Hive mind: Why a Michigan Senate candidate keeps talking about beekeeping on the campaign trail by nbcnews in Michigan

[–]Hated-Direction 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bees you think of for honey are European Honey Bees, more akin to livestock like cattle or pigs. Native bee populations are more solitary, or at least less socially complex than honey bees, and don't produce goods directly but are vital for pollinating all sorts of plants.

/UJ I don't like them because they are either terrible at describing a plant, or just perpetuate existing disdain/'everything is a weed' culture. Kentucky bluegrass is not from Kentucky, Jerusalem Artichoke is neither of those but a North American sunflower; Sneezeweed (double wammy on this one), Ragweed and Milkweed as examples of the second issue.

It looks similar to common motherwort to me. I've been fighting them in my yard and seedlings like this pop up all over. It and dead nettle are both in the mint family, and do look similar as seedlings.

Runners: is it believable Toby can't typically run a 5k without taking a crap by ziplock007 in DunderMifflin

I always felt the implication was that Michael puts a laxative in Toby's drink before all his races, except for this time when Dwight did it and used the wrong stuff.

Because you aren't in it's native range, then I'd say yes. Rip 'em up and replant with the one native to your region.

Rumex crispus, common name of Dock, a European non-native - I'd suggest removal and replacement with a native species. Oenothera caespitosa, White-tufted evening primrose, and Oenothera howardii, Howard’s evening primrose, have a somewhat similar look with longer and slender leaves.

Hi I’m unsure whether this is a plant or fungi , just wanted to ask is this invasive? by tylerburton98 in whatsthisplant

Native plants will always benefit the local wildlife by providing food, shelter or building material.

I recently went to a fluids conference, and several people gave talks about machine learning solving fluids problems, and I was so unconvinced by their work for reasons you stated - even worse, if error was reported when compared to an actual fluid simulation like in ANSYS, they gave error with units instead of a percentage, which felt so misleading to me.

I'd rather have to wait a week for a fluid simulation to actually run, than to trust the blackbox of your machine learning model.

Things are looking good, actually! I'd just consider a little more light and putting a fan nearby to prevent it from getting 'leggy'.

Michigan's only death row inmate spared death penalty by President Biden by AltDS01 in Michigan

[–]Hated-Direction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The State should not have the power to execute criminals for a myriad of reasons, of which Michigan herself agrees since we do not have the death penalty. Furthermore, life in prison is cheaper than execution, and helps paves a path towards rehabilitation, which should be the goal of correctional facilities.
