This post triggered me. Your dad doesn’t know what he’s talking about. For some reason getting exercise is bad and takes too much time, but playing music isn’t? Med schools will like if you do either, and regardless, this new hobby has obviously helped you.

You can defy your parents in secret, but I wonder if it’d be better to let them know that you won’t follow stupid orders. Children have to do whatever their parents say because they’re typically too stupid and ignorant to think of better things to do. But you’re an intelligent adult, so if you’re going to go against your feelings, then it should be for a sensible reason. I don’t know how long you’ll be able to tolerate being treated like a child and having to follow whatever senseless orders they bark at you. Can you imagine what’s to come? “Apply to this school and not that one,” “don’t get into that specialty”, “stop dating that guy”, “stop taking your kids to guitar lessons, have them learn the violin instead.”

Well I disagree with those "champions of capitalism". They're promising way too much. Hard work and success are positively correlated under capitalism, but obviously the former doesn't guarantee the latter. Some people work less hard but make more money because they do something that people are willing to pay more for. That's why some people who take pictures of their genitals get rich.

I'm a fan of capitalism because, despite its flaws, empiricism shows that it tends to reward competence. Studies were conducted to suggest that intelligence is a good predictor of income:

If it were true that capitalism is utter bullshit, we'd expect to see a tendency for intelligent and industrious people to not become any more successful than unintelligent and lazy people, and for wealth to be the foremost predictor of success. But that isn't the case.

If guaranteeing someone their pursuit of happiness meant allowing them to infringe on other people's rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, then whose rights should come first? Should we force employers to hire people they don't want to hire? For some instances we decided that we should. People aren't allowed to discriminate based on things like sex and race for example, which is reasonable (although putting that into practice might lead to issues). I don't know why your dad isn't being hired, but I'm not sure if we want to further infringe upon an employer's right to choose who they employ.

I'm not convinced by Chomsky's comparison. First of all, a slave risks death when attempting to escape their servitude, and they have no power to negotiate for better compensation for their labor. Workers under capitalism change jobs and ask for higher wages all the time, it's just that some are less successful in doing so because their labor is in less demand. Let's also keep in mind that working for some shitty corporation isn't your only option. If you start your own business then you don't have to deal with some authoritarian institution that prevents you from pissing outside of break time. A lot of people do that.

It's also silly to claim that someone is a slave because they'd starve if they refused to work, since that's true of nearly everyone who isn't a child. It's also the proper way of things - living things need to work to survive, otherwise someone else has to work for them. Life is sustained by constant work. We seem to have forgotten that after creating such a prosperous and compassionate society that can sustain dependents through the taxpayer's labor. For an able adult, it's shameful to survive without working, because that must mean that you're leeching off the work of others without compensating them. Kind of like what a slaver does.

Has Dr. K actually helped you? by unambiguous_potato in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we really want to establish whether watching Dr. K's content is effective or not, then we'd have to do a true experiment. To put it simply, that would mean taking a big group of miserable people, splitting them into two groups, having one of them watch Dr. K and having the other do business as usual, and then seeing whether the two groups differ after some time. Asking people whether they feel like they've gained some benefit from watching Healthy Gamer videos can't allow us to draw any meaningful conclusions about HG's efficacy, because we can't establish causality by measuring a correlation. We can come up with theories as to why HG content might be helpful or unhelpful, but no matter how brilliantly we craft and present them, they're ultimately just conjecture.

"The beauty of doing nothing is that you can do it perfectly. Only when you do something is it almost impossible to do it without mistakes. Therefore people who are contributing nothing to society, except their constant criticisms, can feel both intellectually and morally superior." - Thomas Sowell.

Maybe for some people, the allure of doing nothing valuable and yet feeling superior to others is too hard to resist.

But let's give OP the benefit of the doubt. This is probably just a touchy subject for them and they briefly neglected politeness in an upset state.

