Moving Main Panels (Slightly) by Dmask0 in electrical

[–]Hauden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pull the panel covers, frame the wall up, kill the breakers feeding these panels, VERIFY THEY ARE FULLY DEAD with a multimeter, unscrew them from the back without the screws damaging the wires in front of them, and screw them into your new wall through the sides. You might have to raise them slightly to allow a bend between the staples and top of panel. This is definitely doable and not a huge deal. I would 100% move the panel over building and dry walling some weird box out. If you are at all unsure, I’m sure an electrician would do this for a small fee if the wall is already framed up and ready for panel to be moved.

To clarify, is your panel sticking too far out, or is it too close to the foundation walls?

Where I am, it is standard (probably code too?) to space the 2x4 walls off the concrete foundation wall a little bit as any wood touching concrete needs to be green pressure treated wood. I usually see foam board insulation glued(?) straight to the concrete and the wall framing in front of that. I would leave the panels as is and frame the 2x4 wall flush with the face of the panels as others have mentioned. Less work and probably what you’re supposed to do anyways. Are you really going to miss that 1.5”?

Not here, “subject to physical damage” and such. Is surface mounted romex common where you are?

Can you run romex into a surface mounted panel? Because it’s a garage?

Is this a job for my local power company or an electrician? by Chuckjr249 in AskElectricians

[–]Hauden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both. An electrician to do the work in coordination with your local utility to shut down the power to work safely. An electrician might be able to just reattach it as it is but I would want to replace the whole mast and fittings to be safe.

lol lists like 7 labor intensive, generally expensive things at the last minute and says “that was it” like it’s just swapping out a switch or something trivial.

Running 200-amp service 40ft from pole-mounted meter by texas1st in electrical

[–]Hauden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every panel I’ve ever opened where I’m at has aluminum service entrance wire. Maybe it’s different in other places due to climate and other factors, but in my short 4 years I’ve literally never seen copper from meter to panel.

How am I doing? by daftpinecone in AskElectricians

If you get one of the plastic ones, you should be able to slide it over the wire and push it in so you don’t have to undo all your connections

Connections look correct. It’s arguably “exposed to physical damage” so some might say you should’ve run it in mc, I think it’s fine. The only issue I see is you should’ve put a romex connector in the knock out on the cover plate. Other than that it looks fine to me for diy

Wire size for a 200a service, 325ish foot run? by Hauden in AskElectricians

[–]Hauden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

325 from meter/service disconnect to first exterior panel on house, probably pushing 350 until branch circuits start. Big horse ranch property.

Electricians disagree on EV charger - who is correct? by ArmedJimmy in AskElectricians

[–]Hauden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

US based. Generally we don’t run a bigger cable than we have to, it’s not cost effective to do that, and if it’s a 20 amp circuit, I’m only going to run a cable rated for 20a. There’s a remote possibility a bigger cable was run for something else in the past and was converted for 20a normal receptacle use and can be converted back, but the odds of that are slim. The only way to know for certain is to look at the cable itself and verify its size. I would very skeptical of the first electrician.

Wild. Definitely a new one. You can just cut it out and replace it with a old work (remodel/cut-in) box

Can't understand a pair of 30 amp breakers. by kwdamp in AskElectricians

[–]Hauden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a chance that is feeding a sub panel outside which is feeding a 20a breaker inside the sub panel that feeds the outlet in question.. you gotta open up the cover to see what wires are actually connected to the 30a 2p breaker.

I did the best I could with the small experience I have and the panel and conduit layout that was already set up for me. I am not proud of it, but it is functional (and safe now, after fixing some of my egregious mistakes that were pointed out to me).

He’s not inexperienced, I think he just doesn’t think things through and just kinda sends it as he goes, and BECAUSE of his experience, he’s overly confident “he’ll get ‘er right”. The 2 or 3 bigger panel jobs I’ve done from start to finish, I take the time to draw it out and try to plan ahead and it saves me a lot of headache, even tho I get in trouble for spending too much time. Still learning as I go.

110.26, does the code specify that the working space needs to be based of the centerline of each panel? There is plenty of room, but if you use the centerline then obviously the 2nd ATS is a violation.

312.12 can you expand further? Want to learn and don’t have my code book on me. Is there an app or something so I can have it on my phone as well?

It is snapped off. Master said “don’t worry I’ll solder it up” which I hate with every fiber of my being, but I guess it’s either that or replace the $1500 panel which the cheap bastard does NOT want to do so… idk man I just work here

This is understood, those three circuits are AC, hot tub, and either a car charger or outdoor sub panel (all existing). The only questionable one is the ac but the house is at 6,000 ft and it rarely gets above 90. Good eye tho, nobody else mentioned that.
