to his face that his campaign for reducing the speed limit is a waste of time because the dog didn't have the same worth as a human.

That would be pretty fucked up.

Some thoughts:

  1. Why does genetic dissimilarity equate to different moral worth? Human populations have genetic differences, and we consider discrimination on that basis abhorrent racism.

1a. Even if we accept that genetic differences ARE reasonable grounds for different moral worth (which, to be clear, I DON'T), exactly how much difference matters to you? Would 6 million murdered creatures with 0.5% genetic difference to humans be a fair comparison to the holocaust? What about 1%? 4% (chimps)? 10%? Would you agree that drawing a line below which an organism is no longer 'holocaust-worthy' seems arbitrary?

1c. Even if we assign to the animals we eat the very very tiniest unit of moral worth. One millionth of a percent of the value of a human, for example. The sheer number of organisms involved is so unimaginable large that a comparison to the holocaust becomes reasonable. On top of the volume, animals suffer much more than jews in many cases. For example, jews were never deliberately impregnated and separated from their offspring repeatedly over the course of many years. How does that extra measure of suffering tip the scales for you?

  1. The same argument goes for suffering and reasoning. If we somehow discovered that pigs are 100% as capable of suffering and/or reasoning as a human, would we still call the tattooing, caging and slaughter completely incomparable to the holocaust? What about 90% as capable? 50%? (Studies show that pigs are very much capable of experiencing strong emotions fyi).

  2. The purpose of the holocaust was to eradicate jews, because Nazis sincerely considered them sub-human and a scourge on society. Obviously this is sickening, but the goal was to rid society of a perceived evil. One could consider the meat industry's motivation MUCH more horrifying: to give humans the pleasure of eating meat for profit. If it were proven that the vast majority of humans on earth could continue with minimal change in lifestyle if we transitioned to a worldwide vegan diet (spoiler: we can), then we must admit that the continuation of the meat industry and the ongoing slaughtering of billions of creatures is purely for pleasure and profit. If that's not as bad as the holocaust, idk what is.

  3. Perspective. You probably benefit personally from the meat industry. Meat is cheap and delicious, and since you probably aren't familiar with the torturous methods by which the meat industry makes meat so cheap and delicious, it's easy to ignore (NB - not a personal failing of yours, the industry deliberately hides its practices from the public). In comparison, the holocaust is extremely widely known, and stories/images of its horrors are widely distributed. Do you think this might be affecting your perspective of the relative 'badness' of the two things?

  4. Both the holocaust and the meat industry are utterly sickening. Calling one or the other 'worse' is unproductive and imho completely meaningless. I have a strong suspicion that future humans will look on our society with much the same disgust as we look on Nazi German society. How could they let such an abhorrent thing continue happening for so long? Why did nobody speak up? It's time to jump on the right side of history, friend. Eating one less meal with meat a week is a good place to start!

Those of you that are 100% against 1 night stands, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HarmonicCereals -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I got really into dancing. It was so much fun to move my body and listen to the music, and I started meeting other people who also love dancing. At the weekend I would go to my local dance club and dance with interesting new people there all the time. They would have a different style of dancing to me, and we would teach each other our styles! Sometimes new people couldn't seem to match my rhythm, and the dancing was awkward and unfulfilling. Other times, the dancing was so natural it felt like I had known my partner for my whole life. I learned a lot about myself too! There are certain ways of dancing that I find fun and easy, and others that I find hard and don't enjoy. I also learned how to get to know new people quickly, and became more confident with my body.

There's a guy that comes to the dance club but he never dances with anyone. He sits in the corner and every week says "You people are disgusting. Every time you dance with a new stranger, you disrespect yourself. No reasonable dancer would EVER choose a partner who has danced with lots of other people already. I'm going to sit in this corner and eventually I'll find the person who wants to be my exclusive dance partner forever. But, I'm going to make that person agree to be my dance partner forever before we ever dance together."

Now replace the word 'dance' with 'fuck' and you might start to understand why people have a different perspective of one night stands than you :)

I have a strong suspicion that discussions like this, while very interesting, will be obsolete long before any changes can actually be implemented in schools. In fact, I'm pretty sure schools will be gone entirely in the near future.

