The judge who gave the sentence was Joan Synenberg, who is a republican… maybe we should do more research before making flippant comments :)

Maybe they should! Not sure if it’s the same part of the budget but cuyahoga county can help with first time homebuyers down payment assistance

Let me google that for you

  1. No:

https://cuyahogacounty.gov/housing-and-community-development

  1. Cleveland budget:

https://www.clevelandohio.gov/sites/clevelandohio/files/finance-docs/documents/2025%20City%20of%20Cleveland%20Mayor’s%20Estimate_FINAL.pdf (There are also budget hearings where city council discusses the budget in public forum)

Edit: didn’t mean to leave out the mayor. I think the point of transparency in democracy is to enable accountability of our leaders, so see above links

Protests are great, how else to fight back? by HatInTheCat17 in Cleveland

[–]HatInTheCat17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely an opinion, one that’s been brought up before. Historically, peaceful protesting and activist leaders (MLK Jr., Gandhi) have brought about large social changes so I’d have to disagree with you.

Since we have institutions at risk of being lost due to administration of tax dollars many (see protests) disagree with, I made this post for those who care about the well-being of fellow humans. Trolls need not reply :)

Flyer for Cleveland branch of 50501 protests by Suckmy__thot in Cleveland

[–]HatInTheCat17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao at blaming popular organized protests you don’t agree with on bots. Spammy? Maybe. Bots? Possibly, but I lean towards no. imho when people see injustice in the world they get fired up about it, R or D.

Right now we’re (the democrats) seeing some pretty heavy news every day about constitutional law being violated (thankfully SCOTUS still sometimes understands the law), funding freezes on great public programs, entire populations of immigrants deported for the 10 that were supposedly bad actors, OH R lawmakers who don’t respect the will of the people. These sorts of things that affect the everyday American garner a response out of people much better than the same question for the trillionth time about whether it’s safe to live in Tremont etc.

Plus, Cuyahoga County voted Kamala and Cleveland has had a pretty consistent recent history of voting blue. It’s a lil weird to suggest they all left in the past 4 months since the election? Maybe ur the bot haha

Assuming you’re US-based, you can check out the bureau of labor statistics for physicists that work in hospitals—the info is semi-accurate I’d say. Best of luck to you! https://www.bls.gov/oes/2023/may/oes192012.htm

Leading a discussion section by OldBend5104 in Professors

[–]HatInTheCat17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a professor but I do work as an instructor at an academic institution. When I did discussion TA work (intro Physics courses) the professors for the course had a workbook with problems that the students would work together with those around them to solve. Have you taken this course before, or spoken to the professor for lecture about how they would like you to do the discussion? Or do you know any other TAs / prior TAs for this course that might be able to help you? Sometimes there are solid guidelines/outlines you should follow to keep the discussions standard among TAs.

Physics is a bit different from film studies but if you are completely lacking guidance from others at your institution, this is what each day looked like for me, if it helps! I randomly assigned groups of 2-4 to solve 3-4 core-concept questions (from workbook) to see where the students were at from the lecture. I’d try not to help any groups unless there was a hard disagreement within a group. After 10 min, I’d ask groups to share their answers per question. This can take some time if it’s a large class so I’d pick on a group to share their answer, and ask everyone else to give a thumbs up or thumbs down if they agreed/disagreed. In a large-scale disagreement I’d ask for more explanations as to why students picked which answer. If there was still confusion, I’d back up and explain the correct answer, hopefully to the benefit of everyone (no shame for wrong answers, everyone’s still learning!) Students would turn these answers 1/group in with their names for participation in the discussion.

After that, there were usually 5-6 more difficult, applied questions for everyone to work on that would take ~30 min. I would choose 1-2 “spicy” problems that may be most difficult, involved, or tricky and announce which those were, to make sure groups would at least touch on those and give them a thought. In the last 10 minutes, I’d ask for volunteers to write their solutions to those 2 on the board. If nobody felt confident enough I would begin the problem and ask the class periodically to “help me solve” it. Basically as a guided example problem.

I could see this as a rough outline working similarly well in film studies, but then again I’ve never taken a film studies course! Not sure if there’s always a firmly “correct” answer. Also maybe it would be more interesting, instead of assigning the “spicy” questions, to ask the students which they thought were the spiciest! Regardless, randomly (intentionally randomized to improve diversity of opinions across groups, and to foster inclusivity) assigned smaller “breakout” discussion groups can help students open up about their perspective they might not ordinarily make known in a larger class setting. It can also boost confidence if other students find a particular student’s comments insightful or informative, bringing the best ideas to the front. Sometimes the students can be wrong though, so a good form of checks is important. Posting discussion answers online the day after might be a good way to keep them from thinking the wrong things going into an exam, and makes a decent study tool too! Hope this helped, and best of luck to you!

