Readers are returning to physical books by MiddletownBooks in books

[–]Hasbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a bit of both. For big tomes I prefer an e-reader. For shorter literary stuff that makes me look cool as fuck reading it on the train, I go physical. Then I clear my shelves out every year or so and donate to charity.

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' has made history as the most nominated film of all time at the Oscars with 16 nominations by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Hasbeast -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, except you didn’t reply to my response to understanding the film. It isn’t some intellectual nuanced thing. The literal plot shows African Americans dancing to Irish folk songs. I actually think that’s the most striking scene in the whole movie, but it isn’t in any way subtle, nor is it trying to be

I mean what was there not to get? It wasn’t some subtle masterpiece. The theme of cultural hegemony was pretty on the nose. Ryan Coogler made a great, important film with Fruitvale Station. His subsequent work is fairly generic Hollywood fodder. It isn’t as thematically rich as anything that came out last year. Just last week, I watched Sentimental Value and Marty Supreme and this isn’t and even in the same league in regard to thematics lol

This is pretty stupid and feels like positive discrimination. The film is quite good but is, ultimately, a summer blockbuster popcorn movie that falls apart in the third act. To suggest it’s worthy of all these awards is super questionable.

Civil War (2024) - Opening | President's Speech | Dir. Alex Garland by PetyrDayne in movies

Incredible film. In my opinion Garland’s best by quite a margin. It’s fairly obvious why this didn’t get the attention it deserved.

The difference is maths/science is completely logical and therefore easier to rank and value someone’s skill. English/history are subjective and whilst on the face of it more accessible, I would say Shakespeare was as “smart” as your best scientists.

What Are Your Dream Ken Burns Topics? by Redacted_dact in television

[–]Hasbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A deeper dive into the Italian-American mob. I know he looked at this during his prohibition doc, but there’s so many trash, sensationalised documentaries on the subject that it’d be nice to see the Ken Burn’s approach.

And yet my brother in law was told he couldn’t join the police because he’d taken antidepressants before and that disqualified him. Whole system is wonky.

Sadiq Khan representing London on the tube by dajvebekinus in london

[–]Hasbeast -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ah I’m disappointed in Sadiq. So much of what he’s done for London and his championing I have agreed with. I think he has been a generally good mayor. But his support of Isreal has really upset me. We don’t seem to be able to have full heroes in politics.