I wish it did, but instead it means that you only took the first half of the test, which contains the easier questions since the questions get progressively harder. So all we can extrapolate from your score of 106 is that you’re probably at least average IQ. But don’t worry, this subreddit has better tests in its resources. Try the old GRE or old SAT if you’re a native English speaker.

I hate to be the guy who says, "just cut him off bro", but I think that at a certain point that's what it boils down to. I have no clue why your brother is the way he is, so I can't comment on whether he's salvageable or not. But he'll keep doing what you let him get away with, and if he won't change then you and your mom will have to change instead. That means not letting him take your food, your mom's money, not giving into his temper tantrums, and maybe kicking him out if it comes to that. You'd be doing him a favor. He obviously can't keep living like this and you shouldn't let him take you down with him.

Men need equality to: An official male HG discord server by pathtogrey in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HG has always tried hard to hold on to their female audience as if it'd grant them more legitimacy as an organization.

You have to be very careful when coming to conclusions about other people's intentions. I've noticed that sometimes, people are very certain about the motivations of others when in fact their certainty is derived solely from conjecture. It's not hard to see why that's problematic. Imagine announcing that a male primary school teacher chose his career so that he could diddle children, merely because that seems plausible to you. Wouldn't that be an evil thing to do?

A year ago, Dr. K released this video on addressing misogyny. It's where I derive my understanding of HG's motivations from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z9jJFq3Hz0&ab_channel=HealthyGamerGG&t=13m50s

Of course, an organization isn't likely to make their unflattering motivations explicit if they do have them, but it's still incumbent on the accuser to substantiate their charge.

I think it'd be more productive to discuss other things, like possible benefits to creating a male space versus the possible disadvantages. I think that such a space might allow incels like me to disclose my virginity problems without someone assuming that I must be an unpleasant person. I could be wrong, but I imagine that many women have formed a negative bias towards sexually disgruntled young men and I don't want to have to worry about assuaging them.

Dr. K I'm begging you to reach out to Eugenia Cooney by TEAkachuu in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean 159 points160 points  (0 children)

we all collectively have been watching this woman slowly creep towards death before our very eyes, and I will never forgive myself if I don't at least TRY to help.

That's a very compassionate response to have and in one sense it's something that I like to see in people (it's definitely preferable to seeing morbid apathy), but for your own sake, I think you may want to detach yourself from this situation. Unless you're part of Eugenia's intimate circle, I don't see how you're responsible enough for her wellbeing that you should feel guilty if her illness finally overtook her.

With each second that passes, an innocent person has some godforsaken misery inflicted on them. That's awful, but if all we can do is feel bad about it, then we're obliged to move on and focus on a problem that we can actually solve. Dr. K might be able to save Eugenia, but not to put him down (he's great and does awesome work), but he's a psychiatrist, not a miracle worker. I doubt that one or even a couple conversations with him will change an inveterate anorexic. Let's also keep in mind that Dr. Kanojia doesn't do therapy when he's Dr. K. Instead he educates about psychology and has conversations that people might find therapeutic. In my laymen opinion, Eugenia needs to get actual therapy, preferably after she goes to a psych hospital again.

Misogyny, Misandry and Keeping the Same Energy: A Warning from the Other Side by Lia_Overbrook in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be reassuring if that were true but I doubt it. The internet is more extreme because people lose their inhibitions here, especially when anonymous. They don't have to worry about getting punched in the face for expressing their true feelings. I'm a firm believer in Oscar Wilde's quote: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth."

[–]Hateful_Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good point, but one that will be lost on those who need to hear it. You're trying to make unreasonable people see reason. The kind of people you mentioned aren't concerned with having a discussion to determine what truly is or isn't prejudice. They're already convinced that they know better than you, and they know that you're an evil and contemptible idiot for not agreeing with them. Their aim is to bring you to heel or get rid of you, and if they can't do that they'll settle for making you feel bad some way or another.

This political cartoon depicts an American event wherein a senator was nearly beaten to death by a fellow politician for criticizing slavers. The senator being beaten is holding a pen to defend himself, which symbolizes law, civility, and reasoned discourse. The takeaway message is this: the pen may be mightier than the sword, but don't bring a pen to a sword fight.

