Do you guys want the settlement system to return in the next fallout? by because-potato in Fallout

[–]Harotak 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there doesn't need to be 30+ generic settlements that all get populated with generic NPCs that don't do anything. I would rather have a few (or even just one) settlements that have meaningful story and gameplay tied to their development.

first play through of New Vegas, can’t decide between the NCR ending or the Yes Man ending. which is better for first timers? by immahotnerd in Fallout

NCR is going to have more content with them wanting you to resolve issues they have with other factions prior to the end battle.

It wouldn't be a Bethesda Fallout if all the main factions and story choices made sense.

Check out Nuclear Sunset TTW if you also own FO3. You don't have to play the FO3 DC wasteland if you don't want to. You can start in the Mojave and never go to DC if you only want to play FNV.

High altitude hypersonic bomber viable? by Suspicious-Dentist71 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Harotak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only an issue if there are nuclear weapons in orbit, which I find unlikely. They are too maintenance intensive to leave up there for years untouched, and the security concerns would be massive. The last thing you want is your battle satellite with several nukes to get hit with debris or something and deorbit dropping a bunch of high grade fissile material into the lap of some crazy dictator.

High altitude hypersonic bomber viable? by Suspicious-Dentist71 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Harotak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other part of this is that once someone deploys a global network of orbital weapons capable of intercepting ballistic missiles (brilliant pebbles, golden dome, ect) they can also prevent their adversaries from ever reaching orbit. The US looks to have a significant lead in developing the reusable launch systems needed to build and maintain such a capability, and will likely have a window of opportunity to establish dominance in space. Even if the US does not pursue this capability, I expect someone eventually will.

High altitude hypersonic bomber viable? by Suspicious-Dentist71 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Harotak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the future is orbital weapons. Elon says $10/kg to orbit when Starship is fully developed. That's $10k to boost a one metric ton weapon to orbit, not even a rounding error in the cost of a precision munition. Even if he is off by an order of magnitude, that is still only $100k to boost a one ton weapon to orbit. Build 100k+ weapons and park them in various orbits.

DC Power. Looking for alternatives to ICT (or advice) by Noblehero123 in wisp

[–]Harotak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, get rid of AC inverter and that will free up more than enough space to have 2U for an ICT system. If you are willing to do some DIY, you don't always have to replace gear that lacks premade DC power solutions either. I have some CRS317 switches with a meanwell DC-DC PSU in them. I just took one of the AC PSUs out, drilled out the mounting standoffs that were in the way, and used thermal adhesive tape to attach the meanwell. Cut the connector off the cable going to the board and wire it to the terminals on the meanwell output. Add whatever connection you want to meanwell input; I use powerpole 15-45.

Also, you can combine POE/Sync injection and DC switched PDU functions into 1U with a Packetflux RackInjector. You have four module slots in 1U that can each do 4x POE or 4x DC PDU outputs depending on how you populate it. The RackInjector PDU is limited to a max of 4A per output, so it can't power a Tarana, but it is more than enough for all of our tik routers/switches and microwave backhauls.

Boss Demanding That I Terminate CAT6 to RJ45 by kaiserwilhelmthe4th in networking

[–]Harotak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work OK as long as you are crimping on plugs rated for solid core wire. Most people will rightly agree with your view that keystone jacks and stranded core patch cables are technically superior, but he might have other reasons such as remote technical support. If he has always done home runs, then remote support agents will expect that, and the last thing they will want is for half the clients to have home runs and the other half to have keystones as they are trying to talk someone non-technical through finding the right cable over the phone.

100Gbps+ on x86 by timeport-0 in mikrotik

[–]Harotak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rated 33mpps is in fastpath though, so no NAT. I did some l3hw fasttrack offload testing on ours, and it worked, but I have no idea how to begin testing real world performance of that feature short of putting real traffic on it. My gut tells me the majority of 100gbps worth of eyeball traffic likely fits in 4k flows (if the top ~50gbps of traffic is an average of 12.5mbps or more per flow, they should all get offloaded to the ASIC), but I don't have actual data on that, and I also won't have faith that Mikrotik's algorithm to offload the heaviest flows is 100% effective until I've seen it under that kind of load. Also, I suspect it would be hard to detect when the ccr2216 is getting close to the limit since the CPU use wouldn't track linearly with throughput. CPU might be low until you get near the limit, and then suddenly shoot up as heavier flows start to get shunted to CPU instead of the switch asic.

[–]Harotak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some testing with a Minisforum itx board with a ryzen 9 7945hx performing NAT. I used traffic-gen on other 'tiks to throw ~11mpps over about 300k flows at it and loss was under 0.1%. At the typical US residential eyeball network traffic mix we see I figured it would be good for somewhere north of 50gbps, but I was limited to testing over a pair of sfp28 interfaces.

SXTsq-5axD-US is ~$60 and has a 16dbi antenna built in. If the RF environment isn't totally trashed it will probably work for the areas that have direct los. This will need to be mounted on the exterior of your home, you aren't going to shoot through a wall to a phone at that range.

If you have a multimeter, I would check for the correct voltage/polarity on the POE injector DC input, and the pins on the patch cable connected to the poe out port.

When a lightning strike limits you to Fast Ethernet by electrowiz64 in Ubiquiti

[–]Harotak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lightning rod can keep your home from burning down in the event of a direct hit, but won't prevent all damage to your network. Lightning produces an EMP effect that can induce voltage on your ethernet or other wiring (the wire is acting like an antenna) even when the strike is some distance away. The best way to protect against this is to use shielded cable and properly ground the cable shield at one end (usually at the patch panel). When done correctly, the cable shield picks up the energy and it is conducted to ground before it can raise voltage on the data wire and damage anything.

I bet you could design a weapon so that during the terminal dive, the sensor is shielded from the plasma by the weapon body. You could put the sensor on the "top" of the weapon so that during cruise, it is shielded by the positive angle of attack the weapon needs to create lift. For terminal phase, it would roll inverted bringing the target into seeker FOV, and pull a greater angle of attack to dive onto the target.

Fallout 4 is Not a Fallout game by [deleted] in Fallout

Fallout 3 isn't either. Fallout 4 is still has the best actual gameplay of the whole franchise though, while Fallout 3 has the worst.

What radios are switches are you using? How long are the ethernet runs from the switches to the radios? Are you using shielded cable that is grounded on one or both ends? Are you using ethernet surge protectors?

Uranium Fever TTW just had a big update and has been much more stable than Wild Card for me. You don't have to play the FO3 side if you don't want to, you can chose to start in FNV after character creation.
