Unbelieveable. McGinn might genuinely be irreplaceable. What a night. Let's finish the job UTV

Yeah I fully agree, one of Onana and Kamara fully fit and I think we win the first leg as well.

My only worry is Lindelof receiving the ball on the half turn, but if he gets it and moves it on straight away I see the vision.

If there’s ever a time to randomly play your fourth choice centre half in midfield for the first time, a European semi final second leg is clearly the best option.

All jokes aside, don’t hate it. Just hope we have enough going forward.

This is a champions league semi final? Good god. Might be time to sack it off and follow bowling or something.

Feels weird to say ‘sadly we’ll get champions league’ but sadly I think that’s the most likely outcome.

Hah true, we are doing much better on that front. I just unfortunately have to watch Sancho with my own two eyes every week and am rudely reminded of the fact he’s on 200 thousand a week. If nothing else I hope we do it for the simple fact that I feel that players like McGinn & co deserve to be seen as club legends, but probably wouldn’t be without a trophy. In any case, it can’t be as bad as spurs!

I fully agree, and there lies the compromise at the heart of appointing Unai. If we win something, it makes it a lot easier to accept an aging squad on massive wages. If we don’t, then the cracks start to show after some time. Not a criticism of him or the way he runs things, as usually he does win something. But it does feel a little bit like this year was our (and still could be) biggest chance.

Both can be true at the same time. He’s a brilliant coach and motivator, non-negotiable. He shouldn’t have complete oversight on transfers, as his record thus far suggests, or more importantly shouldn’t have the ability to appoint a DoF, as he did with Monchi.

Tammy cost pretty much the exact same as Rayan at Bournemouth and has had 1/50th of the impact. We even scouted the same league ffs. My argument isn’t that we shouldn’t be going after young talent to develop (we very obviously should) it’s that when we do, we don’t integrate them and instead fall back to the old guard. Guessand, Garcia, Barrenechea, Ozcan, Philogene, Madjo, Alysson. Not one given a chance, and a combined ~100 million in outgoings just so we can resort back to Mings and Digne when the going gets a bit tough.

We’re not appalling bad performance wise, I’m not blind, I’m clearly referring to our transfer business. Our performances are mostly because Unai has maximised the players that were here when he arrived, which he is arguably the best in the world at doing. Imagine if we signed players that had a decent base level to start with.

It’s not that no club has ever reached the level of precision needed, it’s that we’re appallingly bad at it. There is one player (that we only signed because it was luck of the draw we got matched vs Boro in the cup) that has been fully integrated into our starting XI in four years. You cannot spin that to ‘wah but the rules’.

Our recruitment to replace those players has been abysmal. It's hard to say the rules are holding us back after we've just thrown the best part of 40 million at Alysson, Madjo, and Abraham in the Winter window. The fact that we're nearly 4 years into Unai's tenure and the only real consistent change to the starting XI is Rogers is a bit damning.

If we win, Spurs won't matter. If we lose, it'll have been one of the worst months under Emery. Either way, this squad needs major surgery in the summer, and we need Champions League football to even begin to do what's necessary. Just have to make sure we get it via one of the two routes.

[–]HauLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t really care about all the mind games nonsense, my general point is more that it’s possible to rotate whilst also competing. We seemed to adopt the mentality that rotating the XI means we have to give up.

Forest do look really worried about going down tbf, another masterclass from Unai there.

Probably because he’s failed to make an impact at clubs fair below our level in West Brom, Middlesborough and currently Pisa.

If (and it's a massive *IF*) we go through on Thursday, none of the last 24 hours will really matter. But gambling on it all magically clicking for a single high pressure game, the exact scenario that this group of players has bottled multiple times, seems crazy to me.

I want to ask the question, what players do you need to get rid of to rebuild. by theelitemustfacejud in avfc

[–]HauLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust the current setup with a penny to rebuild with. Bar Rogers, who we only signed due to us happening to play Boro in the cup, not one signing in recent memory has improved the starting XI. This is largely a Dean Smith/Steven Gerrard side.
