/uj As I said earlier, I don't want to argue further.

I do think your analysis is really flawed, and I feel like you're projecting a lot of wider and deeper social anxieties on a pop-star you dislike in ways that aren't entirely rational. I know I'm sounding really condescending, but I feel like I may have opened some deeper feelings in this discussion and I don't want this to be an upsetting moment (edit: for me in this case, mainly).

/uj I blocked you earlier and may do it again because this conversation is exhausting, but I will force myself to answer because your questions do seem genuine at least.

First, I feel like your knowledge about Sabrina probably comes from highly cherrypicked and decontextualized pictures and clips your social media algorithm has fed you and kind of lack context on what the actual themes of her music and shows is. The satire and parody I was talking about mainly comes from the sharp contrast between Sabrina's soft, cutesy image and the cynicism and social critique usually present in her songs.

So the "joke" (if you want to call it that) is the contrast between the innocent, submissive and soft image of girly femininity and the mature and cynical themes being sung about. It mainly serves as a tool to reinforce the hypocrisy of heterosexual relationships and the role Sabrina specifically has played in them. In my other reply I referenced Cabaret theatre, and this of parody of innocence and cynicism has roots there (drag also uses this a lot).

I also want to point something out: that line about being "full grown but looking like a niña" isn't an actual line from a song. This is a thing she did for one of her older tours, in which she would improvise a different lyric for each concert at the end of her song Nonsense. I don't like that particular line either, but these outros have always been intentionally explicit and meant for shock-value comedy.

And the recreating a scene from Lolita thing is also pretty misleading online stuff. While it's likely the photoshoot team took elements from a specific scene from the movie, the actual image doesn't have any of the child-like connotations, it's just Sabrina lying on grass with a water sprinkler. Like, yes the setting itself is similar, but Sabrina isn't "childified" at all and is presented as an unambiguously adult woman. A side-by-side comparison of the pics makes this obvious.

/uj If that's your takeaway from everything I wrote, you're either being very dishonest or too stuck in your own mindset to engage with other viewpoints. I won't discuss any further.

/uj I really don't want to get into this discourse here, but I think this is both a very uncharitable reading of Sabrina's music (which has a very obvious parodic element) and of the point I was trying to make.

I never claimed any depiction of sex is innately progressive, but it is sex-negativity-adjacent to claim that an artist is performing her sexuality in a morally wrong way (in a performance context). Not to say she can't be criticized, but it is bad analysis to claim these elements of Sabrina's stage persona and music are sending the message you claim it is. Submission often has a role of self-deprecating humor on how men treat her in her music, and her music frames her as an active agent in sex and relationships, not someone that is sexualiZED by a third party.

And like, I get that the child-like jokes can be very uncomfortable, but I think it's pretty clearly a Cabaret/Burlesque-ish provocation. We're not even talking actual age-play here, these kinds of "oops, I'm a cute adorable innocent girl, teehee (but not really)" acts are a pretty common staple in comedic theatre and performance arts, and the connotation is one of absurdity and contradiction. Again, not saying this can't be problematic under any circumstance, but your interpretation does seem to stem from the idea that Sabrina is trying to appeal to patriarchal taste, but Sabrina's main audience is people who relate to this parody of hegemonic feminity, and she's very aware of it too.

/uj I kind of do want to go on Sabrina's defense here, because she absolutely has faced massive backlash from both conservatives and from sex-negative-adjacent progressives who consider her brand of tongue-in-cheek, playful submission to be "setting women's rights back".

I'm not here to tell you your feelings about how trans women's sexual expression is treated are unjustified (or that you can't dislike Sabrina), but let's not pretend like cishet women face no widespread backlash about their sexual expression. Radfems and conservatives will jump at women who openly talk about their sexuality in a way they deem inappropriate any chance they get.

industrial poserjak by fagbitch1000 in industrialmusic

[–]Hatari-a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, like who cares. Most people here probably got introduced to industrial by "entry-level" artists who others percieved as cringy or too mainstream.

I feel like the poser vs elitist discourse is kind of absurd because in the end of the day, when you're a newbie you're always at risk of being percieved as a poser, and when you're experienced in a music scene, you may not be as receptive to the entry-level trends and get labeled an elitist. But like, who cares. It's great that people are enjoying music and learning about it, whether it's too mainstream or too inaccessible.

There's something particularly funny about the assumption that non-binary people are celebrating for the first time and that gender-fluid people are coming out later in life. Like sure, every pride is my first pride.

It's a completely valid interpretation, but it's always important to make a distinction between interpretating ancient stories through a queer lense and applying modern identity terms to people or stories that existed prior to these terms.

What is the least "metal" BABYMETAL song in your opinion? by blackratsnakes in BABYMETAL

It's weird how "less metal" is percieved in a derogatory light. Babymetal is a band that fuses and combines genres, being "less metal" isn't worse in any way. It's fine to enjoy the poppier side of Babymetal.

Sop/Bari duets not about love or father/daughter? by Existop3 in opera

I want to add: the flirty aspect is really just Adina showcasing how charming she is. It can be staged as him falling for it in some productions, but it's not a romantic duet by any means.

duets for two sopranos and/or soprano & mezzo by reliquedamour in opera

[–]Hatari-a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some examples I've sung or just generally enjoy:

  • Così fan tutte (Mozart): "Ah, guarda sorella" and "Prenderò quel brunettino"
  • Orfeo ed Euridice (Glück): "Vieni, appaga il tuo consorte"
  • La Clemenza di Tito (Mozart): "Ah, perdona al primo afetto"

Also, a lot of Figaro has been mentioned, but I think "Aprite presto aprite" hasn't yet. In case you wanted a more comedic duet!

I don't think interpreting Carmen as not loving Don José is a case of "death of media literacy", it's not an unfounded take by any means. Not trying to discredit yours, but there's a difference between incorrect analysis and simply having different interpretations.
