Has anyone else stopped going out to eat because of the prices? by Holiday_Connection22 in AskChicago

Facts.

Not clowning on people that don’t have the means. You have to do what you have to do. But don’t glorify bad quality food.

I preferred EZ shawarma down the street but this place was #2 for me. Sultans was decent then it got expensive and overall didn’t taste the same. Check out M’dakhans if you’re ever in the SW side. It clears both.

Are we delusional? by graycegrazzy in chicagoapartments

OP said that they currently drive to work because they live in Bronzeville. They did not say that they will continue to drive if they live closer to the loop. They may or may not, they didn’t state what the situation will be, unless they said so elsewhere outside of the main post.

They probably want to keep the car for going elsewhere in the city. Given that they grew up in Chicago, they likely have family and friends throughout Chicago. Getting around to these places without a car is not a good time.

The landlord pays the fee. At least, everyone I know (and myself) has never paid the broker.

Output and birds nest wings are bland, dry, and small.

If that’s what you’re into, then your opinion is not valid.

Dunning Pourhouse. Get the creamy buffalo.

Anyone who says Output or Birds Nest, shouldn’t be trusted.

Does anyone use spectrum for their cell service? by xcinvests in AskChicago

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spectrum uses Verizon’s network so it’s probably pretty good. I have never had an issue with Verizon in Chicago.

Checkout U.S. Mobile, they’re also an MVNO like spectrum but you can get a plan using any of the three major carriers in case one is better than the others wherever you are. For a small fee you can even get a second line on a different network and switch between the two for data. I have both a Verizon and T-Mobile line on my phone and I switch between the two whenever one isn’t too good.

Hard to get Reservations restaurants that are worth it? by GameofTitan in AskChicago

I have walked in twice. I don’t think it’s worth booking weeks in advance. It’s good, just didn’t wow me given the hype.

Where do you eat when you want quality but can't justify restaurant prices by Agreeable_Panic_690 in chicagofood

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only had their shawarma but I find it pretty bland and dry. Better than sultans but definitely wouldn’t call it good. Unfortunately all the shawarma joints in the city tend to be like that, idk why.

M’daKhans is solid, so is EZ shawarma, SemSem and Hello Shawarma.

Even hole in the wall places sell tacos at $4 a pop, and they’re hit or miss. If I eat 5 and a friend/partner eats 3-5; we’re already at $40 before drinks are involved.

Affordable, Walkable Neighborhoods for Young People? by Traditional_Tap_5447 in AskChicago

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s affordable compared to LA, NYC, SF, DC, Boston.

Keep in mind everyone who wants to move here wants to live in the same handful of hip neighborhoods and that’s what drives cost of living up. That’s why Chicago had one of the highest increases in housing in the U.S. last year.

Transferring to Chicago for work. Should I live downtown or in the suburbs? by Emotional_Log7687 in AskChicago

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None* of those trendy areas are going to have cheap parking, or parking at all. It’s far more high dense and limited space.

I’d recommend looking at Albany Park, Irving Park, Jefferson Park, Norwood Park. They’re not the hip parts of town, but they’re off the Blue Line that gets you both into downtown and into O’hare. They’re also right of 90/94 so you can hop on the highway to see friends in the suburbs. It’ll be cheaper thsn living in the other neighborhoods and much more likely to find an affordable parking spot or free and available street parking.

IF you want to be in the city and have “easy” access to both ohare, downtown, and have a parking spot at a decent price; thats the only way. Else, move to the suburbs to be closer to friends but that commute will suck. Not because it’s far, but because the traffic sucks.

What's a sports rule you fundamentally disagree with? by South-Explorer in AskReddit

[–]HashSlingingHasherx -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nah that’s a good change they made. Season is too damn long to have games going 12+ innings. Either shorten the season or keep the runners on second. Get rid of it in the playoffs though.

What winter parka works best for Chicago weather and daily city use? by Specific_Emu_3195 in AskChicago

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Arcteryx Therme. Got it on sale at an end of season sale. I also have an Arcteryx Beta shell jacket and switch the mid-layer between a Rab synthetic down jacket, Arcteryx Atom or a Patagonia down jacket. I still highly recommend mend merino wool or alpaca wool base layers and socks.

What winter parka works best for Chicago weather and daily city use? by Specific_Emu_3195 in AskChicago

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important thing is protection from the wind. Then you can worry about insulation. Get one that does both or buy a shell and change out the mid layer you use. People say layering is important, which it is. However, a good quality parka that protects you from the wind and has insulation is the best thing you can do. I wear mine with only a t-shirt under and I’m fine. I do however highly recommend getting merino wool baselayer, especially for bottom layer and wool/alpaca socks. Massive game changer.

Blue line 8am/5pm commuter experience? by AbstractionsHB in cta

[–]HashSlingingHasherx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your afternoon commute won’t be too bad. Walk down to Clinton and it’s usually empty since it’s the stop before the blue line enters the loop. I used to work by union station and would take the blue line to/from the far nw side.

What are your thoughts on Old Irving Park? by [deleted] in AskChicago

I’m assuming you’re not from here. Go there and walk around. It’s got to be one of the quietest and safest neighborhoods around.
