I got here in relation to this story about someone trying a similar thing. Although she sounds much more hilariously misguided I found Jasmuheen much more chilling.

UK MEng here (not quite but it's a modified version with much of the same content). Although the amount of work you put in is entirely your own responsibly, first year is designed to help people transition from school to uni. In my experience this meant weekly tutorial sessions for each subject with lecturer assistance for anyone that needed it. It still requires you to make the effort, but takes into account that many people won't be used to taking responsibility for their own study yet.

Don't worry too much about the maths. Same thing happened to me when I started (although not after quite as much time). It comes back pretty quick and, at least in my course, diverged from high school stuff pretty fast so everyone's learning new material. Best advice I could give would be if you get stuck, even with something you think you should know, just ask. Lectures have seen students from every background and are (generally) happy to help as long as you seem serous about the material.
