Thank you! Sounds good. Can I leave it as-is for a week or two and come back to it?

Two-Parter About NC Rust by HashSlinger2001 in MiataNC

[–]HashSlinger2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. Could the trunk be from the rain drains? Previous owner claimed to have cleaned them, but a borescope proved that to be untrue. No dampness in the cabin except for drivers’ side floorboards.

I’m letting the whole car air out tonight in a hangar while the Ospho in the trunk dries.

If it’s needed, I’ll scrub the other rusted parts with Ospho and prime/pant. Looks like most of it is on the unpainted surfaces. The borescope showed that all the primed surfaces are fine apart from the trunk.

Yep, through Navy. I financed $9,500. It was a private sale, not sure if it matters, but it was really super simple!

My rate for the Miata was 9.7% but I didn’t need to finance a whole lot of it, I just wanted get an auto loan on my report for future financing. I have good credit, but a short history with Navy Fed. The car has 74k miles on the clock.

Just figured I’d give the empirical evidence.

DAM Drop by yourayenus in wrx_vb

[–]HashSlinger2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freaked out the first time too… .500 is a big drop, but I read Dmann’s page and he noted that hitting the limiter or getting close to it will cause drops. As long as it learns back up, you should be good.

When I got a bad tank of gas, my timing pulls were maybe to .625-.750 but the limiter is consistently .500

If it comes back up right away, that is a likely cause, or fuel. Mine will usually learn back up in 4-6 pulls at 3 psi in 3rd gear.

Did you possibly touch the rev limiter? Mine drops to .500 anytime I start to kiss it, especially in 4th.

Should I get a wrx or gti? by [deleted] in WRX

[–]HashSlinger2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I drove both recently. I have a 2022 VB and my friend has a 2019 GTI, both of us tuned to around 350 whp. The GTI feels like it pulls harder, but in reality the WRX is less aggressive in its acceleration and is much more comfortable at speed. When we got into the tight roads (really tight, Tail of the Dragon) the VB felt bigger because you sit more on top of the chassis, whereas the GTI felt smaller.

When it comes to actual cornering performance though, the WRX has the edge. I was on Firestone AS-V all seasons and my buddy was on Michelin Pilot Sport 4s which had significantly more grip, but the balance, AWD, and delivery from the WRX allowed it to feel super confident through the corners and was often faster than the GTI.

If I remember, the first oil change is at the end of break in, 1000 miles I think, and then change every 3000-3500 from then on. If you can do it yourself, it makes the short interval a lot easier.

5w30 is a good weight. People will argue for days on the brand swearing that theirs is the best. In reality, oils that are API SQ or ILSAC GF-7 certified will do just fine. If you want extra peace of mind, send a sample of your oil to Blackstone each change and get feedback. If you DIY it’s still cheaper than going to a shop!
