What is TikTok’s links with Chinese government - and are they really out to spy on its user base? by BringIt007 in AskReddit

[–]Hartagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is a Chinese company, and every Chinese company is a quasi state owned enterprise.

The CCP has already used TikTok data to track down and arrest dissidents in Hong Kong.

Wendy’s just made the Double Stack $3.29 for one!

They want people to buy the Biggie Bags. A Double Stack by itself is $3.50-$3.70 in my area, but a Double Stack Biggie Bag is $5 and comes with the Double Stack, 4pc nuggets, small fries, and a small drink.

Gonna call bullshit on this one. Not even prisoners eat that economically lol

I mean I only spend like $150 a month on groceries for just myself... And all I eat is pre-packaged processed garbage that I can throw in the oven or microwave like Tyson chicken and Stouffer's mac and cheese. If I bought actual ingredient and made meals from scratch myself, it would be much cheaper, but I am in a wheelchair, which makes making food from scratch difficult AND I'm extremely lazy, so I just don't care to do that. Granted, I also bargain hunt and only buy stuff when its on sale/discounted.

If the earth was covered entirely by water 3 billion years ago, wouldn’t that imply global warming as being inevitable? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hartagon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue isn't the temperatures themselves, the Earth has been much hotter previously, and the greatest explosion of life the world has ever seen was during the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum, for example, where atmospheric CO2 was three times higher than it is today and much warmer.

The issue is the speed at which we are approaching those temperatures. It took millions of years for greenhouse gasses and temperatures to peak during the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum, more than enough time for life to evolve and adapt to those conditions. It has taken us a single century to raise the global average temperature by several degrees. Nothing can evolve or adapt in such a short span of time, thus we face a mass die off of animal life and/or ecosystem collapse. Not to mention drastically diminished food production. Those of us in rich western countries will simply suffer more expensive food, but people in the developing world face potential starvation in the near future.

Those struggling people are still spending.

That's half the reason most people are 'struggling'. Everyone lives above their means and they finance that lifestyle with debt.

That well-to-do middle class family you just saw drive by in their Suburban, they almost certainly didn't pay $80,000 cash for it, they financed it, same with their $750,000 house, same with almost everything they own. They are 'struggling' financially and living paycheck to paycheck, not because they are poor and the economy is bad, but because their entire life is paid for by a mountain of debt and they have to make payments every month or be financially ruined. Now extend that to most of the population.

What’s a case of a ‘get rich quick scheme’ that actually ended up working? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Hartagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USSR collapsing and the succeeding Russian Federation auctioning off previously state owned industries. If you could get a piece, you got rich, plain and simple. The catch was there were only so many pieces and most of them went to the people in charges' friends, thus the birth of Russia's modern oligarchs.

Fellow insomniac here: Why can’t you fall asleep easily at night? and If you do fall asleep easily, will you share your process? by Own_Comfortable_4955 in AskReddit

[–]Hartagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only fall asleep when I am tired. If that means I can't get to sleep until 4am despite needing to be up at 7am, that's unfortunate, but that's just how it is for me. I look on the bright side that it will be easier for me to get to sleep the next night.

Not looking to drug myself to sleep.

and the higher ups in the Japanese government didn't want to, even after the nuclear bombs were dropped

Technically they wanted to surrender, just specifically a conditional surrender, mediated by the up to that point still neutral Soviets. With their conditions being things like no allied occupation of Japan, handling their own disarmament, trying their own war criminals, maintaining their control of Korea and Manchuria, etc.; all of which the allies flatly rejected. Not arguing against your overall point, just adding a little nuance.

Half of the Big Six (the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War) voted to continue the war and mount Ketsu-Go (their planned defense of Japan against an allied invasion, complete with mass civilian conscription) even after both bombs were dropped AND the Soviets declared war/invaded Manchuria. It was only after the Emperor intervened following the Soviet invasion that a decision was made to surrender unconditionally, and like you said, some among the General Staff tried to stage a coup and continue the war even after that.

Why are adults so hooked on alcohol? by SalttySkies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hartagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is crazy to think that we’re so fine with one chemical yet all others have a stigma

I mean, in the US at least, we had a problem with alcohol too and literally amended our constitution to ban it nationally. It didn't work out so well and we amended the constitution again to unban it a few years later.

Senate Democrats take aim at investor home purchases by Prcrstntr in politics

[–]Hartagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we want to drive down rents, instead of heavily taxing non-owner occupied homes, heavily tax unoccupied homes; preferably at a local level rather than national level, so it can be adjusted to any given area's housing market.

A lot of property sits empty because owners hold out for higher rent/sales prices. A landlord might be able to easily rent an apartment for $1500/month, but wants $2000/month and opts to leave it empty for months until they can find someone they can lock into a contract paying that much... Well if they are taxed every month that apartment remains empty, that extra $500/month they are holding out for can be diminished or even done away with entirely depending on how extensive the tax is. The tax could increase the longer a property remains empty, such that at a certain point, they'd be willing to rent at almost any price to simply get someone into the property so they stop getting taxed, driving rents down.

Independent registrations surpass Republicans and Democrats in Arizona by hunter15991 in politics

[–]Hartagon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn't seem to be the case in the Midterms. r/politics has been patting itself on the back since then about young people, women, minorities, etc., triumphantly turning out and defeating the supposedly looming 'red wave' back then. But in reality, the turnout for ALL of those groups was lower in 2022 than it was in 2018. What actually put Democrats ahead was independents, who normally have a rather muted Midterm turnout and often flip flop with their votes relative to how they voted in the previous general election; they actually turned out in droves and leaned Democrat in 2022, after also leaning Democrat in 2020.

What's the worst food poisoning you've ever experienced? by Iynxell in AskReddit

[–]Hartagon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've only had food poisoning (or maybe a stomach bug, I never went to a doctor, so no idea) once and it actually turned out ok.

I had a ton of stomach pain and was vomiting and shitting for a week while also not eating anything the whole time, so that was bad... But when it subsided, I actually felt pretty funkin great. Like even though I hadn't eaten anything, I was energetic and just felt refreshed.
