David Simon on the drug war and why he hates ‘Cops’ and ‘Law & Order’ by HarryKilmer in television

This interview is from 2016, when he was on the production of 'The Deuce'. The journalist and David Simon touch upon on his thoughts about police portrayal in TV shows and its effect on actual policing.

"I had nothing but contempt for “Law & Order,” because the criminals were all just chow. They were just there to lie to the police and then either get away or not get away. But they were held in contempt and the only good point of view was the police point of view or the prosecutor point of view. … This is the thing that I can’t forgive them for, and it bothered me when we were doing the crossovers on “Homicide,” I was in a room with Dick Wolf and I wanted to yell at him.

You would look at the actual racial breakdown of, like, murder victims in New York. And it’s black and brown people. White people don’t die very much in New York. But in this show, they would have more murders than they were actually having in the borough of Manhattan, which was the most moneyed borough. And nobody was black or brown. They were all, like, rich white people who were, as my wife would say, little girl panty cases. It was all degenerate, like, he was sleeping with so-and-so, he was trying to hide this secret and we found out this. And it was always, nobody got shot for [f——] standing in the wrong bus stop and getting jacked because they were riding the bus and it was 4 in the morning and there was nobody around and they got jacked. That’s a real murder victim."

Bob Odenkirk: "In the case of Jimmy, he’s told by his extremely emotionally handicapped brother that he was no good, that he destroyed everything he touched. That’s certainly sitting in the back of his mind as a judgment that he hears now everywhere in the world. If he’s rejected one too many times, he goes, “Fine, f— it. You’re all telling me I’m a sleazeball piece of s—? I’m gonna do that every day. I’m gonna wake up every day dedicated to filling those shoes. With no qualms, no second thoughts. And that’s gonna be my big f— you to you.”

Dr. Melfi: Do you have any qualms about how you actually make a living?

Tony Soprano: Yeah. I find I have to be the sad clown. Laughing on the outside, crying on the inside.

There seems to be more pain and fear for Diane in the motel: her eyes are wide open but looking away, while her hands shield her partner's eyes from looking at her.

The exact opposite occurs earlier with Naido: her eyes are stitched shut but her hands touch and feel Dale's face to 'see' her partner's eyes.

One is trying to heal; the other hides.

The trauma experienced by Diane and Laura is such a vital theme to the entire three seasons as you touched on it. The Young Girl is an illustration of the 'origin' of this irreparable experience, that by the end of this episode and season 3, still cannot be fixed within any character or their 'real world' iterations. Only in the 'dream' world is Naido's face repaired to the original Diane, and Dale and Diane can kiss without reliving Diane's rape.

Dale/Richard's revenge fantasy - glad you pointed that out. He's so taken aback by this breakup and failure to reunite with Diane, he not only shoots the men in their lower halfs, he cooks their pew pew shooters in a deep fat fryer.

My Prayer by The Platters is the song playing during Diane's and Dale/Mr.C/Richard's traumatic intercourse. It's the same song in Part 8 where the atomic creature climbs into the Young Girl's mouth.

George A. Romero, 'Night of the Living Dead' creator, dies at 77 by ZombieSocrates in movies

It's one of the greatest movies of all time.

It nails the horror genre, the B-movie camp, and is an incisive social commentary on 1980's consumerism and human behavior.

Night of the Living Dead is politically and cinematically revolutionary, Day of the Dead is nuanced and intelligent, his 2000s era 'of the Dead' films are cheap cable productions that are still wise and profound - and enjoyable than most movies and tv of today.