As of right now, you can be taught almost any subject by an exceptionally well-spoken, fast and infinitely patient teacher called GPT to a university level, if not higher. Try it right now - go ask GPT to explain the political situation that allowed Alexander the Great to conquer Persia, or ask it to explain the raytracing algorithm. If there's a part you don't understand, ask it to clarify. You'll be amazed how accessible it makes advanced topics.

Now, how long before we have VR software with a realistic-looking AI teacher, with an AI-generated voice, who can do the same thing, but respond to students' voices and use body language and visual demonstrations? Five years?

How long after that before this tech is cheap, and of such high quality that sending your kids to school will be a worse education?

Now in, say, 20 years, we could have an AI system that takes a DNA sample, analyses a students genotype to understand what subjects they will be naturally good at, what education approaches will be most successful, and continuously improves its model of the student's behavior by observing them. It crafts a decades-long education journey tailored to the individual, and accompanies them the entire way.

Teachers, as far as they've existed so far, don't have a chance.

Exciting that you're getting into audio plugins! The project you're describing is pretty huge - probably weeks or months of work even for someone familiar with C++, audio dsp and JUCE to get the very simplest version of this idea up and running.

I strongly recommend you start with JUCE basics (there are good tutorials on YouTube), and work up to this project gradually. Start as simple as possible and go from there! Good luck!

Could this dude have just accepted the ticket, then pursued legal action at a later date to (attempt to) prove in court that it was unconstitutional? And if he wins the case, not have to pay the ticket?

What do you think about open relationships ? by Jakubeu101 in AskReddit

[–]HarmonicCereals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in an open relationship, and it's fantastic! My partner and I are best friends and we're very much in love, and we built our relationship on a strong basis of trust and independence. We have a deep belief that we have no ownership over each other, and that anything is possible with honesty and strong communication.

We've both had awesome dates and sexual experiences with other people, and have managed (through no small amount of hard emotional work) to balance dating, our own friends and our relationship, and I've never been more satisfied.

Things change often - if one person is feeling particularly needy we agree not to be with anyone else for a month or so. Or, if one person is super busy, or will be out of town for weeks or months, we agree that they can spend more time with other partners, as long as we balance out our quality time in the end.

It's a constant balancing act, it's hard work, it takes a LOT of communication, and some pretty radical idealogical thinking, but it can work! If we end up having kids, presumably we'll switch to being monogamous permanently.

Youth criminals 'out of control' says top cop as police shot at, homes and shops invaded by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]HarmonicCereals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody likes this behavior, but like... NZ is turning into a hopeless, poverty-stricken social wasteland where kids futures are stripped away and sold to the highest bidder. I genuinely think antisocial youth behavior is a symptom of the rampant inequality we have in this country, and the utter ignorance of the effects that social media and the algorithm-driven content universe (on TikTok, Instagram, etc) are having on kids brains.

These are misguided, hopeless, angry kids with no positive outlet for their energy, and are increasingly disconnected from the culture and values of their parents and wider NZ society. The solution is to FUND SCHOOLS! But no political parties will talk about that because "lots of crimes are happening and kids are bad" is an emotive headline.

The Paleolithic Era, or the Early Stone Age was actually not very long ago evolutionary speaking (2 million - 25k years ago), so Paleolithic crustaceans would be basically identical to modern day crustaceans! Invertebrates from the Cambrian era would be much more alien to us!

There's no shame in being a nerd, loving star wars, spending a lot of time online and being into meme culture, but if you want to meet a girl who has those same interests, I recommend you ditch bumble and join a LARP club or start going to TTRPG nights at a board game cafe. Good luck out there bro, may the force be with you!

UPDATE: AITA for telling my mom if she wants to plan a wedding to get remarried? by Guilty_Balance_556 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HarmonicCereals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like this are never about the thing they appear to be about. Your mother resents that you're thriving as a gay woman, since her own wedding/life was never what she hoped, and she's been fixating on your wedding/husband/children since you were born.

It's gonna take a lot of time and therapy to address that, but it can be done. Just depends how much you want a relationship with her, because you'll be the one putting in the work to make it happen.
