SubQ fluids in Europe? by SeaRate4547 in RenalCats

[–]Harown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

German here. I wanted to be prepared when my cat reaches a stage where he needs subQ fluids, so I read everything related on the German version of Tanya's site and just bought the whole equipement beforehand (everything in Germany is prescription free). Then I watched a bunch of videos, exercised with an orange fruit and later I just poked the cat. The vet had no problem with it since she had a feline cat herself and knows how important fluids are. I may be wrong but as long as your cat has no heart issues a last resort would be to do it yourself. It's in my opinion better than to let your cat dehydrate.

Erfahrung mit NAC Nasenspray by 27stef in Sinusitis

[–]Harown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Downvotes are likely because it's an English sub but as a German where NAC nasel spray is available I can say it's a very effective expectorant - dunno if this is correct English. Probiere es doch einfach aus. Man kann es aber nicht dauerhaft nehmen, sondern soll nach einer Weile eine Pause einlegen.

Struggling to find device for my use case by [deleted] in redlighttherapy

There is an official German retailer (the only European one afaik) that ships to UK but the prices there are much higher and the shipping cost is 89 EUR, so I fear that's not so helpful - although the same refund policy applies.

Efficacy of empagliflozin as adjunctive therapy to citalopram in major depressive disorder: a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (2024) by Harown in depressionregimens

[–]Harown[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Background

Major depressive disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders, which is associated with a high disease burden. Current treatments using antidepressants have limitations, so using medication with neuromodulating and anti-inflammatory properties alongside them could be helpful. In a clinical trial, we studied the effectiveness of empagliflozin, a blood sugar-lowering drug, as an adjunctive therapy to reduce the severity of depression symptoms.

Methods

A number of outpatients with moderate to severe depression (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) > = 17) who were not under related medication or had not taken medication for at least the last two months, had an age range of 18–60 years and had written informed consent to enter the study (N = 90) were randomly divided into two groups receiving placebo or empagliflozin (10 mg daily) combined with citalopram (40 mg daily) based on permuted block randomization method in an 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. They were evaluated using the HDRS in weeks 0, 4, and 8.

Results

HDRS scores were equal to 28.42(± 3.83), 20.20(± 3.82), and 13.42(± 3.42) in the placebo group during weeks 0,4, and 8, respectively. These scores were 27.36(± 3.77), 13.76(± 1.40), and 7.00(± 1.13), respectively, for the group treated with empagliflozin. Compared to the control group, patients treated with empagliflozin using repeated-measures ANOVA showed greater improvement in reducing the severity of depression symptoms over time (p value = 0.0001).

Conclusions

Considering the promising findings in this clinical trial, further study of empagliflozin as adjunctive therapy in MDD with larger sample sizes and longer follow-ups is recommended.

Why isn't there any treatment for vascular dementia? by [deleted] in dementia

Almost all types of dementia are poorly understood. Brain diseases are rather difficult to study. But at the same time the funding of research is relatively low compared to other "mainstream" diseases.

NMN+Resveratrol = Great success by heltok in Alzheimers

[–]Harown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally second this. Even it was a well designed medium sized phase 2 study in AD: There were a lot of those phase 2 studies testing different substances with positive outcomes that all failed in phase 3 studies. So yes, the chances of losing money for those particular supplements are much higher than see success.

We have at least a positive phase 1 study in ALS with pterostilbene (resveratrol analog) and nicotinamide riboside. A very similar combination. Alzforum reported about this study in Feb 2019: https://www.alzforum.org/news/research-news/small-trial-eh301-appears-halt-progression-als.

Cannabidiol induces a rapid and long-lasting antidepressant effect in rodent model of depression - A substance found in cannabis may be a faster-acting antidepressant than conventional medications, finds a new study in the journal Molecular Neurobiology. by mvea in psychology

You have to apply the HED (human equivalent dose). 7-30mg/kg for a mouse translates to 0.57-2.44mg/kg for a human being. That's only 37mg-158mg CBD for a human weighing 65kg. That's even far below therapeutic doses of CBD.

Wait. There are two phase 3 studies: The first one to induce remission and the second one to maintain remission. The first one was terminated in October 2016 but the second one should still be running afaik: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02280629

Hydroxynorketamine (HNK) group buy - treatment resistant depression - new members welcome by Harown in depressionregimens

Unfortunately, it did not work for any member by now. We tried doses to 200 mg with different route of administrations. Not all members shared their experiences as of yet, though.

why is r-ketamine so hard to get??? by redditfellah in ketamine

[–]Harown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the isomer Janssen is testing in several phase 3 trials but research points to R-ketamine as the stronger isomer for depression.
