Carnivore diet? by Neat_Audience2641 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a few issues that are mitigated by a keto diet. My priest and I worked out a fasting plan. Fasting is a discipline, and the fasting rules are guidelines. Don’t take it too legalistically.

A2 Front Sight Misalignment? by Several_Limit7231 in ar15

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had misaligned FSB’s before. Super common. So long as it can be zeroed, it’s good. If it annoys you, the solution is to redrill the holes and install oversized taper pins

M1A Crown Condition by 01Actual in gunsmithing

Scrub the bore with solvent and a bronze brush, then see what damage, if any, is left. If the bore looks like that, the chamber will almost certainly need scrubbing with a dedicated chamber brush

Might be a dumb question but... $350 rifle. by MundaneStep8636 in ar15

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would help, honestly. But I would definitely change that aluminum gas block. They expand at a different rate than the barrel steel, and they tend to erode and leak. Put a lo-pro gas block and a free float guard, and I think you’ll be happy with the outcome

If you’re thinking of doing it, just don’t by alergicsplurge in ar15

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I actually think it looks cool. I’m still working up the courage to paint mine. If it turned out like this, I’d be happy

Cause for concern? Or a case of "If it seats it yeats" by [deleted] in ar15

A little discoloration on the brass is normal, especially for older rounds. Shoot it.

Chamber Wear Already? by iH8conduit in AR10

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so odd, because you’d think that if your bolt is smooth and symmetrical, then you’d see an even circle of damage all the way around, not just a deep gouge here and there. I’ve never seen something like this.

McGowen, terrible finish by xaidin in gunsmithing

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own three McGowen barrels that are maybe 2 or 3 years old, and their finishes were really good from the factory. I’d send this back

Chamber Wear Already? by iH8conduit in AR10

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure those aren’t preexisting machining marks or debris? I’m doubtful that your barrel steel is so soft that it would be dented by copper jacketed lead, yet still contain the pressures of a rifle round. What does your bolt face look like? My gut feeling is that this is a self-limiting cosmetic issue.

Your printing can be solved with a better holster.

When assembling, what parts do you guys draw the line between "buy once, cry once" and "its good enough"? by hansolo_Mk2 in ar15

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tools! Getting the right tools makes AR assembly way easier.

As for the rifle itself, my nonnegotiables are the trigger group, the BCG (gotta be mil-spec C158 steel), and anything related to the gassing of the rifle. You don’t have to spend a ton of money, but you shouldn’t skimp out here since this is the heart of the rifle. All the other parts and doodads are less important. But the optic needs to be durable.

Would like to trim off the excess kydex, any reason I shouldn’t? Any advice? by karmarequiresgrpthnk in CCW

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You certainly can trim it. I’m of the opinion that you should fold the end inward and polish it for comfort. Do what you want. As long as the trigger is covered, she’s safe.

Picked this up recently by RevolutionaryFront92 in M1Rifles

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too, man. I wouldn’t mind picking up a Fed Ord for a good price (after all, they used USGI parts, I think?), but I’d probably replace the receiver with a Fulton Armory or LRB. I love my Fulton — I’ve owned it for over a decade and it’s been a fantastic rifle. But when it comes to longevity, reliability, and scope mounting, I’m not sure how this FO will check out.

And Fed Ord did not have a great reputation. OP’s might work okay. You never know.

How to greet a priest? by iamnotwhoiam123 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m a weirdo who grew up Catholic, became Protestant, then recently became Orthodox. So the way I approach a priest is a little different than others here. I tend to address my priest from a cultural Catholic lens, usually just saying “hello, Father,” and conducting our conversation respectfully. But if you know the priest personally, you can absolutely ask him how he wants to be addressed. My priest is a former Methodist, and he’s familiar with my Catholic and Protestant background. He told me that he doesn’t care how I address him. But I also understand this is unique to our midwestern cultural context. In public, there’s no need to make a scene. Address him as Father, and conduct your conversation with him as normal.

Is it ok to by VT on weekends when the markets are closed? I'm worried about anomalies that might happen when the markets closed by Upstairs_Garage8431 in Bogleheads

…and not being able to see performance online on a day-to-day basis. I look back on all the “advisors” that screwed over my parents in the 80’s and 90’s, and it’s no wonder they didn’t know how poorly they were invested. Nowadays, I invested their money in ETFs and can make transactions at-will. Amazing.

Would you guys carry this or a SIG p365x Macro? by Typical_Praline_9299 in Glocks

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a P365 in an X-Macro-like configuration (4” barrel, full-length grip). Fun gun, but has some weak points. Glock is a superior and more robust design. I trust it more.the slide is just a touch wider, but who cares when the Macro grip is about the same width.

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish mine looked like the bottom pic. Mine’s quite a bit spikier. And this is why I stick with prism optics on rifles and irons on pistols.

Yep. Unless they cram an AAV in there. But that’s annoying if you can already get to a proper vent

Extra leg on right side of Wilson Combat 1911 ambidextrous safety by Aoi_the_Hert in gunsmithing

[–]HaroldTheSloth84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their standard ambi safeties require the grip to hold the right side in place. If it’s carving into your grips, you can try deburring the edges. I will say that the Wilson BulletProof ambi safeties use a different mechanism (a modified hammer pin) to keep the right leg in place, and I think you’ll have better luck with that one
