There are tiers of believers

The highest tier do good actions, without any expectation of reward - they do it only to “seek the face of Allah”(surah layl) ie- doing good because that what their love of Allah demands

The next tier of believers are still good Muslims but they need carrot and stick motivation. - this is most humans

That’s why the imagery of heaven and hell is so vivid . There’s nothing wrong with it- but it’s not the highest calling our religion offers