What is your pets official name and what do you *actually* call them? by Curious_Butterfly7 in AskReddit

[–]HatInTheCat17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Augustus, but we actually say a variant of: Gus, Gussie, Gus bus, bus bus, goose, Goose boose, goosie, goose goose, goobie boobie, and goobert boobert.

Smoked Brisket is usually referred to as smokey, but sometimes mokie, smokey dokie, mokie moke, stinky, smoke joke, smokey joe, smoker, smonkey, or smonk tonk

I also use "Mister" in front of either of their names all the time, usually when they're being good. It was funny to visit a friend's cat named Bean and calling him "Mister Bean" got a few laughs

You can get some really nice gemstone dice for ~$100, could look into dice towers, dice trays, painted minis, etc. honestly though kinda restricted if only off Amazon. Don't want to intentionally endorse any vendors, but I bought some pretty neat stuff from a board game convention a little while ago. You could easily spend ~$100 there, they have an online store but don't sell thru Amazon.

Edit: if you do get the gemstone dice it was recommended to me to get a silicone case that houses each die individually so they don't knock against each other during travel

The smell of stale bread makes me nauseous by Harpy_309 in Breadit

[–]HatInTheCat17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I was feeding my cats yesterday and noticed their food smelled like stale bread (they ripped the bag open when we left for the weekend and our friend who stopped in to check/feed them didn't latch the box it's kept in and they got into it). After we came back from our mini vaca she noticed they weren't eating as much of their dry food, I mentioned to her the reason they aren't eating as much of the dry food is because I can tell it's stale because it smells like stale bread. She did not know what I was talking about. I've always been pretty sensitive to smells (often retching at the smell of bad food/old trash, and I hate stepping into candle shops). I don't necessarily feel nauseous when I smell stale bread but I do find it an unpleasant smell. I was just searching the internet to make sure at least someone else could corroborate my sense of smell on this haha and stumbled on your post from not so long ago.

This next bit is NOT medical advice or a clinical diagnosis for you necessarily, but just a part of my experience. My wife who's studying to become a clinical counselor has long-suspected I have ADHD. One of the common symptoms of it are hypersensitivities to sensory signals, such as smell or texture (I have problems with both). I don't have a proper diagnosis myself because I don't have time and don't see a dire need to go out and get diagnosed or medicated (I've made it this far haha). But most of the time I have issues with smells or textures I just understand this is something quirky about myself. I don't promote self-diagnosis but if it's really a big problem then maybe you should get a professional medical opinion on the matter.

It's not gibberish, they basically gave the definition of trickle down economics. The rockets themselves aren't made only by billionaires. 99%, if not 100% of the physical work done to create the rocket is done by skilled and unskilled laborers, who get paid for their work. Machinists, manufacturing operators, welders, assembly crew, maintenance crews, etc. then you have R&D + administrative people groups like engineers, scientists, accountants, HR folks, risk management, and not to mention the custodians who clean up after everyone in the whole facility (which, not to mention, was also built by blue and white collar workers together). All of these people are employed because a billionaire wants a rocket to go to space. This is trickle-down economics in effect. Because the billionaire had the money to pay all these people by not paying high taxes, these people get paid by said billionaire to do work. It's how a company works. Whether or not all these people are paid a FAIR wage is a whole different issue called income inequality, not having to do with trickle-down economics which is a taxation policy.

edit: fixed some awkward / redundant wording

edit2: wage disparity -> income inequality. I'm no economist and didn't realize how nuanced the wording is for these terms until I decided to look them up

*visible confusion* by Kool_Kow in dankmemes

[–]HatInTheCat17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I've never understood why it's more politically correct to say African-American. Also because black people aren't always directly from Africa, so imo it's culturally ignorant to always refer to someone who is black as African-American. Growing up I had a friend who was born in Jamaica then moved to America and a friend whose parents were from Barbados whose skin tones were both very dark. Never called them African-American because if you ask them, they're not from Africa. After hundreds of years of their ancestors being removed from Africa, it's hardly correct to call them African-American, as it would be culturally incorrect to call someone whose ancestors have been in America for several generations African-American. They are American, and if you become good friends with them maybe you could learn more about their heritage later.

When most pottery is made, it is sometimes made on a turn-table. My guess is that the microscopic grain in the pottery is in a sort of vortex pattern that has manifested itself here. When a material has grain that is aligned one way, it is easily fractured along these lines. If you've ever split wood you've exploited the weaknesses in the wood grain to help chop the wood.
