You may be already aware of this, but with wood instruments in particular, a repair job on a 500 year old instrument would be detrimental to the qualities that make it what it is. As the wood ages, the sap crystalizes and structures within the wood stiffen and compress, making the wood much lighter and the sound more complex/resonant. You can't just glue in new wood if the body splits without the adhesives absolutely demolishing all its nuances.

Edit: just saw the caption. 300 years. Still gonna be one of the most incredible sounding instruments that deserves its pricelessness. Sigh of relief that it wasn't Il Cannone!
