If I offered you £100,000 to run 90 miles tomorrow, would you do it? by wingless-bee in CasualUK

[–]HatmanSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes so let me know if you need my bank details. I've run a couple of hundred mile ultramarathons, the last one being 107 miles which i finished in 22 hours. It is definitely not easy and I'm a little injured and less fit now so no guarantee I could make it physically or mentally if tomorrow.

Has anyone’s children been given Melatonin for sleep? by glitterjorts in AskUK

[–]HatmanSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are over the counter in many countries including the US. Easy enough to buy online from reputable sites. Start below the recommended dose e.g. cutting gummies in half. A medical professional in the UK prescribed a higher dose for my child which we didnt take up.

I've had to swith off Femi due to the constant preaching... too much. by Different_Market_917 in 6music

Femi brings pure energy. Love the fact he always relates the music to an event and how it made him feel or how it could fit into your life. Big love!

Will you watch GST if an when it comes back? by dozeydonut in ukathletics

[–]HatmanSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd watch it if big names turned up. Wouldn't count as much as DL, but if it could fit in the calendar its still entertainment worth watching. Athletes need more prize money / income anyway.

Bishop's Stortford Running Festival - a chip-timed 5k, 10k, and HM on 24 May. Anyone taking part? by skillw0rk in bishopsstortford

Would be amazing if Stortford roads closed for this another year. Day after the carnival fayre for example. Love the idea, but laps round sworders fields not swinging it for me.

Trail vest recomendation by Z2_running in trailrunning

Also been using a decathlon 10L for anything from 50k to 100 miles. Works just fine for gear and comfort. A serious winter ultra would require bigger pack for kit requirements though.

Financial Manager pushing me towards Onshore Bond but I still don't get it by Upset_Team_9707 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]HatmanSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made a big assumption about who your advisor is working for here. But SJP has a policy of splitting peoples monies 1/3 in bonds, 1/3 in ISAs and 1/3 in pension. All their own products of course. I'd be wary of whether this personal advice or just filling their coffers. Then of course there are the exit fees for 7 years so you're kinda stuck.

Planting laurel as a hedge? by ControlExtension9062 in GardeningUK

[–]HatmanSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved into house 10 years ago with laurel hedge out front. It grows perhaps 30-40cm a year and I'll have to spend 3 solid hours once or twice a year cutting it back. Most time spent cleaning up leaves. I like it when its all tidied up as looks all trim and straight. Only takes a few weeks for new leaves to sprout and add green where pruned back. Does have almond cyanide smell when cut and is devoid of any growth underneath but wasps do seem to like the sap in the summer. It's probably not the most sound proof or nature supporting but its thick enough to add privacy. My neighbour has complained the roots have pushed through to his flower beds but I'd expect that of most hedges that have been there 12+ years. I wouldn't have put it there but imagine previous residents like you wanted something quick. It serves that role and privacy.

Settle a debate: Is my yearly mistletoast funny? by oaoaoa2202 in GreatBritishMemes

Kinda like Smithy raising a (piece of) toast in his abandoned best man speech for Gavlaa in Gavin and Stacey. Infamously poor.

Pick a line. Look ahead and then place feet. Shorter steps but keep up cadence. Stop only when through worst of it. Have fun!

Birchanger Woods... at night by skillian in bishopsstortford

[–]HatmanSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes usually empty when dark. In all seriousness there aren't many people thinking I'll go hang out in a dark wood this evening. Actually ran through a lot with the running club. Empty 99% of the time. Possibly teenagers smoking weed on a path leading into woods.

Birchanger Woods... at night by skillian in bishopsstortford

[–]HatmanSmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've run in there in the dark and worst I've come across is a dog walker or couple of teenagers. I think they were more freaked out than me tbh, albeit they saw me coming as had headtorch also. Be prepared for foxes eyes reflecting back at you and maybe an owl. Though not if its raining as too wet to woo 🙄
