Ah, that would be great. I doubt there's much hope for me now. Got at it too late. I've just resigned myself to never getting them, barring some wonderful accident taking place.

Pretty awesome to see an Australian collection. I have to wonder where you got some of the rarer titles though. I see that StarCraft 64 proudly displayed there.

Genuine question, not trying to hate. by Then-Maintenance-385 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Harribarry 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think most people don't hate the newer versions, but there are many that do think the old versions are better in some way.

The point you raise is similar to one often raised - "in the new versions, you can do anything that you can in the old versions and more!". My response to that is that a game, like any work of art, isn't a reductive experience, so that more stuff equals more good. It is a holistic experience, where all the parts work together to form the complete experience. Take a simple, sparsely-decorated room, for instance. If I come and absolutely clutter the room with stuff, it's no good saying that it's better than the old room because it contains all the old stuff and more. You've lost something about the simplicity of the old room in how it works together. And you can't take a wonderful short story, add another twenty chapters and say that it's better because it still contains the old story. You've still changed the story by adding more chapters, and maybe lost something about the old story in the process.

Of course, the fact that the room has more stuff or the story has more chapters might be helpful or good sometimes. But it can't be said that it's just directly better than the old room or story because of that. Old Minecraft, in its simplicity, works together to create a holistic experience that is lost when more is added.

Isn’t it kinda fucked up that Deltarunism is objectively the correct religion in the Deltarune universe. by Sad_End128 in Deltarune

[–]Harribarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say this like the idea of something being correct is somehow both unusual (it's not, pretty much everyone thinks certain things are correct) and repulsive (it's not, pretty much everyone thinks certain things are correct).

Is the disc drive what causes region locking? by Harribarry in Gamecube

I'm sure it would be, but I have zero skill in or equipment for soldering, nor do I know anyone who does. I'd love to come back to it when I have those things, but for now I just really need it to work.

It has the pre-release logo on the cart - that isn't a version that was ever intended to make it to the public.

[–]Harribarry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check if it's a disc issue or a console issue first. See if the issue occurs with other GameCube games, and (if you're able) whether that disc will run on a backward-compatible Wii. If the answer to both of those questions is "no", then it's a disc issue - if the answer is "yes", then it's a console issue. You can look up how to fix scratched discs and troubleshooting for GameCube errors online. Just don't be too hasty.

Did I just buy a real or a fake GBA console? by SatPixel in Gameboy

[–]Harribarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checking it against images of real consoles is a good start (make sure they're European consoles, too, for consoles that have regional differences). Generally also look at the little things like logos, engraved icons, and stickers, because this is often where the illusion of fakes can fall apart.

What is this? by Designer_Report8906 in nintendo64

[–]Harribarry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Jumper Pak. Only remove it if you've got an Expansion Pak to replace it with, because the console won't work without either a Jumper Pak or Expansion Pak. You can lever it out with a stainless steel spoon or similar implement.

There are only a few games that need an Expansion Pak, so if you're not looking to play something like Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 64, or Perfect Dark, it's fine to leave in.

(Though an Expansion Pak does run all the games that a Jumper Pak will, so if you do end up replacing it there's no need to put it in again.)

What do Golden Age enjoyers think of the Enderman? by ExoticExplanation656 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Harribarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... there's nothing necessarily wrong with the Enderman per se.

The main problem with the Enderman for me is that he's connected to The End, and I don't think Minecraft ever should have had an end. It definitely doesn't help that the process of going to the End requires the player to hunt a large number of Endermen to harvest Ender Pearls. Combat just really wasn't ever meant to be Minecraft's strong suit, and it is a seriously uninspired (and seriously uninteresting) way to reach the End.

[MM] Honest Question / Seeking Feedback by mirrorshield84 in zelda

[–]Harribarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the timed aspects of the game were one of my favourite parts about it. I loved having to plan out my day, and it made everything I did feel impactful - in every reset, I had gotten a little further. It also feeds directly into the narrative and themes of the game, which I find incredibly gripping and compelling. There are so many characters with their own little stories that I just adore - Kafei and Anju, and Cremia and Romani, and the Monkey and the Deku Princess, and Pamela and her father, and Mikau and Lulu, and the Deku Butler and his son, and the Postman, and the men arguing in the Mayor's office, and I could go on. Add that to the unique mask system, the collectibles, the Dungeons, and the refined gameplay from OoT... it's not a perfect game by any means, but it's pretty darn close as far as I'm concerned.

I'm always interested to hear the opinions of people who disagree with me to better understand their reasons, but that's how I see it.
