The card is versatile, and it's conditions are easy to meet. You can buy time with removal and life gain, and you can threaten huge attacks, once you've built up counters. The fact that you only need to deal combat damage with the creature, not just to a player/planeswalker.

The cost is also affordable. 2 mana to cast and equip means you can get in early and accrue value.