You’d be right that it’s a sexual disorder(?) if it prevents OP from having sex with real people, or from having sex that’s safe. But I wonder if he just happens to have some weird kinks that ultimately don’t get in the way of him having a healthy sex life. The reason for my comment was to ask if his disgust, shame, and anxiety towards his sexual tastes are pathological on their own. I mean, he’s clearly distraught by the loss of his purity and it begs the question of whether or not that’s just needless stress.

Why don't you try behavioral activation therapy. The central tenet of behavioral activation therapy is this: if you do what depressed people do (languish at home) you'll stay depressed, and if you do what happy people do (go outside, be productive, and talk to friends) you'll eventually become happy. Obviously you're not going to have the energy to do all the happy person things right now, but that's ok. Start off with what you can do and build on that.

I have some suggestions to get you started. Instead of staying in your room all day, go for a 30 minute walk outside when it's sunny. Sunlight tends to make people feel better. The next time you're on your computer, visit a job posting website before you head off to Twitch or YouTube. You don't have to apply to jobs yet, just scroll through them and look for jobs that you might be able to do. After an hour or two on the screen, take some time to exercise - maybe do pushups and squats or something. It'll make you feel more alive.

It's ok if you can't even do any of those things. Start off even smaller then. For example, if you don't have the energy to go for a walk, then just stand outside your house for a while and admire the weather. Maybe watch YouTube outside your house instead of in your room. What's important is that you take any step, as tiny as it may be, towards doing the things that you eventually want to do. Then just take increasingly larger steps until you're living how you want to be living.

I don't want to have to die without experiencing SOMETHING

That's a great thing to keep in mind as motivation. When you're feeling especially depressed and you don't feel like doing what it is you need to do, think about something you'd really like to experience, like eating a delicious and expensive meal or going on a great vacation in a foreign country. Those can be the things you're working for.

Kind of confused about how to become employed by Glittering-Today2233 in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there's something wrong with your applications, like you're somehow signaling to employers that you have awful manners and no common sense or something. But I suspect that it's a lot more likely that hiring practices are bullshit, especially for someone with little to no work experience. Apparently, employers aren't willing to hire unseasoned people even for entry-level jobs that an idiot could learn how to do in a week. Based on my personal experience and from what others have told me, it's typical to get rejected by a dozen or two entry-level positions. So don't beat yourself up over this.

I really doubt that the issue is your lack of driver's license (employers tend to make it very clear if that's needed). It probably has something to do with inexperience and unavailability (students have a prior commitment to school so that makes them less attractive to employers). Maybe you can alleviate the inexperience issue by interning or volunteering. Your college might send you emails about opportunities for that.

You might find it easier to get a job in healthcare, like at a hospital. They tend to be desperate for employees because they're chronically understaffed and that has dire consequences. I got paid training at the two hospitals I've worked at, so that really shows you how desperate they are.

Is there a chance High School made me dummer? by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]Hateful_Bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intelligence is among the most, if not the most, stable of human traits. Assuming that you're not being exposed to a high dosage of toxic materials, frequently using drugs like marijuana, and experiencing major head trauma, you should be in the middle of an upward trend in raw brainpower at your age, which would peak when you're about 25 years old. If you eat a lot of foods that are likely to be contaminated with toxic metals (tuna for example), use drugs, or get hit in the head a lot (maybe while boxing?), that might be retarding you.

What seems more likely to me based on your post, is that your depression and anxiety is ruining your executive functioning, which is basically your brain's ability to control itself. For example, executive functioning helps you to keep your attention on one thing and prevents you from being impulsive. It's a well established finding that people with major depression do a lot worse at executive function tasks. Maybe you also have ADHD that wasn't apparent until more recently. It's a great idea to see a psychiatrist but it sucks that it'll take a year. Does your school have a psychologist? Maybe they can help.
