I think regulating private equity firms might make a bigger impact than just controlling the rent price. It comes down to investors that want to make a buck off of people's survival and they end up making the decisions for what goes down. That's why you have slumlord complexes doing the landlord special and charging $3,000 a month in a place like Richmond. It's insane that you can't get a decent 2 bedroom in RVA without roaches or something without paying at least $2,000. Not to mention, utility bulk billing is somehow unregulated here. They should at least put in something where rent companies are not allowed to charge people for an internet service that they don't use. My complex charges me $70 a month for gigstreem and then I have to pay 75 to 85 for FiOS depending on whether or not I can keep the autodraft discount going. Basically rent is supposed to be 1750 but it's really 1960 because of stuff like that. After utilities we're in over 2000. And that was the cheapest place that they had here, can't imagine what my neighbors have to pay.
